My No-Chemical Romance

It's not easy being green – tracking down non-toxic cleaners and cosmetics, paying $3 for an organic tomato. But most would agree it's worth it.

According to the nonprofit Healthy Child Healthy World, there is significant scientific evidence linking chemicals in the household to cancer, autism, asthma, birth defects, ADD/ADHD and learning and developmental disabilities in children. Below are five simple steps, recommended by the organization, for making your home eco-friendly:

Encourage pests to bug off – safely. Avoid insecticides, pesticides, weed killers, lawn products and flea or tick remedies that contain harmful chemicals. Switch to non-toxic brands instead. Prevent insects from coming into your home by putting food away, caulking holes, installing door sweeps and making sure screens are well maintained.

Read labels carefully. Look for cleaning products that say "nontoxic," "bio-based," "chlorine free," "organic," "phosphate free," "natural fragrance" and/or "biodegradable." Avoid personal care products (lotions, deodorants) that contain parabens, petroleum-based ingredients, sodum lauryl, laureth sulfates, synthetic fragrances and artificial colors. Visit safecosmetics.org for a list of companies that have sworn off the most dangerous chemicals.

Clear the air. Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor due to chemicals in household products and substances like formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, asbestos and lead. Open windows whenever possible to provide ventilation. Steer clear of synthetic carpets, as these emit chemicals and trap dust and pesticides. Decorate with plants, which absorb impurities, and invest in an air purifier.

Eat organic vegetables. Look for produce, meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products that are marked "USDA organic." This means that no pesticides were used in growing the food, and animals were treated humanely and not given growth hormones or antibiotics. Wash all fruits and veggies, even organic ones, to remove any traces of chemicals. Avoid processed foods, which often contain chemical preservatives and artificial colors.

Pare down on plastics. Whenever possible, avoid using plastic, which can leach chemicals into foods and drinks. The problem is exacerbated when the material is exposed to heat so never put plastic containers in the microwave or dishwasher; wash them by hand instead. Do not purchase baby bottles, sippy cups, chew toys or other items labeled "3," "6," "7," or "V" as these indicate the most toxic forms of plastic. Products marked "1," "2," "4" or "5" are generally safer.
