[ - ] How many IUIs do we do until we move to IVF? 33 y/o now, TTC for about 10 months, unexplained infertility. One Clomid IUI cycle under our belts so far. Only got one follicle but doc said that was fine. 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

ugh, that totally sucks. Have you done all the other crap like taking synthroid, acupuncture, chinese herbs, the other fertility med (not clomid, which thins your lining) that increases your lining, estrogen? [ Reply | More ]

Yes to all except synthroid. Lining was good with Clomid this time around so hopefully will continue to be ok. I don't think I would do more than one more round of Clomid anyway, though, before moving to injectables. [ Reply | More ]

well, my thyroid levels tested within the normal range, but RE still put me on them because one test came back with a spike that he said could be because my body wasn't producing enough and so my body compensating by overproducing. [ Reply | More ]

Yep, talk to your RE. It's only an issue if your lining isn't thick enough to support an embryo. That was my deal (thin lining), so I did the other med (forgot what it was called) plus estrogen pills. [ Reply | More ]

It can thin the lining of your uterus, which can negatively affect implantation. But as long as you are being monitored then I'm sure it's ok-- it's one of the things they look for when they do your ultrasound starting on day 12 (or around then). [ Reply | More ]

We did 6 IUIs (3 Clomid and 3 with injectables) before IVF. First IVF worked and I now have twin 10 year olds. In hindsight all those IUIs were a waste of time (for me).. but I do know women who got pregnant with IUI. I was 33/34 when going through IUIs and also unexplained infertility. GL! [ Reply | More ]

HOnestly, if it's unexplained I would just go to IVF. Because who knows even if an IUI is solving the problem (it's just getting the sperm closer to the goal) You have to do the injections either way, and with IVF they have much more control over the process. [ Reply | More ]

(and I did both IUI and IVF - 2 failed IUIs before a sucessful IVF. I knew my problem though - no ovulation. IVF actually started as IUI cycle and they overshot with the drugs and too many follicles so my dr converted me to IVF) [ Reply | More ]

Yeah... it's just such a toss-up, part of me hates all these drugs/hormones/etc. and thinks I should stick to the more minimally invasive stuff (such as the IUI) and just be patient, but the other part of me just wants to go right to what I know will have a much better shot of working-- the IVF. It's a tough decision, as I'm sure you know! [ Reply | More ]

18 DPO is still pretty early. It will probably darken over the next several weeks. Also, every brand of pregnancy test is different. I had the cheap ones from Amazon. do you have enough money to try again if first attempt isn't successful? How old? Can you doctor help you decide based on your financial circumstances and age because twins really is high risk. We transferred 2 but they were very high quality blastocysts (and I had 8 other high quality blastocysts to freeze, so they knew that the cycle had produced strong embryos). The embryologist who showed me the blastocyst images on the screen basically said, "Tell them you'll be seeing them again in 9 months time!" I thought that was so cute but also sort of weird/overconfident, but she was right! I think that the embryologists and REs have gotten pretty good at "knowing" the embryo odds and advising you how many to try. I had not said, "No twins!" I think if I had they would have told me one would do it. [ Reply | More ]

I also found this to be a torturous decision. At 39yo I was exactly the sme, terrified of twins. I transferred 2 in 1st cycle, didnt get pg and had 0 embryos to freeze (despite getting many eggs and over a dozen fertilized). Second round, got lots of eggs and embryos. Transferred 2 again. For a while it wasn't clear if it was twins or singleton. And at that point i had warmed up to the idea of twins, i was thrilled to be pg. Ended up being a vanishing twin and now I have one beautiful baby girl. [ Reply | More ]

well i do not know if you can actually control this, but i have heard that the closer to ovulation you have sex the more likely it is to be a boy. so if you know when you ovulate, have sex 3 days before, as female sperm survive longer, so by the time the egg is released it is more likely that female sperm will fertilize the egg. conversly, i think you can time sex 3-5 days after ovulation and it is said to more likely be a girl. I'm almost 34, husband is 36; already had slew of bloodwork, HSG, sperm analysis, etc., all came back normal other than slightly low progesterone which doc said is not a big deal. You are able to provide financially for just one. You also are able to provide more time and attention to just one DC. The disadvantages are they are often lonely, spoiled, and a bit entitled. They also tend to be more mature, which is both good and bad. I am speaking from experience. DH and I waited too long to have DCs only able to conceive one DD. She is now in late twenties. She has issues with behavior, DUI, public intox, she is very spoiled and depended on us financially for far too long. Would act inappropriate when things were not going her way. She really did not stop all this behavior until about age 25. She ended up graduating top of her class at Ivy League here in NYC. Is engaged to be married to a man who comes from a large family (he is one of 8 DCs) and I honestly believe this is what made her finally grow up. She used to be very selfish and since getting in relationship with this man she has straightened up. I'm sure majority of the cons could have been prevented had we change our parenting style. We just adored her so and spoiled her to the point of enabling. I know a few other couples of only children and they too had similar cons as their only DC aged. [ Reply | More ]

Mom of a single. The pros are you can give more attention and resources and have a close relationship. This can make the child happier and more successful. Also no horrible sibling rivalry or bad blood between siblings (happens so much). The cons are that an only, unless he/she is naturally social, can be lonely and thin-skinned because deprived of the rough give and take of a sibling relationship. [ Reply | More ]

