I think DH found it through streateasy or something. He ended up locating the realestate lister directly, so we didn't pay any fee. (I think the family who owned the place payed their agent).

Bloomberg does not get credit for murder rate down in NYC. Or Giuliani. Its down everywhere. And I agree- the past 2 decades NYC has become a city for the super wealthy and its so depressing. I grew up here and it feels like home, but I will never be able to make a life here for my family.

Bloomberg is a billionaire, and therefore many people kiss his ass and / or fear him. This is the problem. And this is why there's good press. He's NOT a good manager. He sucks. The city is worse. Except for the bike lanes.

this is so true. Many people kiss his ass b/c they are afraid of losing money if they are on his shit list. I know someone who is the executive director of a small museum and she can't say publicly anything against his admin at all or else she knows her funding will be radically cut. He's very punitive about people who disagree with him and that seems like a BAD manager to me, unwilling to hear criticism or disagreement.

I was initially intrigued, as there is a rack right outside our building, and right next to my office downtown. But DH tells me that its on the price-side-- so don't really see an advantage over taking a cab/bus. DH thinks its for tourists.

If you go beyond 45 minutes per ride, yes. But how often will most people do that, realistically? And you can also stop at any Citibike rack to return the bike then immediately check it out again to avoid the overcharge, if you're really determined to avoid the extra fee.

OP. I don't plan to use it. It is expensive enough to discourage me from recreation and I don't commute anymore, but my commute was only about 10 blocks when I did it. I don't understand why they don't leave a wide gap between the two racks when they install them. People have to walk a long way around, and the point about ambulances and such is a good one. Garbage pickup is going to be an issue too. There is so little sidewalk access from the street.

The first 30 minutes are free, which is great and similar to Paris' Velib, but the price after 30 minutes is outrageous ($4 for second half-hour and $9 for the half hour after that.) In Paris if the bike dock you want to return your bike to is full, you can get a free extra 15 minutes to find another dock. I don't see that option with Citibike.

And? That's sort of the nature of being a tourist. When I sublet an apartment in Paris I didn't complain that my per night cost was more than the per night cost to the apartment's real tenant, who rents it on a monthly basis. Nor did I complain about the cost of a single entry to the Louvre, even though I know people who live in Paris get a better deal in the long run with their annual memberships. That's just how these things work.

DH is planning to use it for commuting. There's a rack right outside our building and another at his office. It should be about 20-25 minutes each way and will be a huge money saver over taxis, which is how dh usually gets to work. his office is in Tribeca and there's no decent public transport option for him, and the walk is long enough that it's inconvenient most mornings.

I own a great bike so I won't be using it. I agree with what they're trying to do environmentally and all, but imagine it will be a pita for residents and motorists. People who don't ride bikes regularly and are familiar with NYC traffic and roads have no place on the road. They cause traffic, delays, take up space and are a nuisance to other cyclists. I've also seen a Citibike bicycle...not what I consider a bike worth riding. Plus the prices are ridiculous.

If you want safety, do all you can to reduce the number of automobiles in the city. A bike can't realistically kill someone, but a car sure can. And car drivers aren't in any danger *themselves* around bikes and pedestrians, unlike cyclists who will be thrown off the bike.

np: The only documented case I have ever seen of someone who was not cycling and whose death was attributed to a cyclist was a very elderly man who was run into by a delivery person and died of a heart attack. (This is not to minimize the serious injuries people have suffered by being knocked down by cyclists!)

nnp. I don't know about NYC, but a few pedestrians here in SF were killed by cyclists last year. It happens. It does seem like the elderly are more vulnerable. Not because they're having heart attacks, but they tend to be frailer obviously. I'm dreading the day when some cyclist hits a stroller and kills someone's baby. It's going to happen and the shitstorm will be epic.

