Tee Time
As soon as there's a little bean on the scene, there are a few essentials
we can't get enough of: Sleep, for one; diapers (duh); and the wardrobe
staples of the early years, onesies and T-shirts. When it comes
to these classic cotton duds, there are plenty of designers and
parent-preneurs working to keep the supply ample and hip. Below
are some of the newest, coolest styles on the street.
Glug
Baby
From San Francisco, these hip silk-screen tees are rife with references
to icons of the past like Big Wheels and turntables printed
on brightly colored cotton. For girls, there are pretty, pop-arty
bubbles and flowers, and a silhouette of a bird on a tree branch
that has a peaceful, Japanese feel. Infant to size 4. glugbaby.com.
Tomat
Graphic designer/mom Efi Latief offers a selection of retro style
T-shirts with uber-cool graphics, rock clichés (I'm with
the band), and pseudo-sweet animal motifs like a frog perched
on a lily pad think Urban Outfitters for the under five set.

Infantile
Demoralized after trying to shop for his young niece, Craig Melchiano
decided to create his own T-shirt line for infants with adult-esque
tattoo motifs, cheeky slogans (Where's the Party?), and edgy
designs by artists like Phil Frost and Dave Kinsey. One clever stand
out is the Gold Chains tee, which features a decal of baby
bling hanging from the neckline, complete with solid gold binky.

Kee-ka
Based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the brother and sister team behind
this collection originally designed greeting cards before segueing
into babies' T-shirts, bodysuits, burp cloths and bibs. Single-word
nicknames (peanut, princess, sweet pea, monkey) are scribbled beneath
cute little line illustrations. kee-ka.com.
Cowboy Bleu
Designer Aimee Kicinski, the woman behind Milla Plum, created these
classic T-shirts in collaboration with her son, Julian. The simple
designs feature tweed and twill appliqué animals that boys
in particular will love: a patchwork horse, a moose, a rooster.
It's style sans tongue-in-cheek rock references or clever one-liners.

All Kids Can Fly
Mom/artist Doris Oswald-Burrell aims for mini-fashion that has multi-culti
appeal and an uplifting message. Wild animals printed onto sewn-on
appliqués are fun and cozy, while the I Can Fly collection
jumps to life with Rugrats-type kids doing cool activities like
skateboarding, dancing, and blocking a soccer goal. allkidscanfly.com.
Urban Smalls
These onesies hark from the East Village for sizes 0-12 months.
Each is printed with a funny phrase, from tongue-in-cheek confessions
(My Dad's a Geek), to simple declarations (Bald is Beautiful),
to neoclassic movie lines (No One Puts Baby in the Corner).

HiFi Baby
Created by and for record store junkies, this collection of T-shirts
and tanks celebrates music legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie
Holiday and Jimi Hendrix. Phrases include Play It Loud and
Excuse Me While I Kiss the Sky (it's a Hendrix reference
and if you have to ask
). hifi-baby.com.
