Story Time
After watching independent bookstores get swallowed up by big chains with depressing frequency, where can one find unique and children's imaginative books? You've had it with the movie tie-ins and celebrity vanity projects; you just want great stories and beautiful illustrations – You've Got Mail references aside.
Barefoot Books is an independent children's publisher based in Cambridge, Mass. Their giant collection of illustrated picture books has something for every kid, from Mother Goose and ABC board books to illustrated myths and legends from around the world. Young readers will love the kid-friendly versions of The Odyssey, goddess stories from ancient cultures and folktales from Ireland, Russia and Kenya. Rich, vibrant illustrations bring the tales to life and spark little imaginations.
In addition to varied titles (many available in Spanish) are high-quality prints from the books' original artwork, as well as journals and diaries, calendars, puzzles, CDs, musical instruments, and custom plush toys and puppets. You can find these products online, at high-end boutiques and the flagship store in Cambridge, or through home sales events (the literary equivalent of Tupperware parties). The one place you won't find these treasures: chain stores.
It'll foster a love of reading while spreading the indie spirit.
