Under Wraps
If you find yourself shopping for presents based on whether or not the store offers gift wrapping, maybe it's time to invest in some supplies of your own. (Face it: Those leftover rolls of red and green aren't fooling anybody.)
Joy by Mel Lim, a purveyor of custom papers, note cards and specialty gifts, offers pretty Asian-inspired wrapping paper. Designer Mel Lim created the line when she had trouble finding cards that weren't white (which happens to be the color of death in Chinese culture). Each of her intricate designs features rich colors, lively patterns and classic symbolic elements. Goldfish and lotus flowers represent wealth and prosperity; a pair of geese symbolize married bliss (ideal for wedding season); and the giraffe (or "eastern unicorn") is a timeless symbol of good fortune.
The luxurious wraps are made from high-quality linen paper printed in deep saturated shades and coated for durability. Matching paper-covered boxes offer an easy alternative for the tape challenged among us, and coordinating letterpress cards complete the look. Or bring home the designs on organic T-shirts, baby clothes, throw pillows and lingerie.
With the right presentation, even the simplest gift becomes extra special.
