[ - ] I’ve been letting my 4 yo DD make messes with food, toys, paint etc, thinking this is great for her creativity and curiosity. But lately DH has been complaining a lot about it and looks like it even depressed him, that DD does what she wants and our home is chaotic. I also lost a housekeeper I was working with a few monthes ago. My DD doesn’t really listen to us (listens to DH much better than me) and has a very strong personality but is very social, outgoing and very popular among kids. However what she does at home is costing our sanity and DH even thinking relocation to near his family so we have help. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] S/O on 52K tuition vs. 12K for St Ignatius. At CSH you pay for small class size, ratio 7 to 1 teacher through all grades, individualized help and tons of support, of course the bells and whistles, excellent after school activities, summer camps on site, their incredible athletic facility, with pool, swimming lessons in K, gourmet farm to table food for lunch, and a warm community. Good exmissions, and great support with the model of nurturing girls specifically. On the other hand, yes 12K is cheap. But the Principal is strict and set in her ways. And the class size is 30 kids with one teacher starting in First grade through 12. Its hard to compare only price, you have to compare where you think your DD will really thrive. Just my 2 cents. Also many of the girls go to Loyola for HS or Dominican. There is a specific test that Catholic school kids take in addition to the normal tests and you are not positive your DD will be accepted when she is 12, and has to go on an interview -- there will be more competition since D3 is suffering. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I went to stuy HLS and have a law degree from Germany so would have good credentials. I love explaining math to my kids and would like to build up a business starting with charging $50 to eventually act tutor rates (150). I am 55 so imagine this will be a huge turnoff to kids and parents. Aside from learning act math what’s could I do to get a few students to try it out? Would anyone hire me? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

He was in a bad mood and snapped for no reason, a few hrs before leaving for the airport. He left without even saying goodbye, not even a text to tell me he landed. Heard from him via email only Saturday, he simply asked if a package he was expecting ad been delivered. I said I had no idea, I was in bed with some light flu symptoms. He replied "sorry" and then went on to boast about how well he was playing and how great the weather had been etc. - Have not heard from him since. Not even a text to ask how I was doing... we also had a pretty bad snow storm here in the midwest and ds and I were stuck at home for 48hrs, he knows. He's coming back tonight, I really don't know what to expect. I am so hurt thinking he could not even send a quick note, especially after how he left last week. I really don't think I can welcome him as if all is Ok, but I also know I should just probably keep my cool... definitely cannot bring up how this behavior hurt me. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yep, it was very far, 7 hour drive, and very different from other colleges he applied to which were mostly a mix of SUNY/CUNY and a few well-known, large privates closer to home. This one was a small LAC. I, personally, fell in love with it and felt that DS would have done very well there. They also gave him merit aid that brought the cost down to be about 10K more per year than SUNY (we don't get need-based), so it was 34K vs. 24K. DS chose the SUNY school he dreamt about. He is having a great time there, but classes are large, getting into a class he wants is an impossible struggle and maintaining a high GPA is a LOT harder than we envisioned. I am stirring my daughter away from big state flagships and into either small state or smaller LAC's that give good merit. [ Reply | More ]

We toured all the colleges that were reasonably close by that he might apply to. Ds nixed a few which cut down the application list. We will visit others if/when he gets in. Btw, if applying local, make sure you do this with your safeties. Apparently, lots of kids at his school get rejected from Fordham even with the right stats because they don't take the time to visit so the school assumes they are a safety and not really interested. You can usually make an appointment on the school's website. [ Reply | More ]

My dd looked at colleges the summer between junior and senior year. She interviewed at all the schools we visited and, yes, she made appointments for the tours and for campus interviews. She applied ED to her top choice, but had applications ready that included a few schools in the midwest we weren't able to visit. (We're in NYC and were low-income.) Top colleges don't care if you interview (they might not even offer interviews on campus), but those a step down from the top ten or so do care about applicants showing interest. It's a good idea to start by visiting a school the the student is more likely to get into, but that has something that will appeal to the student. You want your child to be able to see themselves at a match or safety school, instead of only seeing herself at, say, Stanford. In our case, Connecticut College was the first school we visited. Dc should absolutely tour any school s/he is interested in that is not a financial hardship for him/her to visit. Schools LOVE when a student shows real interest by visiting, and DC can refer to the visit on the application. DC (and you) should sign up on the school's websites for a tour and make sure you check in when you get there so the school knows that you visited. They track info like that. [ Reply | More ]

Either live in the northern suburbs - wilmette, winnetka, kennilworth that feed into New Trier. Or live in the city. You can live Gold Coast, River North and parts of Lincoln Park and they will feel more "city" with no need to drive. Or live Lincoln Park, Bucktown or Southport area where you can be in a house in a walkable area. We moved to Lakeview ( Southport) in Chicago from NY and love living in a house in the city for a fraction of the price of a small apartment in NYC. Call Latin and Parker because applications are closed but they are flexible with transfers. Do not let people talk you into the British school. FWIW we did Sacred Heart ( sister school to the one in NYC. SS with a boys schools in the same building) and love it. [ Reply | More ]

You will have an unproductive cycle between cycles because by the time you get your period, it is too late to start a new cycle. So you can start again on your next period, but the month in between won't work. I had IVF cycles (one with transfer, one freeze all) and three transfers between end of Dec 2017 and end of June 2018, just for context. If you have an IVF cycle and doctor decides to freeze all, you can probably do a transfer on the next period, without losing that month in between. [ Reply | More ]
