op: I finally got her arms distance away after years of trying and just got a $500 check for dc to go into 529 followed by a barrage of texts that she and SIL are concerned about dc's college savings and "SIL has been saving since her dc was born." Meanwhile SIL does not work, has debt, is a shopaholic and puts like $50 a month into the account. DC and I make 4x more and have a financial advisor who advised us not to invest in 529 until we have retirement funded. [ Reply | More ]

I wrote the post about living a good life. I understand how it sucks having someone trying to control your decisions and masking as if they're trying to help. I know it's easier said than done but if you engage in their behavior it'll drive you more crazy. It sounds like you weren't worried about the 529, so since it's not an issue to you and DH it should remain that way even thought they're "concerned". Can DH tell your SIL to stop meddling? op: SIL is actually nice and is just falling right into the hands of my mother. My mother is playing up that "she wants to help dc" go to college. op: And speaking of control my mother also let me know I should not have bought dc a bike for b-day because the inlaws had planned to and "if we had been talking she would have told me." As if I don't want to buy my own kid's first bicycle! And the kicker was the inside information that SIL says DH does not like to throw parties with me because I get too stressed. I get stressed because my mother acts like and asshole and is impossible to make a plan with. [ Reply | More ]

I think they're worse because of all the electronics and jets, personally. Ours turned into an attractive nuisance at our weekend home where kids were breaking in and using it during the week, so we drained it. By spring we found out we had several leaks that had developed over the winter, and the only quote we could even get was 17K to crane it off site. They were very eager to go through our insurance. Some places just hung up on us. If they didn't sell it to us they weren't interested in sending someone. No one fixes them. It's so bad that there are actually websites for suggestions on what do do about your non-functioning hot tub. Like fill it full of dirt and use it as a raised container garden. [ Reply | More ]

I kind of put them in the same category as backyard swingsets. They are expensive and invite other kids to play in your yard if you have one and they don't. If you don't maintain them, bees and wasps love to build nests in the little treehouses, and as soon as your kids stop using them, they are just big deserted eyesores that will cost you thousands to get rid of. Just go to the park. [ Reply | More ]

Our good friends did a crazy cheap swimming pool that they landscaped themselves with perimeter boards trimmed to the grade of their yard, then filled with gravel. their "fence" was metal posts and wire fencing from home depot. They climbed into it with a stepladder. It was ugly as all get out, but the second their kids went to college it disappeared like it had never been there at all. They were smart. [ Reply | More ]

"Harbor sexist thoughts" implies that guys are sitting around being sexist all the time. That isn't the case. I know a few guys who are truly sexist, but they are outliers and are essentially jackasses. I'm not sexist (or at least I don't think I am). I have a DD and hope she ends up being whatever she wants to be. Now, all that said, I don't think men and women are the same. That doesn't mean I think women are inferior, though I do think they are different than men in many ways. Obviously though, there are excpetions - some women are more "masculine" than a lot of men and vice versa. [ Reply | More ]

My younger sister met a guy 11 months ago, had a gorgeous wedding, and they have a 2br apartment in the city and just closed on a 2 million dollar house in Greenwich. I am so so jealous. I love my sister and am really happy for her but I just feel so crappy about myself lately. Your feelings are so normal. I am like you and never experienced feeling of envy (not because life is perfect but because I have a great dh, kids, same). I used to feel like that. But then I started to realize- what's so objectively great about a house in Greenwich? It looks pretty and it has nice things in it, but at some point after you have showed it off to your friends and family it's still just you sitting on a couch. Maybe a nicer couch in a bigger room, but its still just you, there, in a room. There is nothing objectively better or worse about your house or her house. Oh look, she has a better view. She has a nicer carpet. Ok. A month from now it will still be her standing alone at the sink pissed off at her husband for something or other. What's the difference what sink it is that she's standing at? [ Reply | More ]
