honestly yes. I was surprised too. A little bit of guidance and organization are making a big difference. First i resisted thinking that i didn't want to pay someone to "do the work for him" but his tutor focuses on what type of voice he wants to have and helps him organize his ideas. It was been great. [ - ] How do I stop letting my parents' "hurt feelings" affect me? They send rude e-mails and text messages because they are annoyed I'm going out of town for Passover (we invited them). Same thing happened for Rosh Hashanah last year. They never cared about these holidays until I got married and my DH's family cared. For the record, DH's family is not that fond of my parents (for good reason) but always make the gesture of inviting them when we celebrate in NY. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If your parents are like mine, they see invitations from DH's parents as passive aggressive. They clearly could not possibly just be nice, and they want to get my parents over there on their home turf so they can have the advantage and show off how everyone's at their home instead of your parents home. It's exhausting. [ Reply | More ]

Top two schools in the country are Trinity and Horace Mann. Trinity will likely be honest and tell you that your DD is too young (they like waiting) however Horace Mann sticks to a Sept 1 cut-off so not only is she not too young to go there, if you waited a year, HM would only consider her for 1st grade. My point, every school is different. If you call each school during the less busy times of the year, you can get straight answers. But we saw summer girls get into almost every top school including HM, Brearley, Spence and Chapin...plus a bunch of the catholic schools that some people like. I think Dalotn and Trinity are the two that like to red shirt the most. [ Reply | More ]

i shouldn't have said Dalton won't take, what i meant is, you should really consider the fact taht many kids are a year older there. I wouldn't want my normal-aged summer child to start kindergarten at normal time just to have a bunch of hold-backs in the class. I know they'll accept some summer kids, but your summer kids would then be by far the youngest and likely smallest of the kids which is just weird to me. [ Reply | More ]

My ds told his bff how great the tutor is and now the mom, whom I don't know well has emailed me asking for the contact info of the tutor to see if he has any free days for her son. I don't want to be a tutor hog, but for several reasons, I don't want to share this info. I also know that the tutor only has one free day and it his one day off from tutproing. It's the tutor's business to get referrals. I know what you are thinking, ds's bff is potentially his competition in college admissions if they are same grade and school - but it's not statistically likely that they will be in competition for exactly the same good colleges. There are enough of them to go around. Share the tutor's number. [ Reply | More ]

op: same grade, same school, same gender and same race (diverse). definitely competition for some of the same colleges. the other kid seems to be a slightly better student than my ds, at least in math. also, i would nver just give the tutor's number out )or a sitter), I'd call the tutor first to check and see if its ok for me to give out the number. This is a very touchy subject. On the one hand, you want to help another parent out, but if the other kid doesn't do well, guess whose fault it will be? And refusing to share the information makes you look selfish. I also know people who referred the tutor, and the tutor was offered more money by the new people and suddenly became unavailable. Consider a white lie: you asked your tutor, who told you that he is not accepting any more new clients and he asked you not to give out his number. [ Reply | More ]

Propofol is sometimes called the "milk of amnesia," because of its milky color. You will be asleep, but since it titrates very quickly, you will wake up feeling rested, and not dopey as you would with an opiate. Perfectly safe in the right hands, which does not include the guy who gave it to Michael Jackson. [ Reply | More ]

OR. Anaesthesia makes me tearful and totally constipated - can't pee or poop. The pain is awful with a colonoscopy if you're awake, but I'd choose it over anaesthetic. It's less unpleasant than an endoscopy, which I was also awake for, but it takes a lot longer. [ Reply | More ]

You guys are funny. "I demand that I have my procedure in a hospital." I presume "in case something goes wrong?" What is going to go wrong during a colonoscopy that can ONLY be treated in a hospital? Nothing, unless you're worried that you might need emergency dialysis during your colonoscopy? You think that there's some magic drug or machine they have at the hospital that they don't have at the surgi-center? There isn't. If you have a problem at the surgi-center they're going to do the exact same thing they do for you in the hospital, with the same equipment and the same people operating it. [ Reply | More ]

