When the child do not process sounds at an appropriate speed - as in they are better at reading directions and following them than hearing them but to a skewed extent. They also have a hard time learning foreign language in a setting that emphasizes spoken language heavily. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] 2nd grade DS's teachers just emailed me and said they are going to recommend him for a CCT class next year. He is doing so so in regular gen ed, but has been lazy about finishing homework and often seems to space out in class. He had delays as a baby- and received plenty of services- but we are now down to just one speech session a week. Anyone have similar experiences to share? I don't know what to do. 28 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My DS was in CTT for several years through elementary (discharged when he got older.) It was a good experience for him, but what I've heard is that the CTT programs can vary a lot by school. Can you talk to the parents of kids currently in the 3rd grade CTT class? Get their opinion of the teachers. That's the key. Talk to parents of both special ed and gen ed kids to get the full picture. [ Reply | More ]

this is helpful, thank you. can you think of the types of questions i should ask? also, my concern- posted above- is that perhaps the class would have so many 'disabled' kids that it could slow him down. then again, maybe he's the kid slowing other kids down, i really don't know. i'm just so frustrated and confused. I understand your concern, it's a common one. I did not find that CTT held my DS back at all academically. My DS had moderate speech disorder but was academically advanced. CTT absolutely allowed him to work to his highest level, even though there were others in the class who were not as advanced. Also, regarding the worries about the potentially disruptive kid. My experience was that CTT teachers were very alert to this. One year, there was a child who could not sit still and participate. He was moved to another class before the second week of school. In a later year, there was a child who also was transferred to another school midyear. I heard through the grapevine that it was determined his needs could not be met in CTT so the DOE made a change. NP, just FYI, my daughter is in a CCT-style preschool, and several of the special needs kids are extremely bright and sweet, they just need different therapies or learning accomodations. It's really not about intelligence--learning disabilities are different than mental delays. The worst behaved, most disruptive boy is a "typically developing" child, btw. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My DS is a late fall birthday so started school when he was 4. Cognitively advanced, academically in the dumps.Had IEP and they want to move him to 1st grade CCT class. Private speech and language eval said he has significant auditory processing issues at this point. Only considered a delay because he is too young to test for an actual disorder. Apparently, this part of the nervous system makes a big jump between 5 and 6. We feel he would be better repeating kindergarten as he is having massive confidence issues and really hates reading and writing, he realizes he is having major issues in these areas compared to peers. Ad we believe it will give his system time to mature and he won't be missing more advanced content while that is occurring. They say he is too smart and will be bored. His reading and writing is no where near what would be needed for a first grade general ed class. According to DOE regulations it is principal decision after consulting parents and teacher and she is siding with teacher to push him to 1st CCT. Have found out that she did not speak with neuropsych as we had expected so we feel she is not truly listening to our side of the argument. Is there anything we can do? Seems like we have no rights in this and that usually it is the school recommeding holding back and then it is up to the parent. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

yes - but I don't know if you will do it. In public school, if you miss over a certain number of days they are not allowed to pass you. You would have to walk that fine line of keeping your child out of school that number plus one and not having the teacher/principal report you to social services. It can be done, but it takes balls. I feel for you. I don't have the exact same situation - but similar - I managed to keep ds out of K an extra year and it has made all the difference in the world. I was right - "they" were wrong. I wish you and your ds only the best. Keep figthing and don't take no for an answer. Just don't. Every family I know that allowed the schools to push their child thru regrets in - fight mama! STOP writing off your DD. She'll never test 99% on anything? are you insane? Stop being so insecure and love your DD for the unique and wonderful child she is. Get here whatever help she needs and celebrate her accomplishments. You have no idea what she'll be like in 5 or 10 years. I was always 99%+++ my brother grew up in my shadow. He had some issues. Didn't go to college right away - worked at a gas station (to the horror of the community and family). My parents celebrated every C+ and supported him in his choices. He is super successful as an adult. He went to community college and came out making 80k / year (more than I did after $120k in school). LOVE HER FOR WHO SHE IS. [ Reply | More ]

Your assignment for tonight. Make a 'test' for your DD. Stuff she knows that might have been tough for her to 'get' - test her tomorrow. She'll ace it and you can celebrate it. My boys are complete opposites. This competitive world we live in over preschoolers is insane. My oldest didn't say 2 words until he went to school at 3.5. He could do 100 piece puzzles at 2. Even my father 'joked' that he was autistic (which is not something to joke about).. He's just my son. As an adult I understand this stuff much better. Do not compare - just love her and support her - that's your only job. [ Reply | More ]

Guy from my private school had to switch to public, he simply couldn't do the work. Parents had him tested, only issue was low IQ. Sweet guy, loved food, they worked with him to find areas where he could succeed and build confidence. By the end of high school he was running his own catering company. He went to culinary school instead of college and now owns a handful of upscale restaurants and is a minor celebrity with a gorgeous wife and great kids. Parents aren't wealthy, but they never gave up on him. Life is a marathon, not a sprint, and college acceptance is not the finish line. You NEVER know how it's going to turn out. [ Reply | More ]

I posted above about my brother - he works in healthcare and does very well - 2-year degree at community college +++ after. I may be 'book smart' - but my social skills are non-existant. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses - as parents - our job is simply to celebrate the strengths and help them work on the weaknesses within their abilities. Help them find their niche -- it's so not about who's 3YO can 'read' or preschool admissions. Anyone feeling pride in their 4YO's school acceptance has some pretty major issues to work on. from google... I work in the ER so I frequently face this issue with patients. I use a tourniquet (but any long strip of fabric will work). Lube up the finger then wrap the strip around the finger starting at the tip and working toward the base. Wrap it tight, but not so tight as to totally cut off the blood flow. Wait a few minutes for the fluid to be forced out of the cells then unwrap and quickly remove the ring. You may have to play with how much pressure to use. It works for my about 90% of the time. I hate to cut wedding rings and such, I do what ever I can do save them. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

