Some of the newer Duplo sets focus less on building with blocks and more on characters and imagination (see the Circus set). I don't know if this is good or bad, but it's sort of followed along the general trajectory of Lego towards less actual building with blocks. [ Reply | More ]

BTDT, in our case the father was in the picture even though not married. Another relative filled in while nanny took some maternity time. That said, you have to see how it goes. I have tried doing the right thing and it was a disaster, even with a well-loved nanny who had been with us with no issues for years. But there are happy stories. It really depends a lot on your nanny having her own reliable childcare and/or you being willing to have her bring db. If the latter, just accept the reality that her infant is going to get a disproportionate share of time and attention -- and if her child were not, I'd question her as a mother anyway. Negotiate a reduced nanny share cost. Think about what happens in her db is sick, if your dc are sick, backup care in all directions, who pays as her dc gets older and joins yours in meals and outings. All this stuff sounds minor, but can easily cause problems. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not saying she follows the other laws. How would I know. Just a warning. If nanny knows that she was fired for being pregnant, she could take legal action. [ Reply | More ]

you can fire employee for not performing their duties and as a household the rules are not the same as for a large corporation with thousands of employees. If she is not able to show up for work, what are you supposed to do? You are not a rich corporation, you need to find someone else to cover and cannot afford to pay twice. Disability benefits also don't last long enough, definitely not the duration of pg and subsequent necessary maternity leave. [ Reply | More ]

You must have never been pg if you must as this question. Of course it can, nanny's job can be pretty demanding, especially if she also has a long commute. She may have bad morning sickness, come late for work every day or not be able to come to work, she may not be able to lift the kid if you have a truly little one, who needs to be carried around if she has problems. She may need to go on bedrest earlier. For most physical jobs pregnancy is a risk and often times the woman cannot keep her job. I know for those working in an office, this is hard to understand. NP: You must not be able to read, it is the nanny's unmarried status that the OP is worried about, not her physical abilities. [ Reply | More ]

That's why I only considered nannies beyond reproductive age and with grown up kids and married, I don't need drama. [ Reply | More ]

I would wait and see how it goes, it may not be a problem, just discuss this with her and how much time she needs and if she knows anyone, who can substitute for her and if she even plans to come back to work. First of all if she is on the first trimester, you never know what happens, I guess, better to discuss this when she gets to a second trimester when you can be more sure things are happening and she is more likely to be ready with her plan. If she is not planning to come back to work, and she is not going to be able to perform her duties, if your care situation is too demanding for her condition, then consider giving her severance and letting her go. [ - ] For the past week, I was suddenly put on a very high dose of a certain medication. I'm reading all these horror stories online about the side effects people experience at lower doses than mine (mood swings, muscle weakness, rapid weight gain, insomnia), but I feel totally fine. Are some people just less affected by medication? I've taken other medication before and barely noticed a thing. I even took Tylenol PM once to knock myself out on a long flight, and I just sat up wide awake the whole time. :) 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

are you the prednisone person who posted the other day? Side effects occur in some people and do not occur in others. Consider yourself lucky and stop stressing over the fact that you are NOT experiencing any! [ Reply | More ]

ps I make a point to not read through all the side effects when I have to take medication (and stay away from google!), otherwise, I will be too scared to take it! [ Reply | More ]

np: If it's prednisone, the side effects usually come when you are weaned off--mood swings, hunger. My dcs take it for asthma and watch out! [ Reply | More ]

or: I was put on 50mg prednisone and never had any side effects. My dr dropped me to a lower dosage for the weaning period and I never experienced anything. [ Reply | More ]

What medication? I think in this example it helps to know, because some meds at larger doses even for people with higher tolerances, are unsafe [ Reply | More ]

I have never picked a final name until meeting db. They look similar, but if you wait the 48 hours, they do start showing temperamental traits, have different coloring, etc. I could not imagine naming a db before meeting them. [ Reply | More ]

I never understand what someone is looking for in their baby when they say this. Do you have an example of a name that matches a particular personality (meaning a personality that is obvious within first day or two of life). [ Reply | More ]

OR: I think it is very individual. For example, "Sophia" for me might conjure a dark-haired, calm child as opposed to "Sally" which might reflect lighter coloring and a louder, more demanding personality. My dc's temperaments were fairly consistent from infancy to teens. My most difficult child cried and had a high startle that was obvious in teh hospital. My easiest, slept better than the others, latched more easily, and was easier to comfort in the hospital. We had a group of names we liked for each, and were both easily able to eliminate most after meeting db. For others, I know the child becomes the name. For us, our connotations of the name have to fit our baby. [ Reply | More ]
