Extra Precious
Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but even best friends need time apart once in a while. Instead of your usual diamond studs, wear little white-gold graphic depictions of diamond studs. They're not pretending to be diamonds. They're almost mocking them.
That's just one of the ideas that make Carrie Weston's baubles different. This California designer doesn't take herself too seriously, even though she does work with serious fine-jewelry materials (sterling silver and 14-karat white, rose and yellow gold). She does a stacked ring that abstractly resembles a hamburger, a tiny hot-dog pendant, a chubby heart form that encircles your finger and even an engagement-ring shaped pendant, so you can wear your "rock" around your neck a la Carrie Bradshaw. The pieces have such a distinctive, modernist vibe that they've landed in the gift shops of some of the country's most notable museums, not to mention stores.
Incidentally, Weston also makes a miniature diaper-pin pendant, which you can monogram as a way to keep your baby close to your heart at all times. Because Weston designed it, it's way less cloying than those birthstone boy/girl silhouette pendants. In fact, it's so cute and realistically pin-looking that your non-mom friends will still want to copy you.
When the credit card bill comes, just explain to Hubby that this second-best-friend was actually a bargain. It's not like you bought diamonds.
