The
Mother Load
Celebrity motherhood always seems like
such a fairy tale. Most pregnant stars manage to look fabulous right
up until the last minute à la Ms. Zeta Jones at the Oscars
a few years back. A couple months out of the delivery room, and
they're right back in their jeans, looking toned and well-rested
thanks to a behind-the-scenes dream team of chefs, trainers, and
au pairs. We should all have it so easy.
Then again, there may be more to the story. Just in time for you-know-what
day (when pictures of contented women in soft focus and yellow daisies
will be everywhere), Brooke Shields is revealing a story of celebrity
motherhood that's considerably more real.
Down Came the Rain takes readers through every turn of the
actress's roller coaster ride into parenting, from her struggle
to conceive to a trouble-free pregnancy, to a long difficult labor,
to the crippling sadness and resentment she felt once home. Shields
shares it all: the anxiety, sadness, loneliness, confusion, and
the long journey into recovery through antidepressants and therapy
-- every moment compounded by the extra pressure of living in the
public eye. Beyond her own personal experience, the "Suddenly
Susan" star also offers a range of resources for fellow sufferers.
It's a topic that's gotten more airtime in the past few years, but
postpartum depression can be isolating and scary. Not feeling that
immediate sense of joy and connection can leave a new mother with
overwhelming guilt. It always helps when someone, particularly a
woman who appears to have everything, shares her honest, less-than-perfect
version of events.
