OP: Not that I know of. The location is terrible with the subway construction. Very sad. There's another great grocery store near Target in Harlem called Aldi that has amazing prices. You walk out of there with all you can carry for $20.00.

Well, let's be honest: as soon as Fairway went in and had fresher products for about the same money you could see this one coming.

They had it coming. Before Fairway, the store is filthy, crowded, and overpriced. I once saw mold on their mushroom. They remodelled / revamped a little too late. Combined with the subway, they had no chance.

OK, but that FE was catty corner from Fairway. Most people would rather the prospect of a line-up for better quality food at a lower price. Will be interesting to see what happens when Whole Foods opens on 3rd and 87th. Could be very good news price-wise for UES residents (when it rains, it pours; we had no decent grocery options at all until Fairway opened--Eli's and his crazy prices doesn't count).

I'm from Europe, it's very common there. Americans are very conscious when it comes to SIDS risks which I think is great but it's not clear whether there is a causality or just a correlation. I would not say anything, your friend's newborn will be fine.

I agree. I put my nb down like that but I check constantly. And I tuck the blanket under her armpits. As long as she doesn't flail her arms over her head she's not going to get covered up.

Different cultures have different ways. In the UK part of the bedding set is a flat sheet that you actually tuck the baby in with. Here no one would ever consider that.

Concerned about covers going over the head, at that age they can't move or have control to push it off. Bare is best. Maybe on top of the bed, no covers?

HAve your DB checked for a short frenulum (the flesh that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth can be too tight), this can be a culprit in improper latching and easily fixed by an ENT.

It is probably reflux from a forceful letdown/oversupply. Have you tried nursing lying back so you are veryreclined?

Can the forceful letdown cause reflux? I had assumed that the gassiness could be from the oversupply, but couldn't figure how the reflux came about. Even when I'm not squirting, he seems to get the reflux issue. Will try changing the nursing position (just when I thought we were starting to hit a stride with BF'ing!!).

Yes, the watery milk that is more present with an oversupply can cause reflux. Keep upright for awhile after feeding. Don't be afraid to put DB on some reflux medication. I am not a big fan of medicating but if your baby is in pain, this may help. Reflux usually clears up around 6 months so he can go off then.

The first more watery milk, the fore milk, that initially comes out makes them more gassy -- it has less calories, and is more of a thirst-quencher. Try pumping a bit first, then giving him the breast.

Many babies develop reflux at about this age. Probably just a coincidence that it happened when you went back to work. Talk to ped. There are some very safe medications that can help. Usually takes a week or so to kick in. Block feeding can help the oversupply issue (look up on kellymom.com for explanation) too.

Learn to swaddle better. Get a bigger blanket and tie her up nice and tight! This was my favorite blanket for DBs. I buy it for everyone when they have a DB: http://www.amazon.com/Hudson-Baby-Organic-Receiving-Blanket/dp/B002BSGXFA/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1360364092&sr=8-6&keywords=organic+blanket

Think about the name on a resume. If it's a name that is usually a nickname, a potential employer may overlook her because it seems too casual. Imagine if she were to be sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice?

Either is quite nice IMO. If you name her Rosie, though, give her a more traditional middle name so that she can be "R. Elizabeth Smith" on her business cards if she needs a more professional option.

Justice Rosie. Doctor Rosie. Mother Rosie (or the Rev'd Rosie), President Rosie...She might make those work, but might later appreciate the dignity of Rose, Rosemary, Rosalind, etc, etc. I don't see this as an issue with Hannah. I do have a friend who has a nickname as her first name and while most of the time she likes her name, she has admitted she wishes she had the option of a more formal, professional sounding first name. (Think Lizzie instead of Elizabeth, etc.).

OP: We still have her mother staying with us, so there is extra help in addition to myself. But she's genuinely giving it her all and not holding up well. From time to time we have a night when she can sleep through because of this, but its not enough. We do have a difficult son (he's sleeping roughly 8 hours a day which worries us, but not, apparently, the doctors).