We chose to have one child and have no regrets. Pros: Quality of time and care she receives from each of us; we are very close (I honestly believe that it's a different kind of relationship than multi-child families, not that you can't be close to more than one kid); we have time for ourselves, our marriage and other interests (exercise, hobbies, etc.); we can comfortably afford private school, travel, extracurriculars, etc. Cons: The dynamic is more intense (smaller family means we are all very tuned in to each other); Hard not to helicopter since you are so invested in one child; Small family means fewer relationships (if she has no kids, I won't have grandchildren). In our case, our dd hasn't pined for a sibling, she makes friends easily and doesn't have an issue with sharing or teamwork. We don't feel like we need to "try harder" with playdates, we follow her lead in terms of interest/frequency. We feel like it's a very cozy and complete family. [ Reply | More ]

I'm an only and couldn't be more different than previous poster's experience. I was always quick and happy to share with friends since I never had to at home. Not spoiled nor entitled. However, I was very lonely growing up and always pined for a sibling. However my parents were very hands off and basically took no interest, I was always left to fend for myself. Which was good in that I made friends easily but sometimes it was just really, really lonely. All that being said, looks like DS will be an only and I wish I could give him a sibling. ALthough his experience will be very different from mine. I really think a lot has to do with parenting style vs how many siblings you have. I knew plenty of people who were spoiled and entitled (and still are!) and they had siblings. If I had a choice and could financially provide, I would have more than one. [ Reply | More ]

I'm an only, and was painfully shy/introverted as a teen/young adult. But I also had a rough childhood--dad died early, mom depressed, etc. I grew out of it but it took a lot of conscious work. Looks like we will have an only too. For various reasons, but mostly age and finances. Not my ideal choice, but I also know that an only child just has a different kind of life--develops great inner resources of imagination and strength, and generally will be fine. [ Reply | More ]

Dr. Linda Ellison here. I do fertility therapy. New to the City--just moved from Boston/Harvard. Have you considered working with some alternative modalities to compliment the IVF process? Stress is a major infertility factor for both men and women lots of research is showing. Many doctors won't tell you this or explain how stress hormones decrease your fertility capacity...but the endocrine system is all connected and you might just need a little more time doing yoga, building your core relationships, and focusing on creative projects as positive, stress reducing outlets. Dr. Linda Ellison here. I do fertility therapy and tell women to expect to be off any type of hormonal BC for a full 6 months before getting pregnant. It may happen before that, but it takes awhile for your body to reset after being on BC...especially for so many years. Give it another month, and in the meantime make sure you are eating fertility-friendly food and getting endorphine boosts from yoga, running, whatever you like to do to counter stress in your daily life. Stress is a major factor in infertility. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I'm 43, going through IVF with my own eggs, am only going to try getting pg for 3 more months. Do I bother with PGD testing of embryos? Is it worth the expense or should I just transfer whatever embryos I have? Right now there are two embies growing nicely and looks like they will make it to blastocyst. I don't know what to do. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If you do PGD, I think they end up freezing the embryos. PGD has to be done on day 5 or 6 (after fertilization), then it takes some time for the results to come back. I could be wrong though. What does your RE say? Mine recommended not doing it because it would delay the transfer. My first IVF cycle ended up in a chemical pregnancy (technically a miscarriage), genetic testing on me showed no problems so we just went for round 2 and we were successful. I was 39 then, 40 now and expecting in April. [ Reply | More ]

OP: In the last year I had one d&c at 8 wks conceived through IUI (blighted ovum), and one very early mc that I would have mistook as a heavy period had I not had a blood test (no pg symptoms at all). I love my doc and she says it's up to me, but advises PGD to avoid another mc. I'm just afraid of paying all this $$ and finding out no embies are viable. Plus I don't want to wait another 2 months to transfer (doc says I should do another round of meds/extraction to get more eggs, then test in Feb, then transfer in March). By then I'll be two months older which at my age is a lot! Plus it means I'd have only one shot at getting pg since we'd want the baby born this year (DS is 2.5 and we want the kids to be no more than 3 yrs apart in school). My lining and hormones look good this cycle. I'm tempted to just go for it with whatever I get this month. [ Reply | More ]

PGD could damage the embryo. Just put any you get in and hope for the best. [ Reply | More ]

This is not true anymore. If you culture on Day 5 you are now taking some of the outer cells at a time when there are hundreds. It used to be that PGD was done on Day 3 when you would take once cell from a 6-8 cell emby and that could damage. We did PGD on 5 frozen blasts and it turned out only 1 was normal. We then implanted that one and we now have DD. [ Reply | More ]

Hi OP. I got pregnant with twins from IVF. I was younger than you (38) but still considered "advanced maternal age". What we did was transfer 2 embryos (no PGD) and then we did amnio. Normal amnio and we breathed easy. My boys are now 10. :) Best of luck to you! [ Reply | More ]

I am 38 and going through ivf with PGD right now. I get the testing results on Tuesday. I too was concerned about the possible damage to embryos, but my RE says that is very rare these days. Their office does not recommend PGD testing for less than 3 embryos because its possible that the embryos are not of good quality. I would go ahead and just transfer both. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks, hope it works out for you! Just heard that my two embies are progressing normally and are grades B and C. Think I'm just going to transfer both and keep my fingers crossed. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't use them for fertility but you could call them and inquire if they do fertility too. Evelyn Li and Michelle Bombacie. Amazing. [ Reply | More ]

I used Dr Wu. Really nice guy who really understands TTC. Went to him while going through IVF at Cornell so not sure what was more beneficial. Was successful and have a healthy 8yo. [ Reply | More ]
