Life In The Balance

It seems like every parent out there is struggling with the balancing act: One parent's getting home late every night and never seeing the kids, while the other never sees anyone but the kids and hasn't had a business card since the Clinton administration. Or, both juggle full-time jobs and nobody sees the kids (except the babysitter and maybe Grandma).

There's a new breed of parents tired of the “either-or” and fed up with flextime that isn't (not to mention the daggers when they leave the office at noon). Many modern parents are creating new models for blending work and family. Life as You Know It, a new film by Kristina Robbins-Higgins, looks at these pioneering parents up close.

This clever 15-minute film is one of three finalists in a contest sponsored by Audi in which filmmakers were challenged to capture emerging trends. Robbins-Higgins and her husband Nick, a cinematographer, work from their Los Angeles home and raise their toddler son – Finlay – together. Figuring that other creative moms and dads must be cobbling together the same type of arrangement, Robbins-Higgins set out cross-country and filmed four families.

The couples include the makers of Wry Baby T-shirts, an Austin-based musician and kid's clothing designer (ramonsterwear.com), a Boston photographer and brand marketer, and Brooklyn-based restaurateurs who own and run Applewood. What ties these families together is the desire to spend as much time as possible with their kids while they're little, a commitment to shared parenting, and a willingness to embrace hard work and chaos at the same time.

Granted, the couples in the film seem confidant and almost intimidatingly happy with their decisions – something that may put off parents who'd love to attempt the same lifestyle but can't. Still, it's an interesting group and the window into their world provided by Robbins-Higgins is welcome. After all, it's a chance to see how things might be if we did them a little differently.