The big problem with cyclists is that they don't obey the traffic laws. They think stop lights don't apply to them. Many are quite arrogant about it. If they behaved like cars, they wouldn't make pedestrians so nervous. I've known more people who have been hit by bikes in the city than cars. Sure, they didn't die, but one was in a coma for 4 days.

np. I haven't ridden a bike in years, and I wouldn't want to ride one in the city, ever, but let's not pin all the blame on the cyclists. Have you paid any attention to how pedestrians behave? Everyone jaywalks. They cross against the lights, they cross in the middle of the block, they're plugged in to their iPhones listening to music and posting on Instagram while in the middle of the street--you name it. I've seen pedestrians cause accidents or near accidents more often than I've seen the opposite. Which isn't to say cyclists are all great, but in general pedestrians are much worse and there are way more of them.

I know when we were talking about having an only, people told me I was being selfish and that it was unfair to my dc not to get a sibling. Not sure if that was more annoying or all the people who tell me that it's unfair of me to make my 2 boys share a room!

You have to ignore anyone who even thinks that having 1 DC (whether by choice or not) is selfish. Ignore as in REALLY ignore -- don't give it a second thought, treat it like a kid's tantrum and let them yack away while you mentally compose your grocery list. Then shut it down with some, "well, we've chosen different paths, and I think we'll just have to leave it that way." Don't talk to this person about personal matters any more.

> Oh, and I'm an adoptive mom, and we hate people like her. Adoption is not some selfless, altruistic thing you do to show how open-minded or giving or generous you are. You do it because that's how you want to form your family, and it works in some circumstances and not others. She knows jackshit about adoption.

the thing is that...sometimes I see things that I could have posted myself. Various explanations: 1. people sometimes post things they have heard from acquaintances (who knows the f why) as though they are the person it happened to or 2. a lot of experiences/attitudes/sayings/relationships are more universal that narcissistic humans, such as we all are, want to believe.

Look up the rental managers on nybits.com. Look for their web-sites and check there. Ditto Eberhart Brothers, they have a daily e-mail with vacancies.

I believe Archstone has a building in HK, check out TF Cornerstone, Glenwood and Related Rentals. There is a building called the Helena on the far west side, The Ellington is on 8th Ave. If you do Craigslist, just keep reading the ads for a few days. Then you will be able to spot the few real listings and weed out the shady stupid bait & switch postings. Brokers post even under "by owner" so always ask if this is a broker and if there is any commission.

Another ? from OP - If we use a broker, what is standard fee. I was quoted 15% of 1st years rent (north of 7K). Is this typical? Are you able to negotiate down?

I'm not sure what you're talking about exactly, but I have noticed that UBers very quickly personalize posts about childbirth. For example, there are statistically many unnecessary C-sections in the US. I think that would be an interesting thing to talk about, that a lot of women would be pissed that doctors take decisions out of our hands for non-medical reasons. In other words, I think that conversation could unite us, it could be about female solidarity, about us women supporting each other. But posters here assume you are saying THEIR C-section was unnecessary if you even bring it up. I have no idea if YOURS was necessary. Let's just say it was. We still have a huge problem in the US, in doctors' attitudes towards healthy, uncomplicated childbirths, and we can ask together that it be addressed.

OP - I posted a few days ago asking people where they took childbirth prep classes. I thought this is a pretty straight forward post. I got so many responses like "only idiots take classes" and when I tried to explain saying I was not out to question my doctor just be informed as to what my options are...boy people just either laughed, like "honey you will not even care" or "you think you read a couple of books and now you are an expert" it blew me away how many women could care less about what is happening to their body? regardless of choice about pain meds, I believe that all women we should support them, some epidural is wonderful, some birth centers are great and for yes some csection is the best option, why judge, why not support, birth is an experiece, amazing, scary, transformative, no matter which way you go. I just was floored by the responses,...so sad

I get what you are talking about. Moms/ grandparents watching the kids are interacting, playing with, talking to, and talking about the kids they are with. It is hard for me to watch nannies completely ignore, disregard, and not acknowledge the kids they are watching. Huge divide in how the kids are treated. It's not fair for them. Some of my friends have nannies, and at school pickup it just bothers me how those kids are treated as opposed to the parents/ grandparents pickings them up. For god sake , the kid is 2 yo, can you at least pretend to be happy to see this kid?! Don't you think the child is going to notice how happy the other parents are picking their kids up?! Bothers me to no end.

