Sports? Trinity has a full range of high school sports teams. Girls teams include soccer, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, softball, track & field, swimming and volleyball. The girls soccer team won the New York State independent school championship this year. Here's a link to an article in the NY Post on their victory: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/high_school/soccer/item_VYWa7Qs0pqoBAyf2Z5FqxK [ Reply | More ]

B most definitely does NOT have a dog eat dog kind of feel. My dd is in the hs, and I was actually really surprised by the lack of competition between the students. Because the academics are so strong I assumed it would be dog eat dog, but it's not. Yes, it is true girls feel pressure--from themselves and the standards set by teachers--to do well, but girls are happy for each other and there's no comparing of grades or anything like that. In general, I think the atmosphere at B is wonderful. Yes, there's pressure, but there is at all of these schools. The girls are all passionate about something, whether that's art or ancient languages or physics, and it makes for a great environment. [ Reply | More ]

The idea that there's an "obvious" choice between these two is absurd. They are both great schools. Academically, and with respect to exmissions, each is among the top handful in the city. That said, there are some obvious differences - size and ss v. coed among the most obvious. Whether larger or smaller is better, or ss or coed is better, is a matter of personal preference. I agree with the poster above that this should be dd's choice. You can't go wrong with either and dd should choose the one where she feels most comfortable. [ Reply | More ]

I think in high school you really need to want ss for dd. I think that is what your decisions is. Dd will make friends and be happy at both schools, academics+ a draw. Do you think she will be intimidated by boys OR do you think she will benefit from them?? [ Reply | More ]

Although I agree that the ss/coed distinction is very important, it's not necessarily about being intimidated or benefiting from the presence of boys. Of the girls in my dd's grade nearly all have male friends and like being with boys. But ss allows for a different kind of academic and social atmosphere. The girls come into school wearing sweatpants--even pajamas--and have no problem being 100% themselves because there's no pressure to impress boys. There's also a lot less drama than at many of the coed schools. [ Reply | More ]

A friend had a ds at T and a ds at B. She always said she thought the social life at T got in the way of academics, and was extremely glad her dd chose B. (FYI dd is very social, lots of friends, just doesn't feel pressured to be at every "it" party every weekend.) B. a much tighter HS community. T. is so large in HS it breaks down into stereotypes ( jocks, nerds, stoners, etc...) in a way that that the smaller schools don't. [ Reply | More ]

If you haven't seen it with your own two eyes... I would keep quiet. Children at that age tend to lie about things to make themselves look better in front of their friends. If there is sexual activity going on the only thing you should probably do is talk to your child. If you talk to the other parents...they might possibly talk to their children and say "Ms_____ told me that this has been going on in your grade"....which will probably create an awkward situation for your son or daughter. I can believe that. I gave my first blow job when I was 13 and that was in the mid 80s. I have to say, this is one area in which I'm happy I have two boys. I mean, I will pound it in to their head to be respectful of women, and better yet, their father is a great role model, but still, it's a different set of worries. There was a pretty hideous group of boys in my grade and a grade older and some truly vile stuff went down. If my son turns out that way, I'd be absolutely horrified. [ Reply | More ]

...AND I don't believe the "mind your own business" mentality when it comes to various situations, under aged sexual activity being one of them. An 8 year old is still very young. Between peer pressure and the kids who are sexually molested, therefore pass on the behavior to their peers, I believe the situation needs to be monitored. If it were my child (son or daughter), I would want to know. It's not about what's right or wrong in relation to sex. It's about physical and emotional safety, which should be our top concerns for our children. [ Reply | More ]

Short of you having witnessed the act, I'm not sure how you could know specifics. If you were told information by an adolescent, treat it as unreliable. Are bj's happening? Most likely. But the specifics of how common it is or the kids involved would be suspect as relayed by any kid. If you suspect it is happening on school property (in the prop room during play rehearsal, etc.), I would talk privately to the school and emphasize that you've heard something and you have no idea if it is true. Do NOT go directly to parents unless you witnessed it. [ Reply | More ]

Parent your own chid about sex to begin with. Then if you are in a private, bring up sexuality in general at a PIA meeting (if you have them), or talk to your school nurse about how topics of sexuality are handled in school. You can't really know what is going on (and with who), but you can advocate for appropriate support. [ Reply | More ]

(Sorry pushed wrong key) the school needs to be aware of this; maybe your best bet is to write a note to the principal, cc pta president, and the nurse and just very discreetly mail it to them, do not use your name; you need to protect your child mentally and physically. And also, If it is your child who confided in you how do you think he/she is going to feel if you do absolutely nothing about it; will your child feel confident enough to come back to you with other problems? A child who I have never known to lie witnessed it and reported it to a few other children. The children inside that particular circle have discussed it and the children involved don't deny it. None of the children seem to think it's a big deal. Many children would have to be lying for it not to be true. It was not on school property. No one seems to think I have a responsibility to the other parents or to teh children involved, as an adult. Everyone seems to think that I should mind my own business, and protect my own interests. I feel a bit guilty as I would like to know if I was the parent of one of the children, particularly one of the girls. There is a sex ed curriculum in the school that seems quite good. My impression is that the school is aware that things like this happen. [ Reply | More ]

I still maintain it is NOT reliable information. I'm sure stuff is going on, but how much and by whom is a big question mark. For example, some of the kids who don't deny it may in fact have not been involved. Tremendous peer pressure (and it goes both ways) at that age. You also don't know how different parents will handle the info. If you are really concerned, talk to the school about it generally (do NOT name names) in terms of sex ed, etc., but don't drag individual parents and kids into it. [ Reply | More ]

