New Moms Wear Prada

If you've ever gone through labor, you know it makes absolutely no difference what you wear – or don't wear for the event. But later when you and baby are bonding, that hospital-issued gown starts to feel a bit frumpy (not to mention revealing, especially in the rear). And later when you look at those first photos, you might wish you'd planned ahead the drab ill-fitting gowns make a pretty unattractive backdrop for the newcomer, and you wind up looking even worse than you feel.

The solution: dearjohnnies gowns. After creator Rachel Zinny designed her own gown to wear for her second child's birth, she got such a positive response from the whole maternity ward that she realized she was on to something. Made of 100 percent cotton, dearjohnnies are machine washable and come in two properly-proportioned sizes – unlike the hospital variety, which are one-size-fits all (provided you're a Sumo wrestler).

Available in four whimsical patterns that are trimmed with a grosgrain ribbon, the gowns feature snaps down the back to eliminate flashing, and along the sleeves for easier (and less exposed) breastfeeding. The fabrics make a flattering background for all those newborn portraits you'll be snapping and sending. The gowns also make a unique and thoughtful shower gift for expecting friends, especially with optional monogramming.

Let's face it – when you look good, you feel good. And during those overwhelming first days with baby, we can all use all the help we can get.