I don't know about it being a sign of giftedness, but some people (and babies) need less sleep than others. My friend never slept as a baby and she is now a doctor. She thrives on little sleep, which makes her perfect for the medical profession

If she has a night where she can sleep through- as in, 8 hours or so- then she is way better off than most moms of 3mo olds. I'd give her a weekend at a nice hotel nearby as a treat so she can relax, use the hotel spa if she wants, and... relax. If she's been expressing any milk you can use that while she's gone.

I have been to the spa while breastfeeding. I told my massage therapist and they laid extra towels down underneath me in case I started leaking. The biggest issue is time away--will your baby take a bottle? If so, she can leave you with some pumped milk and enjoy a day out.

Nanny here: I would be fine working with a nanny cam if the parents were up front with it. I would also be ok if the parents used a nanny cam for 2 weeks to a month, just to calm their nerves. However, if I found out I was being secretly taped long term I would feel really violated. When it's just me and DC home, I frequently go to the bathroom with the door open so I can see her play. Or sometimes I shut the door, but she walks in to keep me company and doesn't close it behind her. I would not be doing this if I thought there was a camera in the room adjacent to the bathroom. Don't tell the nanny it's a nanny cam, tell her you have security cameras.

We have a camera in dc's bedroom and in the main room, which we also used as monitors before hiring a nanny, and we told all candidates about them. I didn't like the idea of one at all, but DH wasn't comfortable having no visibility into what goes on (especially in the beginning), so having a cam but disclosing it was our compromise. I think it's the way to go. Bad nannies won't take the job; good ones won't care so long as you're up front (not secretly spying); and being honest does allow you to address anything you see that may trouble you. ps our nanny even calls on rare occassion to tell us to watch ds doing something cute or notable.

I would be up front about it, and if the nanny is uncomfortable with it then she can work elsewhere, no problems. I'm on camera most of the time, and it's just something you get used to.

I am surprised this story has been so quiet. When Consumer Reports sounds a health alarm, usually there is a media reaction. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I do wonder whether Big Ag (Tyson, Monsanto, etc) was able to tamp it down. I would avoid rice cereal, or make my own cereal using imported rice. I've switched us to imported rice and we eat other grains more often (we used to eat eat brown rice 3-4x weekly, now 1-2x weekly).

that kind of pain is a clogged duct. Hot hot hot hot shower, massage. If you look at your nipple under a bright light, you may be able to see the clog. Having db nurse a LOT will help too.

Locate the clog and nurse your baby in a position where his/her chin is pointing at the clog. Works like magic. I hope it's not infected though - I can't comment on that.

Definitely sounds like it could be a clogged duct--check out http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/. Kellymom.com is a fantastic source for breastfeeding info and problems. I've had clogged ducts multiple times and mastitis three times. It was a tingling pain that sometimes shot up my arm. If I got the clog out quickly, all was fine. The mastitis sucked mightily the first 24 hours or so until the antibiotic kicked in. Try the tips on the website for undoing a clog, but if you start to run a fever or have symptoms of mastitis, get thee to the doc.

Don't babies get a lot of shots around 6 weeks? I seem to remember our ped. telling us not to go into crowds until 6 weeks. So unless you absolutely have to use public transportation, I would not do it for another few weeks. There are a lot of colds and viruses around now. Once you do start going, I think it's easier to manage buses than trains in general. I took whatever I needed to get where I was going, but took buses when I had a choice. I didn't like taking a stroller and having to haul stroller, baby, diaper bag up and down stairs; I preferred to wear db in a carrier and wear either a backback or a messenger bag instead of a diaper bag, left hands free for holding railings, bags, etc., plus nothing was falling off me. If you can sit, it's safer; you won't fall over at a short stop. I purelled after getting off any public transportation but I'm sure I'll be laughed at here for that.
