Dear Diaries
When catching up on your reading means flipping through magazines during your semi-annual pedicure, you can be forgiven for missing a few bestsellers.
We usually prefer the book to the movie – but if you never found time for "The Nanny Diaries," the film version is pretty darn cute. And if you're among the millions who did read it, you'll definitely want to see Hollywood's take on nannyhood.
It goes something like this: When recent college graduate Annie Braddock (Scarlett Johansson) takes a position as a nanny for a wealthy Upper East Side family, she finds herself in the middle of an elite alternate universe – where overscheduled kids get ignored by their overworked dads and over-accessorized moms, leaving nannies to do the parenting. The inconsiderate Mrs. X (Laura Linney) turns out to be the employer from hell, and Annie thinks about quitting daily, but finds herself drawn to her young charge Grayer, whose awful behavior masks a sweet, lonely kid. The cute "Harvard hottie" (Chris Evans) she meets in the X's building offers another reason to stick it out for as long as she can.
The movie opens today, and promises air-conditioned escapism. Pass the popcorn.