Nannies are all kindly and wise. Didn't you know that? I can't count the number of times some kid gets hurt, screaming, and the good nannies and the moms on the playground just run around looking for the caregiver - who is yapping away or on her phone. saw a baby fall on his face once, crying hysterically, nanny refused to pick him up saying "He'll get smart" (he was about 15 months old maybe? I'm sure her employer was agonizing over the nanny's end of year bonus...

I don't understand how parents hire nannies who are older and/or very overweight. There is no way they are physically capable of chasing around a toddler for 8, 10 hours a day. How do the parents not realize this??

Sorry, but it certainly can be. There's "old money" in every town - East Chop and Hart Haven in Oak Bluffs, West Chop in Vineyard Haven, parts of Edgartown and parts of all the up-island towns. MC areas in all too, which is why I love it.

np- Well, now I'm flattered. Our summer house is on East Chop. I never viewed it as "old money" (always thought Edgartown and West Chop were)

Yes, it is. There's lots of new money that has come in as well (centered in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs), like any summer community on the eastern seaboard has had to deal with, but the core is still very old money.

Not so...Edgartown has homes in town that have been in the same families for generations as does Music St, in West Tisbury and the harbor homes along Main St. in Vineyard Haven.

I'm up here now, 2 days alone before the long weekend. You are so incorrect. Some crummy parts of each town and some lovely areas. Lots of mc, for year round and summer. Some of the biggest monied families have the most unpretentious homes. It's the way it is in most of MV.

You never go swimming in the water there anyway. It's always to cold. It's not really a monthly place to go. You are either there for the whole summer or you are up occasionally for long weekends if that is all your job will allow.

Op, I don't mean to be rude. Truly. If you need to ask these types of questions you really shouldn't go to these places. There are plenty of wonderful summer communities that would be gracious and warm and would love to have you and your family. But it is clear already from what little I know of you, that the places listed above would not welcome you. It's not worth it. FInd your own place that you and your family love!

Washington CT has lots and lots of new money, NYC transplants, NYC weekenders, etc. My family's been going there since the 60s and there's nothing old money about it anymore.

My WASP friend spent a weekend on Fishers Island and came back totally freaked out about how preppy and old money it was. I just remember her spluttering about lacoste shirts with the collars turned up, like a parody of 80s preppiness. Sounds like the wasps there were straight out of central casting.

So so true. I too am a WASP who grew up summering in one of the above mentioned locations and I also was freaked out by the Fisher's crowd. I went to a debaucherous weekend-long house party there and I have never met so many louche trust funders. Several of them were post-college men who did not work and were spending the summer doing things like "watching the olympics" or sailing.

If you have money for a summer home but don't know where the "old money" summers then you are not "old money" and won't fit in. You will be exposed and snubbed. If you are trying to ask where you should go that is pretty and low-key then that is a different question and many wonderful spots have been listed by the other posters.

If they are really old money like WASPY it will be somewhere kind of crappy that is only cool because they think it is. Lots of these remote places sort of suck and lack the tacky creature comforts that the "new" money is fine with. e.g. Sconset on Nantucket is pretty, but really effing far away from other things on the island. Maine is WAY too cold and frankly all of these places are on the Atlantic with its cold water and never ending surf. I would take a tacky Beyonce yacht in crystal blue warm water any day over popped collar trust funders hanging out in remote beaches eating bland food.

Lol...separation camp is usually a playgroup for 2 year olds where leaving them is optional. So basically everyone practices leaving their kids but really the moms/nannies are all waiting outside looking through windows to make sure the kid is doing ok. It's like practice for pre-school when you really do have to leave them. Kidville and several other places do it and they do gym, art, music etc for about 2 hours.

When you file 'substantive' emails, the files should indicate a count. You will have to tally up the counts but that doesn't take THAT much time.

