Smart Cookie
Every sugar-phobic mother knows traditional pre-packaged cookies should be served to wee ones only on special occasions. But when said store-bought snacks are made from organic ingredients, by an independently owned company, maybe one or two cookies can't hurt.
Late July's new organic dark chocolate and vanilla bean with green tea sandwich cookies fit the bill. Both varieties are made from fiber-rich whole grains, antioxidant-packed organic chocolate and pure, sustainably grown Madagascar vanilla.
The dark chocolate version features two organic cookies and a decadently rich center; the vanilla bean boasts the same chocolate cookies, this time filled with smooth vanilla cream laced with a hint of green tea. All are available in boxes, lunch packs (four packs of four cookies each) and single serving (four cookies) sizes.
Steve Bernard and Nicole Bernard Dawes, the father-daughter co-founders of the Hyannis, Mass.-based brand (Bernard Dawes is also a mother of two), began their company with the goal of creating organic updates on classic snacks. To that end, all the sandwich cookie ingredients – from the wheat flour to the cocoa butter – are organic.
Fear not: If the kids are going to be hopped up on sugar, let it come from a healthy source.
