[ - ] Anyone have any good recommendations for an airport car service w/ car seat option that is INEXPENSIVE? (Ie less than $100)? From UWS to JFK. I know that Kid Car service is pretty pricey. Just called Dial 7--they make you reserve an SUV for $135+. Just looking for a reasonable rate, if any exists. Thanks a million, everybody. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My wife will be home with our 1 month old, and we were looking to find a half day program for our 3.5 year old (either daycare or preschool). [ - ] Baby-sitter Pay Question. I know about Park Slope survey, but they give some broad ranges. First, for regular after-school long-term sitter - one well behaved DC, hours 2-7pm, paid 2 wk vacation and unlimited sick or "family matter" days (she never abuses this, but it is still nice and does cost me extra a handful of times a year to cover her going, for example, to see her grand kids piano recital). As DC got older she started doing laundry, taking out garbage and even cooking dinner for us (3 people). How much on hourly basis? How much to pay a sitter to come at 7pm and stay over and drop off at school by 840am? DH and I both have overlapping business trips. I understand $20/hr for p/t and $15/hr for over-night, except rate drops to $10/hr for hours overnight when DC is asleep? This is NYC 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We pay a flat overnight fee and we agreed on it upon hiring our nanny. She is ft and works a 10 hour day. We only pay $60 for overnights and she seems happy to make extra $. Kids sleep throug the night if they got sick or something I would pay extra but it hasn't happened so far [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Thanks for replies. The overnight sitter is different from the regular one although we know them both so long and well. It sounds like paying regular p/t sitter $20 hr for after-school is about right. It sounds like sleepover sitter is about right at $15/hr (for hours before/after sleeping hours) plus $100 flat for sleeping over. Our PT nanny does more than overnight sitter - like laundry so that's why different rate. Seems like there is such a big range people pay - some pay only $12/hr and some have 3 DCs and still pay only $15/hr. I think our sitters want more than we pay but this tells me we are about right. Thanks all!! [ Reply | More ]

I've done a few red-eyes and basically even if the kid slept, I didn't, and since my kids usually sleep 11 hours or so at night, a 5-6hour flight, even if they sleep for all of it, is only half their usual sleep. Planes are a novelty for most kids, so they are unlikely to sleep for at least 3 hours into the flight. Go for the morning flight. If kids dont sleep, you are during your own waking hours and its ok, you can handle it. If they dont sleep and its during your night, you will be miserable trying to entertain them and they will be inherently crankier. [ Reply | More ]

I would probably do the 10PM flight because the baby would be in a better mood and so he would probably go to sleep right when you settle in. With the early flight, you have to wake DB up at 4 or whenever, and he'll be in a bad mood for the flight. [ Reply | More ]

Don't feel resentful. You have always been happy to help so they don't realize things have changed. You may find the less you do for them the less contact you will have with them. People will take advantage if they can and so far you have happily let them. No need for you to feel bad just set new boundaries that you are happy with and don't expect other people to be as helpful as you are. You can only change your own behavior. GL [ Reply | More ]

YES! I'm usually good with shows, but had the hardest time following all these twists. (SPOILER ALERT). So Charlie was working for Cyrus, and tried to kill that Billy-guy on behalf of Cyrus. But instead, Billy convinced Charley to let him go, and then Charley was also working for Billy? (or not?) And then Billy was the mole all along, even when he was working for the vice president (but why??) And then that David Ross character (the former DA, not sure if David is his name) decided to steal the Defiance card in order to implicate Billy as the mole? But how did David Ross know Billy was the mole? Also, I can't remember why Billy killed that woman and framed David Ross to begin with. Finally, Olivia pope's dad! Really? And he ordered Jake to sleep with his own daughter, and then to have her kidnapped/killed? Why didn't he just call and invite her for a chat? Bizarro. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Hi, I'm new in NYC and I looked at the previous posts to understand. It was very useful, but I still would like to ask you about Nannies' salary. I'm looking foa p/t nanny (23-25hrs/week), Manhattan, M through Th, from 9:30 to 3:30. 1 baby girl (6 months) and I would ask her just to take care of baby's stuff (everything about the baby, like laundry, food, toys etc). How much should I pay her? I would like pay by week, but hrs rates would be the same if she prefers, I don't care in book or out of book. thank you guys for your help and experience (I still fell a new mom and UB is super useful) 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

$15-$20 is the range for a nanny. part time is typically more $$$ than full time. if you're looking for a college educated american, you'll be $20-$25. gross it up by 30% for on the books. all of these numbers are take home to the individual. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks, this is always what people told me, but... When I make the count about how much nannies are really paid by week (through internet's blog) it looks that it starts 13 to 14/15, and it would be even good!!! I have a friend who told me the same, but when I asked her how much she pays for her p/t nanny, she said 15... Reliable person with 10 years experience... She said because she gave her a favour... But... Come on! She found her by care.com... a favour? It looks that is all about ask more for obtaining the right payment I mean, it's understanble, $20! I have a PhD and I don't have a salary much higher than this [ Reply | More ]

It's extremely rare that anyone gets $20/hr starting salary unless it's some very special situation. People on UB love to inflate nanny prices. [ Reply | More ]

Eh. Not really. My ds wanted to take Mandarin when he got to HS. He wasn't even a great student in middle school, and I remember DH and I looking at each other and thinking, this will not go well. I also remember going to parents' night and seeing the teacher show us what the 1st year chinese students could be doing by the end of the year. I was still skeptical. Guess what. I never even knew this was a thing. Ds has a "pictographic" memory and he has had straight A's in Chinese for three years. He loves it. He just somehow looks at these things that look to me like bird scratch, and he "sees" them like Rain Man. He's in the language honor society and we've now had several exchange students, but all happened in 9th grade. [ Reply | More ]

I really was only responding to the language thing but have no idea. I think he just enjoys it, wants to pursue it, possibly in college, and it was something that came entirely out of the blue. We weren't weird people trying to get him into something when he was young. I actually have had some similar feelings about some families we know who send their kids at 4, 5 etc. to Chinese classes. It could take, but maybe not. [ Reply | More ]

Really, just take the language you want. Everyone used to talk about Spanish, but now that doesn't seem nearly as important. At age 10, 14 or even 18 you have no idea what you are going to do with the language anyway and learning one you like trains your brain to learn languages. [ Reply | More ]

Makes you retain water. Try Rodial skinny beach sticks you mix with water and drink twice a day. They help with bloat and water retention. You can get them at Space NK. Other than that get a spray tan which makes everyone look better and enjoy your vacation. Also if your suit doesn't fit go get a Norma Kamali one piece and you'll feel like a sexy old movie star on the beach! [ Reply | More ]

They don't know that you didn't purposely buy the car somewhere else just to avoid the NYC sales tax. If you've owned it for 10 years, maybe different story if you can prove you paid sales tax somewhere else, then you just do something on your taxes next year to get a credit against what you had to pay (an accountant would know). Only other thing is if NYC has it in their regulations that they will charge sales tax on any vehicle brought into the city no matter what the vehicle's history. I would believe that just based on the fact that the city is choking with vehicles and can do what they want. [ Reply | More ]

Do you have a record of what the sales tax you paid in your home state? They will deduct the rate you paid there from the presumably higher rate in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

This is not exclusive to NY. When registering a vehicle most states request proof that sales tax was paid at purchase (see your bill of sale). If so, then you will likely not pay this a second time in your new state, or it will be adjusted to reflect your previous sales tax payment. If not, you will assessed sales or use tax.
