Fertility Rites

Chances are that someone you know – maybe even you yourself – has struggled with fertility. While no one can guarantee to have the solution, recent research from The Nurse's Health Study suggests that lifestyle choices like what you eat and how active you are can help increase the odds. The expert authors (Hahvahd types) of the book "The Fertility Diet" offer tips to boost fertility including:

  • Avoid trans-fats, the artery-clogging fats in fast food.
  • Use more unsaturated vegetable oils, and cut back in saturated fats in meats and other sources.
  • Eat more vegetable proteins, like beans and nuts, and less animal proteins.
  • Choose whole grains and other carb sources with lower, slower effects on blood sugar and insulin.
  • Drink a glass of whole milk, ice cream, or full-fat yogurt every day.
  • Take a multi-vitamin that contains folic acid and other B vitamins.
  • Get plenty of iron from fruits, vegetables, beans and supplements (but not from red meat).
  • Coffee, tea, and alcohol are okay in moderation – but skip the sugary soda.
  • If you are overweight, losing between 5 to 10 percent of your weight can help ovulation.
  • Start a daily exercise plan.