You can read all the books in the world, but until you actually do it you have no idea. It is like the difference between climbing a mountain and reading about climbing a mountain. Your body just takes over and you do it. It just isn't an intellectual thing.

not so much true..you would want to know how to tie a knot, what gear you would need, etc before you climb...with some much interventions happening an a lot of it not always needed it is nice to know that you do have other options, it is not about attacking your doctor it is about having a smart conversation with them, they only way you know what questions to ask is by getting info before...like know you don't need an iv if you don't have pain meds...if you did not know this before you would just get a routine i.v. which can make it harder for some people to use natural options for pain management like shower, bath, etc.

wow - I feel bad for you. To be honest I don't really care about pissing doctors off, when it comes to my body I don't see how being able to have a conversation with my doctor and be some what on a level field is wrong. I also don't see how it is micromanaging to not go for an i.v if it is not necessary..there is not reason to have an iv if you don't have meds, if you are able to drink and keep liquids down you will stay hydrated. For many women their birth experience matters and it is not about micromanaging your doctors or nurses it is about know what they hell they are doing to you and know what your options are..

Whatever. I just don't think reading a few articles trumps medical school and years of experience. I found this whole idea of dr's being really pushy during birth to be completely untrue and you could always get a midwife. Trust me, mid contraction you are not going to be thinking about iv's or anything else.

true and not true. you can have a heplock which is not connected to anything, it allows for more freedom of movement...and in an emergency if needed they can get a line in...what do you think they do when people get into car accidents or have heart attacks..they start lines when needed.

Yes, but most babies are not breech (and some breech babies are born vaginally). In other words, most women are going to have a vaginal birth and could benefit from learning about the process beforehand. Classes can't stop medical problems that come up, but they can be really useful if there are no such problems. I know that my births wouldn't have gone as well if I hadn't took classes and learned about birth beforehand.

We don't drive kids up they take a bus. on the positive side for the youngest camper their trunks are unpacked and bed made when they arrive and they get them right out playing to help avoid kids getting homesick.

Wow. That isn't camp to me at all. We made our own beds and our parents dropped us off. Sounds like a hotel.

it definitely looks and feels like camp,a very nice camp with awesome facilities but still camp. Most importantly no electronics which will be this generations definition of the camp - unplugged for 7 weeks!

I just posted this on another thread...Fairy Tales Shampoo. It REALLY works at preventing getting head lice in the first place! http://www.drugstore.com/fairy-tales-rosemary-repel-shampoo/qxp227520?catid=183491

Is it true that once DC gets lice that they are more prone to getting it again?

No. My DC got lice once. That was 3 years ago. I have used the Fairy Tales Shampoo and Detangler (Spray Conditioner) on both my kids since then and thank goodness neither has gotten lice since.

That's silly, unless you never got all the lice to begin with.

you send them to camp with Fairy Tale or use it before camp. They do a lice check of every kid once they arrive.

That depends on the camp. Ask them- do they hike?

np - maybe this isn't UBesque but my kid doesn't have Hunter boots or Timberland boots or any other such footwear. I just send with sneakers until age 12/13- at that point they are usually doing more serious hiking and have hiking boots.

Put each bottle of liquor inside several socks, or they will clink together and make a mess.

sorry. friend is going through a nasty divorce and for the past year has complained non stop that DH wont pay for x and a monthly amount lower than she feels is fair in light of his finance salary. She does not work (and because of $ she inherited was not working when she met him). After the legal fees and the amount they settled on, she is very angry because it is not enough and she is going to have begin working to maintain the lifestyle she is accustomed to. Reading the 67K thread, I am realizing that she was counting the "child support" as "her support".

candy- the "popular" kids bring some candy and hide it in their bags (plus they will think "i have such a cool mom!"), stuffed animal if DC is young, headlamp (better than flashlight for camp), water balloons (though some camps prohibit), baseball mitt, stamped & addressed envelopes (or you'll never get any), shirts of all different colors (for various games), a fun costume piece (animal hat/superhero/whatever DS is into). signed, ex director of sleepaway camp :)
