Juno Bug
Sometimes, you just need a break. From uncountable games of pat-a-cake, from sweeping up Cheerios, from pretty much anything kid-related. Instead of reaching for yet another Disney tape or switching on Cartoon Network, try this innovative new DVD series from Juno Baby.
Created by a husband and wife team -- Adam Adelman and Belinda Takahashi -- when they discovered that most videos for very young children (especially those that touted the "Mozart Effect") were poorly produced, with synthesized music and rapid-fire images. They originally launched with Juno's Wonderful Day. Takahashi, an accomplished classical musician and PhD, composed and collected a beautiful mix of music and used live chamber ensembles to perform and record. The video featured a cast of puppet characters (by Fraggle Rock alums), and engaging vignettes of characters and basic concepts, presented at a deliberate, baby-friendly pace.
Realizing they were on to something, they developed a series and have just introduced three new titles (Juno's Rhythm Adventure, Indie's Great Teddy Bear Hunt, and Way to Go, Juno!). Again, classical music is paired with simple story lines and the result is engaging, as little ones are encouraged to interact with the characters. (And should that experience lead to love, there's a collection of adorable Juno t-shirts to help them express it.)
Even if exposure to classical music won't necessarily make your kid a genius, at least it's easy on parental ears. And why not give both you and your baby something soothing to listen to while you check your email?
