Sometimes I guess, but I am pretty good in enjoying the minutiae. I like talking with my kids over dinner. I like drowsy, sunny naps on the beach. Sometimes it just feels good to get a closet cleaned out, or take me elderly neighbor to the pharmacy. My job is making important differences in the lives of families in need (which doesn't mean I don't have my share of boring office minutiae). [ Reply | More ]

I'm not "TT" and yes, the economy has improved tremendously from how it was in 09-11. This is what the official numbers say aND it is very much what I see around me. At the turn of the decade I know lots of unemployed and underemployed people who were fairly desperate. Now I know very few and those I know are right out of college or coming out of SAHM. Always higher un/underemployment. I don't know anyone forced into prostitution by the economy. But, I didn't in 09 either. The people I know of who are forced into that are either teen runaways or addicted to drugs. Or both. [ Reply | More ]

I used to work with sex workers as a counselor through the courts. A lot of them turn to it, not so much to make ends meet, but because they can make relatively good money in it. I do. Yeah, it's kind of a scam. My dentist wanted $650 for one. Forget that! I bought one online from a dental lab for about $100. They send epoxy clay and a dental tray out and you make impressions of your teeth, send it in and then they send the night guard out. Because it's custom made, it fits perfectly and is really comfortable (do not get one on the bottom teeth--I did that at first, but it drove me crazy with my tongue touching it at the front teeth). Why do I think it's a scam? Because there is not a single bite mark on it after 2 years of nightly wear. So, tell me how much teeth grinding do I really do? Buy one online for $100. It will piss your dentist off no end because that's where their profit is, but the end result is the same. [ Reply | More ]

I have to look through my papers. I bought it 2 years ago. Google it. There are all kinds of labs that do this online. There is absolutely NO reason it should cost $700. My dentist was PISSED! She also told me that a chip on a tooth was due to teeth grinding. Um, no. I hit my head on a diving board when I was 10. I vividly recall chipping that tooth at that time. She had the audacity to argue with me about that. I now have a new dentist. Beware. Dentists are hustlers. They need suckers to pay their overhead. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, it's a money maker for dentists. I guess I am confrontational, because I was willing to get into the mud with my former dentist over this. And I was right. I do not grind my teeth (or at least I haven't in the 2 years I have been wearing that thing each and every night). It's comfortable, so I just put it in, but if it were the slightest bit uncomfortable, I wouldn't bother. Time to reevaluate your relationship with your dentist. First it's an unnecessary appliance and then it's an unnecessary crown or root canal. Ugh. [ Reply | More ]

It's nuts. In my day, 3rd grade was "New Math" or "Set Theory" or something like that. My parents didn't have a clue what that was all about, but I figured it out on my own. Later on, my of childhood involved sitting at the kitchen table after dinner with my scientist father as he helped me with math problems--especially word problems involving pools draining or trains traveling in different directions. When my parents died, I inherited that kitchen table. There are all sorts of equations engraved into it in my father's handwriting (oops!). In some ways, making the big bucks as a wife can suck. You don't feel taken care of, you have a lot of power to override DH and nobody appreciates you! [ Reply | More ]

I make a smoothie w/ yogurt, splash of pear juice, walnuts, spinach, avocado and apple, I add other things too -- not a fixed recipe just heavy on vegetables and always 1/2 an avocado [ Reply | More ]

arugula, celery, cucumber, pepitas, chia seeds are also good, you need fat (avocado, nuts) and protein (nuts) for good balance [ Reply | More ]

Depends on what you are making with them. My favorite is to use farro as the rice in a risotto style dish. Add whatever vegetables you like and it's a great little meal. But you can also cook them like oatmeal-style, just in boiling water. My mom makes a fried rice-type thing with amaranth that is heavenly. [ Reply | More ]
