All in the Family
The TV is buzzing in one room, the computer humming in another and the kids are eating dinner off trays on their laps. Not very "Leave it to Beaver," is it? In honor of National Eat Dinner Together Week, it's time for the family to reconnect.
Parents Jill and Neal Kimball developed Family Table Time, a tool to help bring parents and kids together. The most important thing is to make time – follow through the schedule for family time like any other appointment on the calendar. Kids love when they have a hand in planning, so get everyone involved. Let each person take a turn coming up with something to do – the wackier, the better. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as the family is together.
Below are the Kimballs' ideas for creating a family fun night:
Have an indoor picnic. Spread blankets on the floor, make potato salad and get out the squirt guns.
Make a movie. Let the kids put on a play, or do a remake of your favorite movie.
Host a game night. Monopoly, Parcheesi, Candyland, Hi Ho Cherri-o or Chutes and Ladders are just a few options.
Tee off. Make a miniature golf course in your backyard. Gather doormats, dustpans, paper cups, lightweight balls and mini clubs. If it's raining set up indoors.
Play ball. Pick whichever sport your family enjoys, gather up your equipment and hit the field.
Watch a movie. Rent some oldies, pop popcorn and make milk shakes. Black and white comedies are a blast.
Have a pool party. Don't have a pool or it's chilly outside? Call a local hotel with an indoor pool. Most will let you swim for a fee or rent it for a block of time.
