[ - ] How do you (what is your strategy/system) for using credit cards points for travel? I'm thinking of switching our cash back amex to platinum and our chase visa to sapphire preferred for the things that need to be on visa, but I can't figure out how the two might work together. 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Why do you need both cards? Thats twice the fees. Platinum amex is like $195/year and Chase Sapphire is $95/year. [ Reply | More ]

That's what I'm trying to figure out. We've always used AMEX with cash back as primary, and had a visa with no benefits and no annual fee for times when amex is not accepted. Now we want to try to figure out the way to convert this all to get travel benefits. I know there are other perks for amex platinum so that was going to be the default, but what to do for the 10K or so we spent on visa in a year. I was thinking about maybe doing the nordstrom visa card for that to get the benefits there, but then started to think that will just encourage us to spend on things when experiences make us happier! I got the chase sapphire preferred when they were doing 100000k sign up bonus. I also have the Citi 2% cash back, and much prefer the chase. The points are great. I essentially only use this card now. You book travel through their system (which isn't the best, but it's fine if you're doing pretty standard travel). If you want to do Asia or very expensive trips, it's worth it to google how to convert the chase points to airline club miles to get the most out of them. [ Reply | More ]

This is a good card. The sign up bonus is down to 50,000 points now, but still worth it if you are a big spender and a big traveler. I am a big traveler, but not a big spender. I also use my miles from sign up bonuses on free cards to buy my plane tickets and I have free nights from hotels that I can't even use. I don't go out to eat a lot, so it doesn't work for me, but if I were a road warrior who spent a lot of money traveling and ate out a lot, I would get this card. I would definitely get it over the AmEx Platinum Card. [ Reply | More ]

Go for it. Yeah, I can't justify. I travel about 4 times/yr, but I am still burning frequent flyer miles and I need to use them up before they expire or get majorly devalued! Actually, they usually take a couple every year in HS. At least that's been my kids experience. Her school also expects them to get over 90 which can be very tough. But there are some weird things. For example; they only care that she does over 90 in Chemistry OR Physics. The Chemistry test was a bear (even for a kid who tests well and got an A in the class.) The physics test is supposed to be easier so they told us not to worry. [ Reply | More ]

I get the vibe firm the teacher that friend A takes up a lot of her time. My dd reports she cries about something almost daily. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Repost for Sunday crowd: Anyone using TalkSpace for therapy? Trying to decide if it's working for me and whether I like me therapist. Have found it to be a mix of very good to just meh where I feel like she's not really doing anything more than repeating back what I've said with maybe one additional comment of her own added at end. I'm 52 and she is much younger than me, I'm guessing in her 30s. That is starting to bother me as well. I feel like there's feelings/issues she couldn't possibly understand or relate to not having lived them. Can't decide if that is a hindrance to therapy or not. Kind of leaves me with a 'she doesn't 100% get me' feeling sometimes. Thoughts? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Cancer itself is not over-diagnosed. If they find cancer in your thyroid, it's going to be removed. There are probably a lot of nodules that don't necessarily need to be removed, though. My nodule was originally diagnosed in 1996 and I chose not to have it removed (dad's an MD and said it wasn't necessary). I only chose to have it removed about 15 years later because it had become visible in my neck and was bothering me. Only when they removed it did they find the carcinoma. Unfortunately, I also lost my singing voice with the surgery. That was one of the risks that had me putting it off for so long. Oh well. [ Reply | More ]

I had a nodule removed from my thyroid, pathology showed a carcinoma that previous needle biopsies missed. They ended up taking half my thyroid plus some surrounding parotid glands. No biggie. There's only one type of thyroid cancer that's fatal and it's only a few people out of every hundred. I think there's something like a 97% survival rate for everyone else. Thyroid cancer is "good" because it doesn't spread easily and because it sucks up targeted radiation like a sponge soaks up water. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thank you for sharing your experience. I've heard that the "take it all out" vs. "Leave some if you can" debate is a big one. Surgeon is recommending taking all of mine out because if I need the radioactive iodine treatment after surgery, they can't do it if I still have some of my thyriod. A friend who went through this had all of hers taken out and was glad because they would have left the right side, which it turns out also had cancer. I assume you're on synthroid - have you had an problems with it? I know this is the "good cancer" to have and I'm not afraid of dying...I work and have young children and need to figure out the logistics of everything. I've heard the radioactive iodine treatment is almost worse than the surgery. Hoping I don't have to do that. [ Reply | More ]

I currently still have half my thyroid around 6 years out. I have my levels tested every 6 months and so far so good, I'm still in the normal functioning range. They said I have about a 50/50 chance of needing synthroid in the future, but so far that's not today yet. I never needed iodine treatment or radiation because they said it was a 100% surgical cure, they got it all and my parotid glands were clean once examined. Again, though, they didn't realize I had the cancer until they took it out. It was small, about a half a centimeter if I recall correctly. If you have any doubts, follow your surgeon's advice (that's what I would have done). Good luck - it's never a good thing to hear the word cancer, but you'll be okay and will be around for a very long time :) [ Reply | More ]

BTW they did a great job with my scar, it's on a natural neck fold and blends right in. Weirdest thing post surgery was having an incision in my throat at all. It made me randomly want to stop and put both of my hands on the top of my head, as if there were a danger of my head falling off or something. Absolutely no logic to it, just an instinct that I didn't expect to kick in as oddly as it did. Other than that, super easy recovery. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. The thyroid stores the radiation from x-rays at CT scans that you receive in your lifetime. Radiation received as a child is particularly damaging. There is a really interesting study that confirms this. Doctors hypothesized that the thyroid cancer was due to radiation he received as a child. He had no symptoms. An x-ray for a bad back revealed metastasis and they traced it back to the thyroid. Doctors have idea how long all of this had been brewing. Could have been his entire life. No way to know. Once it was detected and they started to treat him, he went fast. I am convinced he would have lived a lot longer without any medical intervention. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I was reading this morning about x-rays and other radiation treatments back in the 60s causing thyroid cancer. That sucks. My dad died of lung cancer. Thanks. My dad lived a long time considering he was a ticking radioactive timebomb. He was seemingly perfectly healthy. No symptoms. He slipped on a wet floor and fell down. His back hurt and he had an x-ray and that was when all was revealed. Many cancers are detected through freak accidents like this. People need to know that people do die from thyroid cancer. It's not always a "no big deal" sort of thing. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Wow, that is so crazy. Makes me wish we could just get body scans once a year to make sure everything is okay. I appreciate your comment about it not always being "no big deal." I talked to a friend who went through this and is now okay but she said it's kind of invalidating and annoying to have people imply that it's no big deal. Things can always be worse, thyroid cancer or other types of cancer, but it's still scary and disruptive and all of that. Anyway, I really appreciate you sharing your story. Thank you. That's really strange, since most kids get dental x-rays regularly, which you'd think would affect the thyroid area. Did your dad actually have a full autopsy or did you just go on a guess from the Drs? My understanding is that thyroid cancer tends not to spread like other cancers. [ Reply | More ]
