[ - ] I had 128 substantive emails I needed to substantively respond to or address in some way today - and most of them involved more than just an email response - maybe some sort of analysis, or drafting of some type of agreement. This is probably below my average. Where do other lawyers stand on the daily email count? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

How do you have time to count the emails? I SAH now but was a biglaw partner and never understood it when associates would talk about the number of emails they received. [ Reply | More ]

When you file 'substantive' emails, the files should indicate a count. You will have to tally up the counts but that doesn't take THAT much time. [ Reply | More ]

I get maybe 10-15 emails a day, of which about 5 need some type of lengthy response or analysis. Granted I do not work in BigLaw. You can read all the books in the world, but until you actually do it you have no idea. It is like the difference between climbing a mountain and reading about climbing a mountain. Your body just takes over and you do it. It just isn't an intellectual thing. [ Reply | More ]

not so much true..you would want to know how to tie a knot, what gear you would need, etc before you climb...with some much interventions happening an a lot of it not always needed it is nice to know that you do have other options, it is not about attacking your doctor it is about having a smart conversation with them, they only way you know what questions to ask is by getting info before...like know you don't need an iv if you don't have pain meds...if you did not know this before you would just get a routine i.v. which can make it harder for some people to use natural options for pain management like shower, bath, etc. [ Reply | More ]

wow - I feel bad for you. To be honest I don't really care about pissing doctors off, when it comes to my body I don't see how being able to have a conversation with my doctor and be some what on a level field is wrong. I also don't see how it is micromanaging to not go for an i.v if it is not necessary..there is not reason to have an iv if you don't have meds, if you are able to drink and keep liquids down you will stay hydrated. For many women their birth experience matters and it is not about micromanaging your doctors or nurses it is about know what they hell they are doing to you and know what your options are.. Whatever. I just don't think reading a few articles trumps medical school and years of experience. np: Yes, it is Morningside Heights, but in all honesty, since the 1960s many uninformed people referred to all of Manhattan north of 96th St with the general term "Harlem" except for maybe Washington Heights. The distinction between neighborhoods was less prevalent. For example, although the far east 80s have always been Yorkville, NO ONE used that term to refer to the area in the 1980s when I moved there. People just called the whole thing the Upper East Side. Sometimes the crap posted on this side makes me laugh. Its Manhattan, there are people of color EVERYWHERE! There are some very good schools north of 96th street, and lovely neighborhoods too, but if you and your precious snowflakes want to stay south, imagining yourselves safe in a soap bubble of whiteness, please feel free. I live in Morningside Heights. The official boundary in West 110th to W 125th from Riverside to Amsterdam. On the East side north of 96th street to 125th Street is considered East Harlem. It is primarily a Spanish nabe also called El Barrio. These are both livley areas with great restaurants and diverse folks. Been here in MH for 17 years. Paid less than 100K for gorgeous 2 BR with views. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe. If you don't care about nice shops & restaurants, and are OK with lots of unemployed underclass hanging on the streets, and ok with the drug dealing, etc., then, maybe. Harlem stalled with the crisis in 2008, but is rapidly changing again, with more and more shops/restuarants coming (to certain blocks/streets). Some beautiful streets, some decent streets, many terrible blocks - you need to know it block by block before you buy. But you can still get a fully modernized, renovated townhouse for $2.75m, only 5 mins further in a cab than your current place. We know people who've left, becuase they don't want their kids so exposed to gangs, drugs, crazies (more meth clinics and halfway houses in Harlem than anywhere else), and the general foul language shouted at each other by the underclass (that will never leave). It is NOT Cobble Hill. That said, it is convenient, nice enough, cheaper than elsewhere, and you can avoid a lot of the crap by living on one of a handful of good blocks. [ Reply | More ]

I take it you visit friends in Harlem, but don't actually live there. We do, and while some of what you say is true, much isn't. Perhaps you haven't been to Lido, 5&DIamond, Bad Horse, Vineteria, Zoma, Chez Lucienne, Corner Social, Maison, or even Harlem Tavern, but there are plenty of good and/or fun restuarants. Admittedly the retail is still weak with not much but a few small but cute boutiques and the craziness of 125th street. THe area that op is interested in is where we live and is super gentrified (we were white pioneers when we bought in 2005). I think the biggest culture shock from downtown is that there are a lot of black and brown people and they hang out outside a lot. Outside of bodegas and corner delis, the scaffolding atop the eastbound 116th stop of the B/C train is a particular hang out spot. THey aren't bums, just people hanging out and talking sh*t to each other, and yes they do speak to each loudly and full of curses like its no big deal. But they are friendly and will help you carry your stroller up/down the subway steps! Oh and otehr than ps180, the schools suck. [ Reply | More ]

Nope. Have lived here for 6 years. There is no retail (unless you count Old Navy and dollar stores) - 1 or 2 nice shops in 75 square blocks doesn't count. As for restaurants, yes, FDB has a handful of "good neighborhood places", but again, 6 restaurants in a 75 is close to nothing. Most of the best ones mentioned are new in the last 2 years - hence the rapid current change comment above. The respondent above likely lives on/close to FDB, which is the most UWS like of the micro-hoods. It falls off very rapidly from there... Literally, walk one block over and it can feel radically different (e.g., 120 and ACP vs 120 and Lennox) [ Reply | More ]

