My ds has it as part of his IEP. He sees a counselor 1/2 hour a week at school. TOTAL waste of time and I can't express that enough. I had it taken out of his IEP this year. The "counselor" is not qualified. It may be different at each school.

No way, kids pick that up from older kids. Teenagers often say horrible shit and preteens copy. They stop in college usually.

College student here: it really doesn't stop. The athletes are usually the worst offenders when it comes to stuff like this (both the men's and women's teams)

Do they really mean it or is it just a stock phrase? I'm not condoning it, I'm just curious. I have college age cousins who hang out with friends who are gay and they all say it.

If a 5 yr old said that I'd wonder more about home, but at 13 - it's all about the peer group. Those girls may have the kindest parents in the world, they may not, but what you're hearing and seeing says more about who they are hanging out with than anything else.

Ha - I view it like this - I think "you are so gay" has a nice ring to it when cursing/acting a fool much like "you son of a bitch"...there are some curses and phrases that just stick well even though it's not PC to say them.

Get a second opinion before you waste your money. Tons of kids (especially 1st born and dual language) don't speak until 3 - 3.5. All kids are different. My first barely said a word until 3.5 when he went to school. #2 came out babbling and hasn't shut up since. There are pros and cons to both.

I agree with above, get a second opinion. We took 1st to speech therapist. It took him a couple of years to stop talking like her. She would teach him to say things like "dino" when he was perfectly capable of saying "dinosaur". She would say "I.WANT.the.ball.please." instead of "May I have the ball, please." For the next 2 or so years ds would continue to put the emphasis on "want" and robotically pronounce each word. So again, get a second opinion.

If she does not qualify for EI don't do it. She will come into her own. 20 years ago it would never have come up on any Peds radar.

We are in Park Slope and work with Lori Genna. She is absolutely fabulous and our daughter took to her immediately. Similar situation, she is understanding everything and has some single words but wasn't combining words at all. Now while working with Lori her language and word combinations are expanding. I can't say enough good things about her! Plus, she will come to your home or dd's school. Contact number is 917-903-2448.

Ditto. Love Lori Genna! She works at NYU Medical Center-Rusk Institute and does private therapy also. She has tons of experience with kids speech therapy. She has done wonders for our ds. I sit in on his sessions at home and she teaches me what to practice with him during the rest of the week. Highly recommend her!

While it's true that some kids come into their own, others do not. Our ds was almost 5 y/o and still very speech and language delayed. He did qualify for CPSE but the therapist they sent were just abysmal. They either didn't show up, showed up late, or seemed as if they had no clue what to do with our son. Lori has been fabulous, experience definitely shows, and we are willing to pay for it. To each his own. As I said some kids may grow into their own, but others may not and we have found that waiting was not the answer for our son. In our opinion, if there is a true issue, the earlier a professional can intervene the better.

Totally agree- I found our CPSE therapist to be horrible. We called and asked for a new one and she was just as horrible. Although its a free service, it's as the saying goes "you get what you pay for." If you are truly worried about your son, I'd see if your insurance will pay for it and either take him to an office or try a private practioner. We decided to go private route bc of convenience at home, and our insurance reimbursed us for about 75% of it. Ask your insurance if they will remimburse you for "out-of-network" providers.

We are in Carrol Gardens and also use Lori Genna. I have found her to be outstanding. We have a special needs child. I am not the type of person to right reviews or give recommendations often. But she is that good. She is so knowledgeable, so nice, and her experience at NYU has helped her really know what to do to help our daughter, as well as point us in the direction of other professionals that we needed to see to get comprehensive treatment for our daughter. She has made so many gains, we are so proud of our little girl!

You should call and make sure that they received it and that there isn't someone else you need to send it to (our school "lost" mine the first time). Stay on top of the process since it is late in year you may not get through the process until next fall. Good Luck!

They called me already and an evaluation is 'being scheduled'! But it was funny, they definitely tried to talk me out of doing the evaluation. If I hadn't known that I have pretty much an absolute right to it, I likely would have been dissuaded. Annoying. Also makes me wonder how certain other children of parents (recent immigrants who don't speak english as well, etc) get the help they need when the schools certainly don't help you to understand your rights. The counselor- who btw doesnt know my child from Adam so would have little idea of what his issues are- was trying to discourage me from doing it and I had to ask her point blank whether she was telling me that I *couldn't* have one. She hemmed and hawed and said she wasn't saying no, and I then had to say "well, I have asked for one in writing and I am confirming that request here on the phone. I WANT an evaluation for my dc." It stinks that the schools are like this.

My ds went to CDC (at their old location). We loved the teachers and all the specialists. It is a really good preschool and is really great with speech language issues. We are still friends with many of the families we met there. It is a great community.

I don't think there is any reason to pick CPELC over CDC. CDC is AMAZING and the new location is beautiful. All the kids take the bus, and the teachers and therapists are wonderful. Very nurturing, and most importantly they really help with exmissions and T5.

Both but behavior at home much easier than school. I'm home with DS and his baby sister and he is sometimes a handful but mostly great with me. School called me today to tell me about some acting out today and I'm just sobbing.

Yes, I've been using a combination of 1-2-3 magic and time outs, plus a lot of positive reinforcement and praise for good behavior (Nurturing the Difficult Child) and I feel like we have some successes but then I get these calls from school and it's devastating. They tell me about these behaviors that just shock me because it's so far away from anything I see at home. I know a big element is being the class clown and having an audience. Ugh. Beside myself.

I have to say, I agree. Parents just need to have zero tolerance for anything resembling that kind of behavior at home (punish by taking away privileges--tv, playdates, dessert) and also need to talk to the kid seriously and calmly about WHY it's not okay a few hours after each outburst when kid can process what happened. Keep doing this, and in vast majority of cases, the outbursts diminish in frequency and intensity with time. At 5yo, it's relatively normal for a strong willed boy to act out in outrageous ways, but you need to nip it in the bud.

But ps, I appreciate your comment. I can see how it does sound a bit like, "well, he's a 5 year old boy." But there is a pattern of disruptive behaviors in school that we have been struggling with and I'm trying everything. I really don't think medication is the right way to go, but I'm starting to think we need to explore that route as well.

Still preK. We have been working with a psychologist and some new discipline techniques have helped us a lot, but the last few weeks it seems like every other day is something crazy at school. I have tried vitamins and omega 3 supplements, plenty of protein and substantial breakfasts, cut down sugars.

It depends on what his diagnosis is. If he has a mood disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD etc. If the parents are anti medication I do not think any reputable place will be against a trial of behavior modification as a first step. However it seems like the child is already seeing a psychologist who is doing this and this psychologist realizes it is more than just a behavioral issue which is why she recommended child mind institute

OP here...everyone thank you so much for weighing in. Sometimes this board can really be so great when you just need another person to hear you! We aren't going to jump right at medication. Definitely going to try everything we possibly can without them...I'm hoping that the Child Mind Institute might be able to give us a diagnosis and then we can explore all our options when we have more information about what exactly the problem is.

I sent you the two thousand dollars last week by Western Union for the plane tickets and visa fees for the baby nurse you promised, but she was not at the airport. Can you please update?

of course. why wouldn't it be? I'm not in that position, but I can't imagine not wanting the best education for my dc even though he/she had autism.
