that may be true in comparison to a child of the same age who was redshirted instead. But the younger, non-redshirted one has to compete with the older cohort in terms of admissions -- are they disadvantaged a bit there? [ Reply | More ]

schools are not stupid- if they compared just one universe without regard to age, they would invariably end up with a class that is older within the 12 month window [ Reply | More ]

For most American kids there is no competitive basis for admission to K. It's either based on zip code or lottery. Even most US private schools don't admit based on "merit" with respect to the child. I know the NY UMC school situation is different. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Dumb post, but want to complain about this annoying habit with this one mom. She is always concerned with doing things the "right" way. I told her that my DC takes private music lessons. She asks me what instrument he started on. I said cello - his choice. She said, "Oh, they say that the kids are supposed to start on piano and then progress onto a more difficult instrument once they've mastered it." This doesn't make sense for a number of reasons, so I just nod and smile. Then, she goes on for weeks about how she's trying to find the right music school for her DC. I just nod and smile. Nothing is every good enough for her. Our kids were on the community swim team together and she was overly critical of the swim coaches. She couldn't relax during practices and hold a conversation because she was criticizing the coach like a hawk throughout the practice. Then she pulls her kid out and says she found a better league an hour away. I say ok. She asks me to join this league, I say no. She goes on and on about how they won't become competent swimmers unless they join this league. I'm like whatever. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

There is this one FA mom who I really tried hard to give the benefit of the doubt. She was really crass, like screaming at her kid all the time for minor infractions. I do not let my DC associate with hers, but it's not because of the FA thing. It's her--the vulgarity, the lack of manners, her rudeness. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Is Spence considered a TT school? I'm very confused by the information I hear about that school. Somewhere said that they were ranking better than Chapin, others said they were ranked slightly below (in Ivy admissions I think). There was a post a few days ago where someone mentioned "TT" SS girls schools and Spence wasn't listed. Why is it sometimes there and sometimes not? I thought it was one of the better privates on the UES? 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

it is always considered TT on this Board (whatever that means). Often thought of as between B and C in terms of academics. [ Reply | More ]

YES!! Spence is definitely one of the 7 TT - check out the web site, matriculations are excellent. Some mom's are caddy about individual girls schools, but while C B and S may be different, they are all TT. [ Reply | More ]

Its one of the very best private schools in Manhattan. Period. Its also one of the legacy 7 TT schools that traditional Manhattan families have all aspired to send their kids to. That said, its gets its results because, like the others, it only admits the highest scoring kids and counsels out underperformers. Schools that get "lower" results aren't "worse" schools, they are just less selective. Even UB 3T schools are among the very best schools in the country for quality of education. [ Reply | More ]

+1 and agree 100% about Hewitt / other schools. I have a DD at CSH, and DD's best friends are at B and Hewitt - they are both lovely, super smart kids, and what I know about the schools all are wonderful, though I believe B will get more intense at HS, though I'm not sure that means more workload, all the schools load up the kids - they all want to get the best college placements possible. btdt - by HS in terms of curriculum there is nothing that will be the same about H and B. And yes, The B girls will have more work then all the other SS schools by a mile. Not saying that is good or bad, it's just the way it is. [ Reply | More ]

One of the amazing and slightly annoying aspects of Spence (and Chapin) is that their girls don't perform especially well on SAT's but have some of the best college exmissions rates in the country (as in both schools are annually listed among the top dozen schools by any sort of college-based criteria). I'm sure some of it has to do with wealthy parents, but I also think they are very good at teaching and offering up opportunities. Having said that, my experience is that lots of the private schools are excellent and offer an education as good as that of any day school in the country (boarding offers a different sort of experience). But yes, everyone thinks Spence is TT--though some think it's on the snooty end of the TT. [ Reply | More ]
