No, I don't think so. My dd wouldn't have been able to watch it at 5 either, but every kid is different. I just meant that if a 5 or 6 yo kid isn't scared, I think it's fine--I don't think there's anything inappropriate there.

Teacher here too-- I wore a dark gray skirt suit with low heels and bright pastel yellow button up shirt. Think the suit was Banana Republic and shirt J Crew. Low heels. Simple necklace no other jewelery. In the past few years I've interviewed/hired a bunch of teachers do you have any other questions about the interview? Don't leave your hair down and play with it all the time, don't show cleavage (you'd be surprised), sound like you are very interested in professional development and come prepared to answer where you have the more room to grow and where you are the most confident. Don't say bad things about test prep, even if we all think them. Be able to articulate a classroom management philosophy that is strict but kind and responsive to student needs and say NOTHING about appealing to administration or parents to solve the problems. Be able to give detailed examples of differentiation you have done. Be humble about your first year of teaching (if that is the case). Every interview committee I've sit on cares less about portfolios and such (though it makes you look organized) and more just sizing up if you look like you can hack it, because it's a much harder job than anyone ever realizes!

Op here: I am applying to mostly public high need schools but my student teaching was at schools like nest, stuyvesant and Bronx science. How should I discuss classroom discipline when I really have no experience. :( this is probably my biggest obstacle.

High needs schools honestly will hire smart well dressed professional looking teachers. I've had that job for many years and it is grueling work. And yes, classroom management will be by far your biggest challenge. Is the hiring freeze over or are you in an exempted field? The first year will make you want to quit and if you are serious about teaching you have to push past that. I cried literally every day my first year.

They are in Paris right now for Lulu's birthday. Yes I think it's wonderful they're having a baby. I don't think they are helping Nessie with normalcy. For one, they are constantly reaching a new groups of followers who will hear about the horrific crime and have their reactions to it. It makes Nessie very public and scrutinized. It decreases the potential pool of people she can interact with who don't immediately know the back story and that cannot be good for her.

Because instead of focusing on Nessie and quietly remembering Lulu while doing something Nessie centered they made the whole trip to Paris to honor Lulu. It's not healthy for Nessie. She is alive and needs her parent's energy and mind and I can't imagine she's getting as much as she needs with all this.

Do you get any "you" time? Even if you're nursing it's entirely possible. We have a pretty even system if he gets to go out alone then I do. Though I usually go get a pedicure during the day rather than go out at night when I'd rather have wine at home and watch Real housewives of NJ marathon. (hint hint)

Two guesses. 1) He's a bit of a douche and it's his attempt at making you somehow worried or jealous from the get go. 2) He's clueless as to the basic rules of polite courtship (sorry for old school term). I would still go on the date to see which of the two he is. But this would definitely go in my 'things to watch' column.

I think residency shifts are usually 20 9hr shifts/month, which sounds great, but worried they would be completely exhausting 9 hours and I'd be dead afterwards. Wondering how this compares to IM, with call q4 and 24 hour shifts...

Surgical subspecialty mom: Do a residency. The only thing sadder than being a poor resident is being one when you're older. And I graduated from Stanford in the early 2000s, it was amazing how many start up classmates came right back to clinical medicine after the crash. You may do better outside of clinical medicine but most do not, particularly if you want to work part time. I'm in a specialty and daily feel so lucky to be able to work part time compared to my MBA old roommates, who are every bit as smart but in a different field.

OP: good advice, I know. Right now the thought of going back to 80-hour weeks sounds awful. Esp with a DB in the mix. A few months of that during clerkship was miserable, and I imagine it'll be even worse as a resident.

Did you not know about doing a residency when you went into medical school? All residencies suck until you're out in private practice. EM in a teaching hospital is a good job after residency, Anesthesia is good, but many jobs still have call. What did you think you'd do when you started medical school? Most people in my class knew what they wanted to do by the time they were finishing.

i was super crazy picky, my sibs weren't much better. My mom short order cooked for the three of us. I now eat everything, esp spicy, ethnic cuisine, very thin and fit. Ditto my youngest sister. My middle sib, the least picky as a kid, is a bit overweight and doesn't have a great diet.

Mine (momwas driving the bus, really) were extremely easygoing about food. Partly because my grandmother (on my mother's side) was strict. I guess my mom wanted to be the opposite. I'm thin and stayed thin after having kids. My siblings are portly. I'm easygoing about my DCs' eating habits. Just presenting the facts...

My mom was extremely strict. I was put on diets as a child and dragged to weight watchers at 12. My whole youth was lose/gain, bc I binge ate the second I got away from my mother. I became obsese in college. After college, I lost 100lbs and got intense therapy. I'm now 40 and kept that weight off, even after ds. I won't ever restrict my my children eat.

Parents very easygoing; home cooked meals and plenty of ice cream and homemade desserts. We were all picky and more or less indulged. Now, we all eat everything and have healthy food relationships. I am thin, my brother is thin, and my sister is a little heavier (within normal BMI) but her DH is always cooking these decadent meals and she can't give up nightly wine and not interested in exercising.

Put them along on the wider side walks or along the city parks. Those wider sidewalks street do exist but putting them in front of these residential buildings is ridiculous esp.the high rises

That might work out if they wanted to have like 1/10 of the number of bikes, maybe. You realize this is still considere the pilot phase, and in Manhattan ALL of the bike stations are south of Central Park? The placement restrictions you're describing aren't feasible.

I think it will be modestly successful, but this is a pilot, if the location bothers you let them know. I bike all the time with my bike and the biggest hassle is finding a place where my bike will not be stolen - I will give these bikes a try for errands - but they are heavy - 45 lbs

LOL--my regular bike weighs that much. You wouldn't want to ride the Paris-Roubaix on one but for short hops and errands they're surprisingly manageable and easy to ride.

Each station has two long racks. They should have left some space between the racks for people to get through. Sanitation workers, people with walkers getting off at the curb, people unloading from taxis/cars, people with strollers, etc. are going to have a problem. All they needed to do was leave 6 feet of space between the racks, but the way they are set up, they are like walls. The ones that are in parking places are not a problem. They also drove our food truck row out of the neighborhood. Oh well.

I live downtown and our nearest one is in a wide alley. I don't think it blocks any building entrances.

We have two near us taking up parking places, and they seem fine. There is one the sidewalk in front of Whole Foods that could really use a gap. Loading groceries is going to be difficult for those people with cars. There are some in front of residential buildings where you wonder how the garbage men are going to get all those bags through and around the racks. And you wonder about cabs and such dropping people off who have to unload or use walkers or wheelchairs. My mother would not be able to navigate between those bikes with her walker and going the whole way around the racks would take a lot of energy for her. Luckily, my building entrance was spared, and it is just the service entrance that is blocked.

Mine doesn't either. He's a health nut. It's not like he'd divorce me if he saw me eating it, he'd just give me a hard time. But it makes me healthier, so I'm thankful. And I still sneak it sometimes.

NP--I avoided high fructose corn syrup during my pregnancy which ruled out MOST ice cream, but you can find some made with natural ingredients. Haagen Daz vanilla and some of their basic flavors are natural, as is Oberweiss (They might be local to our Chicago area). Just look at the ingredient list. Some are made with real cream, milk, sugar
