Carried Away
With all the new baby carriers out there, you'd think "babywearing" – a term coined by almighty pediatrician Dr. William Sears – was just invented. But it's actually as retro as you can go. People all over the globe have been hauling around their kids on their bodies for thousands of years.
One of the newest entrants into the field is Baby K'tan. An upgrade from the traditional sling, the Baby K'tan has two loops, instead of one, to better secure the baby to your body. No wrapping or snapping involved, just looping. Developed by two couples raising children with special needs, this new front carrier was created to maximize sensory nourishment, something which is essential for premature babies as well.
The Baby K'tan allows for discreet breastfeeding and can be used with a child up to 40 pounds. The two loops can be arranged in five positions – Explore, Cradle, Adventure, Hug and Hip – in order to best accommodate both parent and child. (Don't worry: It comes with instructions.)
Regarding the comfort factor, the crisscross design and support band help minimize back pain. The Baby K'tan is a carrier with sass; in addition to coming in basic solid colors, it's available in tie dye and camouflage. Monogramming is also an option.
It may be an old concept, but they didn't have choices like these 2,000 years ago.
