Would like to be near a BART station in a safe, not boring neighborhood. Is <1700/1BR or <2200/2BR doable? We'd like an upgrade from the grad student lifestyle. If we can avoid having a car (at least until DCs) that would be preferable. TIA! 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Much of Berkeley itself is very nice, real houses, good public schools (cousin graduated from the local public and went to HYP, her parents are both doctors), nice restaurants and an urban-ish downtown area. Piedmont is the fancy area to live if you want a mansion w/o homeless people, public schools are supposed to be good. Oakland has changed a lot over the past 10 years, parts would be fine before kids. Orinda is the town people move to when they're specifically looking for awesome public schools - it's on the Bart but is definitely suburban and boring. [ Reply | More ]

I"ve lived in the 2 of 3 (PA and Berk.) As I'm sure you are aware, these are VERY different in type of place. Both great in certain ways - but what is great about one is so different than the other. I hated PA as a community - it is gorgeous to look at and Stanford right there is a big plus, but it wasn't for me at all. It is also crazy expensive to buy a basic little house, if you have any budget at all. But the schools are obviously very highly ranked and it offers a more serene suburban experience than most parts of Berkeley. I lived in Berkeley for many years and had my kids in public schools. Berkeley can be a little annoying in how satisfied it is with itself, but at the same time it is a really great place to live with so many wonderful opportunities of every kind - artistic, cultural, educational, etc. My kids were in the public schools and did really well. The schools are a mixed bag but they are truly diverse and many many people who could afford private choose public. My kid was actually in one of the least "desirable" schools per test scores at that time, and she had amazing teachers and got a great education. When we moved to a more suburban town in another area with very highly ranked schools she was clearly ahead of many of her classmates. [ Reply | More ]

Jobs in SF for one, flexible for the other. Budget is decent by SV standards, but definitely not limitless. We just really want to be around interesting, motivated, down to earth families...warmer weather than standard SF fare and some soul to the city/neighborhood/schools, etc. also, other working moms would be nice...I find the after school amenities are better in these communities. I grew up in Los Altos Hills and Saratoga. Trust me when I say that SF is excitement central of the Bay Area. It really is just one suburb that flows into the next. [ - ] I'm in a conundrum and would like some advice. I can't stand my sister-in-law's kid! She has an 8 year old adopted daughter that she refuses to discipline. The kid acts out quite a lot. She's unruly, disruptive, rude, she steals, lies (and I believe, is begging for discipline). For example, tonight at dinner with the family, her mother told her to finish up her dinner, and the DD turned to her mom and said "and I'm telling you to shut your face!" This is in front of a table of 5 including her 89 year old grandpa. And yet, my SIL does nothing. I let my opinions be known to my SIL, whom I adore, that she needs to discipline this child. Nothing happens. I don't want to spend any time around this kid. What should I do? 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It could make a difference if the adopted kid didn't properly attach to the mom. She could be suffering from RAD. [ Reply | More ]

Not rude, may be pertinent to understanding why SIL doesn't want to discipline the child. [ Reply | More ]

Offer to have her at your house and lovingly put down some basic rules and enforce boundaries. It will do her a world of good to have the experience and it might open SIL's eyes. Does the child behave differently when SIL is not around? Does she behave like this at school? [ Reply | More ]

How do you know she's not disciplining her away from the group? I often will wait to discipline until out of the moment with older DC - I find it far more effective. [ Reply | More ]

The most traditional elementary schools in SF are single sex: Town, Cathedral, Stuart Hall. Cathedral is affiliated w/ Grace Cathedral (Episcopal), and Stuart Hall is affiliated with the Catholic order of the Sacred Heart. Town, I believe, is 100% secular. Coed alternatives are a little more progressive (no uniforms, etc.) and include San Francisco Day, San Francisco Friends and Marin Country Day School (which, although across the GG Bridge, is quite popular in SF and they reserve half their spots in K for SF kids-- the kids take buses). Do you love living in NY? Or do you crave a suburban lifestyle and easy access to nature? That should be your first question because the lifestyle will be VERY different. Where are your friends and family? Do you need to be near them? Don't choose where to live based on the possibility of meeting someone. Don't we all meet someone when we aren't looking? I did (at 31)...and you are certainly not too old....gl! [ Reply | More ]

I grew up in NYC but met my husband in San Francisco. I have another girlfriend who left SF to move to New York to meet a guy because she swore that the "markt" in the Bay Area was impossible. When she moved she was 29, and now she's 37, but she refuses to move back home to SF until she has a husband. She's had more nibbles in NY than she ever had here in SF. This is what I would do if I were you, stay in NYC for the next 16 months but date online and cast your net far (far to SF) and say you're moving there in a year, so just looking now. You might get yourself a boyfriend before you move here, and still get the extra cash. [ Reply | More ]