None of those things seem like total dealbreakers to me. One guy rejected you - certainly his prerogative. One guy wants a serious relationship - probably because he thinks you're cooler than he thought and wants to be more serious. That sounds like a promising development. One guy didn't walk you to a taxi? Are you a damsel in distress? It sounds like you're looking for a guy who treats you really well, but doesn't bother you, but is always around, and who won't want to have sex with you right away. [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't have to be so hard. But you do need to manage your expectations, just like everything. Expect to date 100 men to find 1 you think worthwhile... So act accordingly - make dates not a big deal, don't invest your heart on a profile or "just better than OK" first date, ruthlessly prune the list, drop the guys who don't feel truly special at first meeting, and trust your gut. And ENJOY the crazy experiences.... [ Reply | More ]

When I look back on those years, I wish I was more carefree and just enjoyed the experience even if deep down, I knew the guy was totally Mr. Wrong or only Mr. (Right Now). I don't consider tutors wrong and it doesn't seem to be a secret at our tt. for some it is becaue the kid is struggling in a subject, for others it is because the kid/parents want them to lead the pack, for others it is just a homework helper, which is howit started for us. both dh and wohm and are not home during the crucial homework time of 4-7 (dh gets home at 6:30, I get home at 7), so having a college student come and get the kids organized and on task has been great. [ - ] WOHMs, be honest how long is your average work day and how much of it is work and not schmoozing/face time/paying bills/UB. How much do you make and what is your field? 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You're going to get a skewed answer right now because the only WOHMs who are on UB right now are those who have the time to be. [ Reply | More ]

Attorney here. Salary: $ 105K working in house, hours are 9 to 5:30 pm. I am in court 2 to 3x/week. I am able to surf UB/internet on office days when I am working on briefs or reports (like I am doing now). Otherwise, no one at my firm cares as long as I make my required billable hours every week and win my trials in court. I rarely work weekends, but sometimes have brought my work laptop home to fire off emails if I fall behind. [ Reply | More ]

Corporate counterintelligence analyst. I work eight hours most days, and check UB on my lunch (west coast). I do read a lot of news sites, but at least 90 percent is related to my job. 110K a year. [ Reply | More ]

What are you trying to prove or demonstrate? Most of us in the corporate world have some downtime, other times we don't even have time to go to the ladies' room. Sure, what I do is not saving the world, but it helps to keep a roof over my family's head, save for future, and provides health insurance. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a partner in a boutique law firm and am availble to my clients, partners and associates 24/7. During the average work day I have an hour or so to pay bills, internet surf. I consider schmoozing and face time as part of my job. I am in the office m-f from about 9:30-7 and occasional weekends for a few hours. I make $400-950 in any given year. [ Reply | More ]

I WOH p/t and I'm home today (on UB). Because I'm part time, I honestly spend about 7-7.5 of my 8 hour day working. But I agree with your point, OP - I find the days I'm at work to be less stressful, more flexible, and with more down time than when I'm home with my 2 year old. BUT let's remember ladies - it's not a competition. It's hard to be a WOHM and a SAHM in very different ways. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] We moved into a much nicer and larger apartment 2 weeks ago. My 2.5 year is still saying "I want to go home" Is this normal? He is not very verbal and also randomly said "no one wants to play with us here." I knew the move would be hard on the nanny because she is now 20 blocks away from where she had make a lot of friends. I wonder if she is telling him that or he is saying on his own. He is not especially verbal. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

is she surprised to hear it? or does she seem to agree? either way, you'll never know where he is getting it. but you can tell her to try to emphasize how fun the new apartment is when he says it to her, and you do the same. in another week, he won't even remember the old place. [ Reply | More ]

Before we moved just now (we downsized) I was worried about how my older dc would react, so I let him pick out a plant for his new room. He picked out one for himself and one for his sister. I had him carry it into his room the day we moved in. We are also going to get a goldfish or two to make the new place special for the kids. They didn't have pets in our old place. [ Reply | More ]

The funny thing is, my dd is the one who is having a hard time. She's not yet 2, and I thought she'd be the easy one. My son's only complaint is the radiator noise. It's scary to him. Good luck. They are creatures of habit. Sometimes change is hard, but after awhile, they are fine. [ Reply | More ]

We are now in our our 5th house since having older dd (who turned 3,in January). There is always some type of adjustment but we have been in the most recent 'forever" house since nov and she is completely used to it (And she is definitely not a laid back kid). yes its weird. Married 5 years now and am still FB friends with 3 ex boyfriends, and recently de-friended one because realized he wasnt much of a friend post-break up anyway (would make semi-snarky comments on some of my posts/pics). The other 2 were mostly physical relationships and now I keep them to remind me how much hotter my DH is than they are, lol. [ Reply | More ]
