Tie One On

The apron is one kitchen essential that's long overdue for a makeover. This humble garment protects clothes from spills and spatters, but its association with desperate ‘50s housewives has given the poor apron a bad rap. Time to embrace and reinvent it for a new generation of cooks – and the kids who "help" them.

From Toronto hails Domistyle, an online apron emporium. Designers Jessica Wong and Vanessa Lee have taken the apron from frumpy to funky. These stylish kitchen cover-ups are made of sturdy lined and stain-resistant poly-cotton twill in cool modern colors like baby pink, mocha, light blue, fuchsia and wild orchid. They feature silk-screened graphics that range from the whimsical (dancing martinis, bold polka dots, abstract hearts) to the elegant (birds, orchids, abstract florals). Most are available with optional embroidered phrases like "Yummy Mummy," "Gourmet Goddess," or "Will Cook for Shoes."

Domistyle also offers styles for kitchen-minded kids. Girls can choose hearts, flowers or dots, and boys can get in on the fun with a funky dinosaur print. The aprons also make great smocks for arts and craft projects, gardening and messy meals.

Men's designs are on the way too, so Dad can cook up some pancakes (or better yet, dinner!) with the kids.
