If you were retired with $7 MM in assets, you would be told by a financial planner to take no more than 4% of your assets for spending each year. That's 280K/yr for you. Unless you expect to start having lots of income in the near future, you'd be told on UB that you do not have enough income to cover one kid in private, much less multiple ones. [ Reply | More ]

What about if one has $1M in assets, is 4% of assets still what the financial planners say? [ Reply | More ]

4% is the max, and generally advised for people close to retirement. Gets very risky if you are talking about people 40 doing this. [ Reply | More ]

I am the other poster in the thread in similar situation as OP and we work off of 3 percent. Being a retiree with grown children is very different for a financial forecast than being 40 with young ones. We do 3 now and would do 4 in 20 years. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 02.14.16, 02:26 AM Flag

But that assumes you want to still have $7 MM forever. If they're willing to spend down some capital, they could pull off more than 4%. The kids might be better off with the primo education now rather than PS 6 and a bigger pot of money in 40 years. [ Reply | More ]

it depends on the extent to which you think private is better than public AND your personal emphasis on education. I fell into my first kind of "career" and liked it generally but decided I wanted to do something different. I went to graduate school at 35 for a very specific career and when I got out realized that the day to day work of this career did not fit my preferred work style. I spent about 6 months wondering what the hell I had done with my life (I had to quit my original job more or less to do the full time graduate school and required internships/field work). I had a brainstorm that I could work in the type of job I did before but on the subject matter of the grad degree and have been so happy ever since. [ Reply | More ]

Explore what people who share her passions or skills might do for living, and discuss what it might be like, what her life might look like. Help her to nurture all her interests, and ensure that she has time to explore them while getting a basic liberal arts undergrad education... I think it is important for most people, at least those who want seem kind of profession career or calling, to have a basic college education to provide a strong academic foundation before settling on a profession. I fell in love with my career in high school and am lucky enough to work in it. My son has no idea though. I say, what do you like? what kind of life do you want to have? money is important in that you don't want to sweat the rent, but is not good enough reason to pick a job you don't care about. Do you like working with other people, or prefer more autonomy? What subjects in school interest you? Do you find yourself drawn to newspaper stories about any particular subject? Do you want to work with your hands, is it important to 'make a difference'? What are you passionate about? Take video games = is it the story aspect, the art, the programming, the marketing? Think about the workplace and hours required. If you're medical type, may work odd hours and shifts. Authors have to be self motivated and work in isolation. Would you miss an office environment? Do you want to go to the same place and do the same type of work every day, or would you be ok in a job where you traveled last minute and worked on a lot of different things? Mostly though, it's how do you envision spending your life? Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

The time for that is during the sentencing process. If your contrition convinces the judiciary to go easy on you, so be it. If not, a truly contrite person would simply accept the penalty. Or even do the state's work for it, and commit suicide. At least, this is how it seems to me. If I were guilty of a horrendous murder, I would certainly take my own life as an act of contrition if at all possible. [ Reply | More ]

You're thinking of Kevyn Aucoin. The kind that has the tubes that wrap around your eyelashes. It's expensive. Before resorting to that, let's diagnose why your mascara is smearing around your eyes. Do you wear waterproof mascara? If not, do so. Do you wear mascara on your lower lashes? If so, don't. Do you wear rich eye cream under your eyes? If so, use less or use a less rich cream. Do you touch your eyes? If so, stop. If you are doing everything right already and it still smudges, then resort to $$$$ mascara. [ Reply | More ]

We keep ours as 66 in the winter. We put on another layer of clothes if we're cold. Now, in the summer we blast the AC like we live in Hell, but that's because of me. I can't do hot. My body can't regulate heat like it can cold. No idea why. I've always been this way. [ Reply | More ]

Yes and yes. My DH is the one walking around in a tee shirt that I have vented about and cranks up the heat and then tells ME how cold it is outside. WTF do I care? It is too hot in HERE for me in my tee shirt. We don't have a thermostat, so it is on and off with the fan unit all day. Meaning, he puts them all ON and 3 minutes later, I turn them all OFF. Hate winter in the city. [ Reply | More ]

Just a little bit--within 2 to 3 degrees. I can tolerate big swings in temperature, but DH is less tolerant. I live in Florida. I like it warm. In the summer, I set the A/C at 80 when we're home. DH likes it at 78. I usually win. In winter, like now, I can take it down to 66. DH is running around with a big sweater and thick pants on when it's 70 inside. At 68 he has a down jacket and wool hat on. Haha. We have an electric mattress pad and blanket on our bed. Still, DH is freaking out if it's below 68 in the bedroom. Whatever. [ Reply | More ]

I might not say I am sorry - you never know. This could be her choice, he could beat the crap out of her, she could be having an affair etc. etc. etc. I might send a note saying "Bob told us that you were separating.
