Gimme
an A-B-C
When it's time to decorate your baby's room, or find something special
for a newborn, the alphabet is a natural choice it's educational,
gender neutral, and even has its own theme song.
But from a design perspective, the ABCs are often more ZZZ's, as
the little apples, balls, and cats you find on most bedding and
prints might as well be computer clip art. It's time for a more
creative approach.
Two years ago, San Francisco artist Jennie Villanueva was so inspired
by pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Bella that she began
creating what she calls Happy Art for Kids. She hasn't
stopped yet, exhibiting and selling her work in gallery shows and
online. Her ever-growing body of work includes Alphabet Friends,
a charming 26-piece alphabet series with a sweet twist: all the
letters are hiding within the pictures (an elephant's body is hiding
an e, the stem of a flower is made from an f, an ice cream sundae
has a stripe on the dish and a cherry for a dot). The letters come
together in a custom-made name print, which can also include date,
weight and other details if you like. It's the perfect gift for
a new baby, a toddler, or even a big kid.
The characters are also available individually, on original hand-painted
canvases, and will star in their own soon-to-be published ABC book,
so your little one can enjoy all 26 letters, not just the ones in
his own name.
And then he'll really know his ABCs.