It's new. It exists precisely so you don't have to be a gymnast. I had dd there in 2005. Dr Leonard. I was in beautiful delivery room with views of the river and big flat screen tv for 36 hrs but dd wouldn't descend. Ended up with C Section and shitty private room with really uncomfortable bed. Epidural came as soon as I requested it, no issues there. I think the birthplan thing is really for you and just causes a PITA for the hospital so I get that. Also, 99% of the time, it's not implementable - no way to know what is going to happen with labor and better to leave it up to the DR. GL! [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, I'm not majorly into birth plans, but just generally have a few requests (don't want pitocin, want an epidural, etc.) and saying "we don't accept birth plans" made me a little nervous. Interesting that the bed was uncomfortable, I haven't heard that before! Especially considering the private rooms cost $750/night now, the bed should be comfortable! A squatting bar, btw, is a bar you use to hold on to so you can squat while pushing or laboring (instead of laying on your back). Reduces tearing and reduces pain (although I guess with an epidural that doesn't really matter much?). Anyway I have begged my OB to make an exception and give me general/twilight anesthesia so I can be knocked out and woken up with a baby, but she said they stopped doing that 30 years ago (I was born that way). :) So an epidural will have to do. Good to know epidural came fast! I've heard horror stories of people waiting 2-3 hours for them. Also, has anyone ever requested epidural during contraction (at Cornell) so you feel the epidural less? Want as many anecdotes as possible! First baby and freaking out a bit... [ Reply | More ]

I labored at home until I was 4-5 cm, and had an epidural about 1 hour after arriving. I was open to nonmedicated birth but my labor was intense from the beginning (lots of vomiting and diarrhea) and I arrived at the hospital in pretty bad shape. I think the key components for a birth plan are (1) how long do you want to labor at home (2) do you want an epidural, and around when and (3) what other pain management approaches do you want to try (e.g., laboring in the bath (if your water hasn't broken), squatting bars, alternative positions, whatever [ Reply | More ]

^^FWIW, I think it's a little odd that your ob has a blanket no birth plan policy, but hopefully it just means taht they don't want you to arrive with a script and drive them nuts. I delivered with a midwife and didn't have a birth plan, just an overall approach that fit in with her philosophy--as little intervention as possible. I liked kind of just going with the flow, especially for my first. I have stronger opinions as I gear up for my second, but still don't expect to bring a birth plan--though I might have a plan between me and my dh [ Reply | More ]

IDK this hospital but I think it's an awful sign that he said they "don't accept birth plans." It would have been fine to say, "We will try to respect your birth plan but if there are any medical complications, it might not happen." But not even accepting them ... that's not good. [ Reply | More ]

Can you use a squatting bar if you've had an epi? I don't think so. [ Reply | More ]

I have a friend who used one with her husband and a nurse helping to hold her up. Because the baby wasn't moving and they wanted to try a different position. Also, I have friends who used them before getting the epidural, but not for pushing. [ Reply | More ]

You can still express your wishes without having a written thing presented to the doctor. I've never had a written plan, but I've had the births I wanted. [ Reply | More ]

I think if you get an epidural, you're stuck on your back. That's always been the case for me. Squatting bars, or any alternative positions, would only be available for people not getting an epidural. [ Reply | More ]

Actually on the topic of alternative positions- anyone deliver at Cornell and push while sitting up straight at the edge of the table? I've been told that is a good alternative to being on your back, and some hospitals are okay with raising the bed back straight up and having you sit at the very edge so you're not lying down... any Cornell experiences with this? You guys are helpful, thanks so much! [ Reply | More ]

Hmmm, good suggestion! I'm not delivering at Cornell but I'll definitely have to remember this one. My doctor wanted me on my back last time, but I wonder if this might be an option for me. [ Reply | More ]

I've been told it's a good alternative to squatting if you've had an epi and can't squat for obvious reasons. And it uses gravity a bit more and supposedly helps the baby along. I'm going to request it (where request = yell and scream until they say okay) [ Reply | More ]

I delivered there in 2004 and 2008 but the latter was a scheduled C. if you insist on an attending for your epi or if L&D is really busy, you may have to wait for the epi or in the event of a long labor for the top off on the epi. sometimes they run out of pumps. there was no mention of squatting bars back then, but may have since changed. if you get an epi, a lot of doulas recommend side lying as an alternative position. you really DO want to take all pressure off your tail bone so that your pelvic opening has the ability to expand as much as possible to get the baby out. Somehting I wish I'd known in 2004! [ Reply | More ]

Good to know about side lying! I haven't really heard of that. You did that at Cornell? Does it help prevent tearing? This might sound stupid but where do your legs/feet go and how do you push if you're lying on your side?? You may be right about requesting an attending and having to wait for the epi. I guess not waiting and letting a resident do it is probably better. [ Reply | More ]

or: i did not do side lying bc i didn't know any better, but i might have avoided needing a C-seciton in the end had i done that. knowing what i know now, i'd get a doula and learn more about L&D. I figured I didn't need to know much since I was planning on an epi, but that's just not the case. and many doulas are not super crunchy - they'll work in Cornell or w a mom who wants an epi. OP, if you want an epidural, you probably won't be able to and/or be allowed to squat. Check with your OB. [ Reply | More ]

A true classic six is living room, dining room, library, two bedrooms, and maid's room. (These days the library is gone and the kitchen is counted as the sixth room, or the wall between library and LR has been demolished.) A true classic seven is LR, DR, library, three bedrooms and maid's room. [ Reply | More ]

Then you've seen renovated ones. Most people now collapse the wall between LR and library to give more space and openness, but trust me: if you look at the old floor plans, such as the ones online or at NYPL, they all have libraries. The large apartments at 15 Central Park West have separate libraries off the living room . Robert A. M. Stern designed those in homage to the old prewars, where each room flowed into another but was separate. [ Reply | More ]

No library in a Classic 7. And 3 baths - 2 'proper' baths, and the maids bath. No half-bath in a 6 or a 7. You need larger apts for this, or perhaps some of the grandest buildings. [ Reply | More ]
