[ - ] I'm a medical student and I just want to vent about this anonymously: I hate elder care. I think it was better 100 years ago when people dropped dead at 75 without ever knowing they were sick. Nowadays, people linger until their 90s with the knowledge that every day could be their last. It's terrible. I think medicine has done more harm than good in this area. 35 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I read something about this recently from a doctor who said he/she felt that patients were being manipulated into believing that the proper way to show love is to prolong your parent's life for as long as possible, even if that means that a 90-year-old is hospitalized for months with tubes coming in and out of them and aggressively resuscitated so they don't, God forbid, die of a heart attack at the age of 90. It just seems like an awful way to finish your life. [ Reply | More ]

Disagree. It was better for SOME people. I have seen it both ways. Doctors see a person who is their early 70s who gets very ill and have no idea how healthy and active they were and tend to either overprescribe or under prescribe, which even causes more problems. BTDT. If it is your parent, you need to be there to manage any illness because any turn can be dismissed as "he's old, just let him die" even if he could recover and have good years left. op. It is a slippery slope, though. First it's a heart attack...doctor caths you because you probably have "a few good years left." Then it's something else...and on and on. In the end, you are 90, decrepit, incapacitated, and basically waiting for death. You would have been better off dropping dead of that heart attack at age 78 or whatever. [ Reply | More ]

May I suggest that your perspective may change over time. Seventy eight looks a lot older to you now than it will some day. And there is a broad range of functional levels at any age. It's too individual to just write everybody off at a certain age. However, I agree that it's awful to see people with no prospect for any quality of life who continue to get every treatment possible to the point of medical torture. [ Reply | More ]

That is their attitude but the choices aren't always true. The choice can be treatment to return to their previous active state, or letting them die. But they are told "you will always be in pain and suffer" and over or under medicate them so they stop eating and get weaker and it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Unless you are rich and powerful. Look at George Bush Sr. and recall how many times he was hospitalized. But everyone remembered him as the healthy President and treated him as such instead of saw him as the very sick, old and decrepit man brought in via ambulance who is heavily medicated. You don't realize how nearly ALL patients look when they are first brought into hospital very sick and medicated. The difference is that if a patient is young, he or she is treated with the expectation he will recover and return to his previous health. If a patient is older - say 70 -- they might as well be 90 sometimes. it's just some "old" person and when you see him sickly and medicated you assume that's how he is all the time. Those perceptions make a difference in treatment and expectations. I have seen it. [ Reply | More ]

I did this last summer. They will love it. Go to Positano but it is really hard to get good accommodations right now. Find hotels you like and ask them to call you if they have cancelations. Naples is in-between as is Pompeii. Rome is very hot and crowded in June/July so you're better off spending fewer days there and more at the beach. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I think if you're opposed to abortion because it's an innocent human life, then you should not be ok with any exceptions. Not rape, not threats to the mother's life. Otherwise you're a hypocrite, because you're totally ok with "killing that innocent baby" for someone else's crimes, or for reasons that are no fault of their own. Just own that this is what you want. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I agree. I've never understood the "in cases of rape" argument. You either think it's the murder of a baby or you don't. I'm in the latter category. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] The nanny post has me thinking: We have someone who helps out one day per week with errands, cooking, laundry, etc. She is not a nanny (our DC is in MS). We pay $25 hour and pay her for 8 hours per week ($200) even though she often is done with the to-do list after 6-7 hours. How much Christmas bonus should I give her? She is paid off the books and gets one sick day and one vacation day per year (i.e., two weeks since she only comes once per week, with pay). 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