Here's a trick that works every time. Slip one end of a 12" piece of dental floss between the ring and your finger - you may need to thread the floss onto a needle to work it under if you're super swollen. Wind the floss around the tip of your finger and pull the end that's under the ring taut, unwinding as you work the ring upward. Morticians use this to get rings off of swollen dead tissue without tearing it, and I've used it when I jammed my finger and should normally have had to cut the ring off but this worked. I don't what that means exactly but I would think that having more time with your SC is not a bad thing. My dc was in EI and we had a lot of therapy and all I can tell you is count your lucky stars you live in NYC (I am assuming you do- maybe you don't??). Do they really mean it or is it just a stock phrase? I'm not condoning it, I'm just curious. I have college age cousins who hang out with friends who are gay and they all say it. [ Reply | More ]

If a 5 yr old said that I'd wonder more about home, but at 13 - it's all about the peer group. Those girls may have the kindest parents in the world, they may not, but what you're hearing and seeing says more about who they are hanging out with than anything else. [ Reply | More ]

Ha - I view it like this - I think "you are so gay" has a nice ring to it when cursing/acting a fool much like "you son of a bitch"...there are some curses and phrases that just stick well even though it's not PC to say them. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Brooklyn moms- It was suggested by our pediatrician that we see a speech therapist, however our insurance doesn't cover it and our dd does not qualify for EI. She is 2.5 y/o and although she seems to understand everything, she isn't speaking very much at all. Does anyone know of a good speech therapist in Park Slope area? We are willing to pay for it, but would prefer someone that would come to our home. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Get a second opinion before you waste your money. Tons of kids (especially 1st born and dual language) don't speak until 3 - 3.5. All kids are different. My first barely said a word until 3.5 when he went to school. #2 came out babbling and hasn't shut up since. There are pros and cons to both. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with above, get a second opinion. We took 1st to speech therapist. It took him a couple of years to stop talking like her. She would teach him to say things like "dino" when he was perfectly capable of saying "dinosaur". She would say "I.WANT.the.ball.please." instead of "May I have the ball, please." For the next 2 or so years ds would continue to put the emphasis on "want" and robotically pronounce each word. So again, get a second opinion. [ Reply | More ]

If she does not qualify for EI don't do it. She will come into her own. 20 years ago it would never have come up on any Peds radar. [ Reply | More ]

We are in Park Slope and work with Lori Genna. She is absolutely fabulous and our daughter took to her immediately. Similar situation, she is understanding everything and has some single words but wasn't combining words at all. Now while working with Lori her language and word combinations are expanding. I can't say enough good things about her! Plus, she will come to your home or dd's school. Contact number is 917-903-2448. [ Reply | More ]

Ditto. Love Lori Genna! She works at NYU Medical Center-Rusk Institute and does private therapy also. She has tons of experience with kids speech therapy. She has done wonders for our ds. I sit in on his sessions at home and she teaches me what to practice with him during the rest of the week. Highly recommend her! [ Reply | More ]

While it's true that some kids come into their own, others do not. Our ds was almost 5 y/o and still very speech and language delayed. He did qualify for CPSE but the therapist they sent were just abysmal. They either didn't show up, showed up late, or seemed as if they had no clue what to do with our son. Lori has been fabulous, experience definitely shows, and we are willing to pay for it. To each his own. As I said some kids may grow into their own, but others may not and we have found that waiting was not the answer for our son. In our opinion, if there is a true issue, the earlier a professional can intervene the better. [ Reply | More ]

Totally agree- I found our CPSE therapist to be horrible. We called and asked for a new one and she was just as horrible. Although its a free service, it's as the saying goes "you get what you pay for." If you are truly worried about your son, I'd see if your insurance will pay for it and either take him to an office or try a private practioner. We decided to go private route bc of convenience at home, and our insurance reimbursed us for about 75% of it. Ask your insurance if they will remimburse you for "out-of-network" providers. We are in Carrol Gardens and also use Lori Genna. I have found her to be outstanding. We have a special needs child. I am not the type of person to right reviews or give recommendations often. But she is that good. She is so knowledgeable, so nice, and her experience at NYU has helped her really know what to do to help our daughter, as well as point us in the direction of other professionals that we needed to see to get comprehensive treatment for our daughter. She has made so many gains, we are so proud of our little girl! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Just wanted to say thanks to those who recommended I write a letter to my dcs' school asking for a SN evaluation. Wrote and faxed yesterday. Now I just have to see what they do with it. I have felt for awhile that my dc has auditory processing issues, and hopefully I am headed towards finding out some answers. Thanks UB! 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You should call and make sure that they received it and that there isn't someone else you need to send it to (our school "lost" mine the first time). Stay on top of the process since it is late in year you may not get through the process until next fall. Good Luck! [ Reply | More ]

They called me already and an evaluation is 'being scheduled'! But it was funny, they definitely tried to talk me out of doing the evaluation. If I hadn't known that I have pretty much an absolute right to it, I likely would have been dissuaded. Annoying. Also makes me wonder how certain other children of parents (recent immigrants who don't speak english as well, etc) get the help they need when the schools certainly don't help you to understand your rights. The counselor- who btw doesnt know my child from Adam so would have little idea of what his issues are- was trying to discourage me from doing it and I had to ask her point blank whether she was telling me that I *couldn't* have one. She hemmed and hawed and said she wasn't saying no, and I then had to say "well, I have asked for one in writing and I am confirming that request here on the phone. I WANT an evaluation for my dc." It stinks that the schools are like this. [ Reply | More ]
