Over the last several years many high-scoring girls have been admitted to Hewitt. The parents I know with DD there are very happy.

If your child already got into a good school seems like you're all set. City-wide G&T is such a long shot. ALthough you could just apply and if you get into G&T make your decision then. Last day to apply for G&T is 5/10.

Seems like the day to bash Hewitt. If this post is real, OP should take another tour of both schools. Then she should stand in front of them at dismissal and see if she likes what she sees and hears.

I hear it's a really lovely school. Don't listen to the naysayers. Most people have no idea how competitive and hard it is to get a kid in K these days.

The girls at Hewitt are wonderful and so is the school. Don't even blink for a second. It's a great decision. If you have concerns, ask Kelly Pierre to peruse the blog. It will give you SO MUCH insight into what is actually happening at the school.

I don't know all that much about either, but the people I know on the Dobbs Ferry/Hastigns line seem to be much more laidback, creative, interesting than those that I know from Westchester. I'm generalizing majorly, but if I were to hit the burbs, I would look at Dobbs Ferry/Hastings... and probably Montclair and Maplewood.

I live there now and love it. Hate Christie, but all else good. Have met good friends there, plenty of liberals (and some smart conservatives, which has been good for opening my mind a crack). Schools are really good. Nice outdoor pool, you can walk to restaurants, train, movies, etc. has been a good move for us.

Livingston is nice but no train (bus or drive to another town's station). In NJ you get a lot more house for your money and taxes aren't that different. The Westchester towns you mentioned have more character & history, but Summit & Chatham probably have better schools (esp Summit).

Normally I'd say index funds, maybe with some exposure internationally, but the world is so messed up right now that there's no sure thing. CDs are earning practically nothing. The markets are uncertain. Emerging markets might be overblown (China's growth is poised to slow down). You could do worse than to keep a lot of your money in a savings account that earns a bit of interest. I assume your 401K is in the US market.

^^full disclosure: I'm fairly exposed to the US and international markets, but I also have about $70K in cash. I keep reading doomsday predictions about the US markets, but I don't know what to do with that money if I cash out... I don't think you should feel bad about not being savvy in this area. Even the experts don't know what to do right now; they're all disagreeing with each other.

Ask people for referrals and then go meet with each of them. A financial advisor is a very personal thing - like a lawyer and in some ways like a therapist in that you will share with them details of your life that no one else knows and they really need to be a good fit. Fit is not determined by whether they made other clients a lot of money, but by whether they listen to you, understand where you're coming from and where you want to go, and what you can and can't handle along the way. IMO, when you find the right person, you'll know. When in doubt, it's definitely not the right person, no matter how much someone else loves them.

Ok. I can't give you any advice, as I don't know your income, risk tolerance, need for the cash, etc. but here is some tried and tested generic advice to get you going. 1. Have 6 months living expenses in cash/CDs just in case. 2. Ay financial advisor who doesn't charge you a fee is going to try and sell you stuff you likely don't want. 3. Fees are everything for your retirement funds. You can't predict the market, but if a fund charges you 1% a year, in 20 years they will have taken 20% of Your Money. 4. No one beats the market consistently. At least, not in a way you can benefit from. So, look for low fee index funds and own the market. 5. Invest for the long term. Buy, hold, and rebalance. 6. Your asset allocation (% of stocks/bonds) is all important. Age in bonds is a good start. 7. Learn something about this stuff. It among the most important learning of your life, but for some dumb reason we don't teach it in school. Start with The Bogleheads Guide to Investing. Good luck!

OP- thanks! I consider myself a long term investor. I have no debt - aggressively paid off all of my school loans when I got out of school. Lived very cheaply (with roommates, etc) until I could afford to really live on my own. Re #3 - I watched a special on Frontline last week which got me thinking about all of this. I am changing some investments in my 401k and rollover because of it. Thanks for the book rec--I will check out the book!

Your scenario mirrors mine to the T (age, and $ figures) 3 years ago. Now, I am 41 and so, so happy with my FEE based Financial Advisor. She is a savvy 36 year old woman (I really appreciate going to a woman). She listens extensively to our goals (3 year, 5 year) and comes up with scenarios (e.g., school options for DS aged 3, investment options, refinancing scenarios). I get written plans and we review and strategize., She also advises very specifically on investing, risk tolerance, reigning in fees where possible. We own a couple of businesses and deal with a lot of professionals - our advisor is the best move we ever made.

