Mothers Know Best
Sometimes you need a fellow mom to let you know what's good for you.
Take Nicole Vaslot and Amanda Moat of Vancouver, B.C, for example. These two seasoned mothers advocate dressing a newborn in a simple kimono. It ties and unties at the bottom to allow unfussy diaper changes, and wraps and unwraps up top for struggle-free wardrobe changes.
Based on smart ideas like this, the duo started their own collection, Westcoast Baby. Infant kimonos come in a handful of muted colors, some with colorful contrast trim – and they're easy to mix and match. Everything else is equally practical: Elastic-free mitts protect babies from scratches, while perfect-fit beanies keep them warm without bulky layers. Westcoast Baby's layette is all made from plush, stretchy cotton jersey, just like your own well-loved T-shirts.
The kimono concept is also adapted for toddlers: Roomy tops and pants for boys and girls come in bold Asian-inspired prints and are sized up to 24 months. For toddler girls, there's a sweet linen halter dress hand-painted with a prism of butterflies; matching panties make summer somersault attempts even cuter. For boys, check out the long-sleeved tee with a sushi appliqué. Other cool concepts include a denim sling-style diaper bag and colorful printed "tooshy rolls" that'll be the envy of the public-bathroom changing table. And the "Nesting Kit" set includes a newborn hat, blanket, and cocoon.
Perfect for when you decide to pass along your newfound wisdom to another new mom.
