Winter is rough on everyone's skin, but infants need special protection from the wind, sun and cold. Below, Dr. Allison Vidimos shares some tips from the ASDS on protecting baby during these mean months.
Moisturize Daily: Since a baby's skin is less resistant to bacteria and other irritating substances, moisturizing is essential. It helps protect against runny noses, drooling, windburn, sun exposure and other irritants. To minimize dry skin, a baby should be moisturized with fragrance-free lotion immediately after a daily, lukewarm bath.
Avoid Over Bundling: Use comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to minimize friction against baby's skin. Add a hat that covers the ears, a warm jacket and a fleece or blanket to cover baby's legs. When fastening a baby in a car seat, take off his jacket and opt for a blanket over the straps. At night, breathable fabrics will reduce the risk of skin rashes.
Monitor Skin: If tiny red pimples or red, flaky patches appear, the baby may have developed a skin rash or eczema.
Trim Nails: If baby develops a skin condition, trimming her nails will prevent scratches to already irritated skin, which can lead to secondary infections.
Sunscreen: Since the snow reflects sunlight, the UV rays of the sun during the winter are just as intense as during the summer. Infants should be shielded from the sun, particularly during the hours of 10am and 3pm, when the sun's rays are most damaging to the skin.
