 Monkey Business
With so many cutesy things for kids out there, one could get a toothache from all the sweetness. Peculiar and unusual are not adjectives typically used to describe baby mobiles, toys and piggy banks.
But not Our Children's Gorilla. Just as its name might lead you to believe, this Swedish company's designs border on the bizarre, but in a good way. The toys and home objects, created by an array of international indie designers, are organized by material: plastic (a secret-hideout cave abstractly shaped like a skull), wood (a monkey doll with rope limbs, named Gary), metal (robot wall hooks), paper (a friendly ghost mobile), and ceramic (a handmade alien-like piggy bank). Highlights include ape-shaped hangers that dangle realistically from a closet bar, and a minimalist A-frame dollhouse based on a 1960s design by American architect Andrew Gellers.
The company also sells vintage toys, like a giant Playmobil figure and early Fisher-Price wooden puzzles, and a beautiful collection of children's storybooks from Italy (most are also available in English) that will expose your little ones to the work of talented photographers, illustrators and writers from throughout the decades and around the world.
The company slogan? "The children's imagination is our inspiration." Now that's a cause to get behind.