Unfortunately, all you can do is focus on your own child: self-esteem issues, not using/being used by others, information about communicable diseases, and birth control. Girls who do that this young often have self-esteem issues and certainly develop as a result of this behavior. btdt and have seen my nieces and their friends develop all sorts of issues b/c they are just too young psychologically for this one-way "relationship". There is definitely a "kill the messenger' mentality among middle school parents. Parents generally do not want to be told about their kids questionable behavior by other parents. not a school problem, but you might want to talk to other moms to see what they're hearing. Some may have no clue it is happening. it is really up to the parents to talk to their kids about sex. it does happen at this age unfortunately. talk to your kids about safe sex and your feelings about sex. one middle school had an outbreak of gonorrhea of the mouth. parents were dropping middle schoolers at the movies and they would slip out to the back alley and the girls would give bjs. they dont really see it as sex - it seems harmless to them because they cant get pregnant, but they can get soooo many other things, and it bad for their self esteem (and reputation) to be doing this at 11 or 12. i have a 12 yo dd. [ - ] My dc is at Delta 6th grade and I am disappointed - I thought it would be more challenging. He is a smart boy, but from what he is telling me, almost everyone gets 95s on their report cards. He has done little writing. He seems to have only about 30 minutes of homework each night. I am not fishing for compliments - Does it get more challenging in the 7th or 8th grades? I can't see him just noodling around for another 3 years, but I can't afford private school. Is Delta so great? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Your dcs experience is not typical - homework fluctuates and varies by teacher, but most dc have anywhere from 1 hour - 3 hours or more per weeknight, including time spent on long-term projects. Why don't you send him to Hunter if you're unhappy. [ Reply | More ]

op: Bingo. Nowhere else to go. I want traditional, rigorous education - that is what Delta is supposed to be. I think Hunter's progressiveness would grate on me, and Anderson's unsettledness would make me uptight. And I'm not even sure those are possible options. [ Reply | More ]

Well at this point, your dc would have taken the Hunter HS test if he had qualified. Hunter HS, by the way, is rigorous and not progressive. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Does anyone else "translate" dh's directives to dcs so as to make dh seem nicer? For example, today dh asked me to tell ds to put down the "g. d." game controller and come help him. I said to ds, "Your Dad thought you could help him ...." ds hopped up and gladly went to help. I know if I had delivered the message in it's original form ds would have been a sullen helper. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

not anymore. ex dh sent me an email today because dd wants to get her christmas presents from his apartment. he wouldnt let her take them home (itunes cards, gift cards). she hasnt wanted to see him (hasnt for about a month - her choice). so his response to my question on when she would get her presents was that she will get the f#%#ing presents when he f$%#@ing sees her. i showed dd email (she's 14) and she is so disgusted by his attitude. next time she sees him she will probably act out her displeasure.kharma. My oldest is 10yo, but I tell her very directly that nothing she does online is private. I tell her she can keep a private diary and I will not read it, but nothing on the computer. We allow our kids extensive computer usage, but monitor every thing. I think it's responsible. [ Reply | More ]

I think this is exactly right. We gave our 10 yo an Ipod Touch and I allow him access to the WiFi at home with the understanding that at any time I can ask for the Ipod and see what's on and that I may pick it up at any time when he's not around. I like you're refinement that you won't snoop in a written diary -- you'll basically look at what anyone else could look at, but not what she keeps truly private. [ Reply | More ]

having email & cell phone is a privilege the she has with the understanding that i can check at anytime. i have passwords for all including facebook. cyberspace is too open to dangers and embarassment. diary is a differnt story. i wouldnt look in that. her father decided to read her personal writings and it has really damaged their relationship because he was angry about what she wrote, discussed it openly with his family and girlfriend, and totally humiliated dd. internet is different because it is public domain. I do it all as often as I can. I specifically removed content from his FB page that he posted in anger, which was totally inappropriate (complaining about school and parents), so I just went in and removed it! I explained why, etc....He de-friended me, but forgot I still know his password! I was checking it often, but haven't seen anything bad lately, so am checking less. But, I will still go in and remove anything I think I need to - only I am not telling him anymore, b/c I know he will change his password! I also check phone texts routinely, but haven't seen anything to concern me lately, so have stopped. My DS is about 14. We do not live in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

Hell- I read my husbands email and phone texts. Yes, I'm invasive, but it's my home and I run the roost. Read as much as you like but here's the thing: you have to let them be teens. Being a teenager includes doing some things that your parents would frown upon. You have to be able to know when to react and when to be like, "Oh G-d, but they will survive" Most importantly you have to know how to handle the situation so that they don't know you snooped. Sometimes that means biting your tongue and keeping watch until the begin slipping up or manufacturing a reason why you know what you know. [ Reply | More ]

Well, the main reason I removed his post was that he insulted his school and could have gotten in SERIOUS trouble w/school (totally not worth going through all that just to teach him a lesson I can teach him w/o dire repurcussions on his record) and he insulted me. "In a unanimous 1979 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Smith v. Daily Mail that the First Amendment protects the right of journalists to use the names of minors in newsworthy stories as long as the information is “lawfully obtained” and “truthfully” reported." I think it's a policy of some newspapers, including the New York Times, to not name a minor accused of a crime. The fact that the minor involved is a child of a prominent politician may override the standard policy though. [ Reply | More ]