I picked a dive bar I love with an outside area and just invited about 20 friends to meet me there for late afternoon drinks on a sunny Sunday. It was great. I was a September birthday. So most of the crazy over the top birthday weekends for all my same age friends had been going on all year and everyone was kind of sick of them. Also, I didn't feel right asking anyone to spend travel money on my birthday. But I also don't really care about birthdays much and kind of just felt like I had to do a little something, however small. I like the idea of a spa day.

OP: thanks - I love the dive bar idea! Yes, don't want to ask friends to travel or anything like that. And feel the same way about birthdays - just don't care much. I'd much rather travel with my family and spend the money there. Thanks. Maybe I'll see if best friend can take the day off and join me.

op, please do not do atkins. There is NO way that is healthy for you, especially working f/t with 3 kids. If you follow any diet fashion, follow a low fat, vegan heavy diet. (Meat/fish/dairy okay, but most of your plate vegetables, fruits, whole grains). Can you walk to work at all? Or can you get off the subway a stop early and walk 20 blocks one way? If you do that briskly that might just be enough 5x a week for SOME activity. Can you possible schedule in one day a week at the gym? One weekend session all about YOU for 2 hours? Not sure what's feasible for you re your income and child care and hours at work...if you have a gym you can steal away to in the middle of the work day for an hour, that's great, you can do that 2 - 3 a week and have your childcare built in around it (whatever arrangement you have during work day)...I've been you, minus two kids and husband.

Hard to say exactly without knowing more about your situation but if possible I would carve out at least 40 min for at least 3 days per week for exercise, and would eat the same diet but cut portion sizes. After establishing a baseline I would up the intensity of the work out and start cutting fat and sugar calories.

OP - I guess I need to commit to some very early morning gym runs. I am usually too tired to get up before the kids get up but it is not possible at all in the evenings as I relieve the sitter.

I don't think you are fat. I'm 5'6 and weight 160-165 after 2 kids and I think i look good. (Granted dont look great in a bikini, but look great in clothes). I do always have men eyeing me. One thing that will make you feel sexy is to go to the gym. After a workout I feel refreshed and great about my body and really sexy.

Count calories with an app like Lose It. I've been using it for two months and I've lost 25 pounds. Once you get into the habit it gets easier.

Start eating half of what you're used to eating. One slice of bacon and one egg, instead of two each. Half a sandwich etc. No sodas. Portion cereals, desserts etc.

I stopped eating simple carbs like white bread, white rice, tortillas, potatoes and also cut way back on sugar. I've been amazed how fast weight is coming off. It is much easier to me than counting points or calories.

np: posted above re no no to atkins and vegan heavy diet. Cut all potatoes period, unless they are sweet potatoes/yams which at least are great for Vit A. White potatos, white flour, forget entirely. Cut alchohol too. Save for special occasions (dinner out, etc)

Correct. The younger sib must already be a student at the school. I bet this is the last year for the sibling policy.

Yes, For district but there are few open seats after 1st grade. Seats will fill from 99 down even with sibs--so 91 will prob be behind every other sib. Our district g&t has only had 1-2 open seats each year after first.

You may not get a lot of responses given the time. You might want to report during a weekday. Sorry you are going through this. Is there a way you can create / strengthen relationships with clients? Does she know how much you work? Possible that she thinks you are inefficient? There's a woman where I work who is always in the office and works a ton. At first boss loved her. Now boss thinks she is inefficient.

Leave. I was you for two years -- and they don't care. Whatever strange bias exists will never go away. Don't work these long hours, let her or the others pick up the slack, lose some weight and get another job. Your weight has a direct correlation to your salary, I'm sure you've seen these studies, so get going. Good luck and seriously, don't stay!!! I wish I hadn't.

Costco, or, if you ahve a car, the Stew Lenards (Yonkers) birthday cakes are by far the best, around $40 for a half sheet and they decorate cute or will even do a photo cake for that price.

Of course try to get a job. It's not super easy these days but I suppose it depends what your industry is and your experience. You should never tell a perspective employer you are pregnant until you are close to showing or you have a medical issue when pregnant. You'll risk no getting chances at long term projects or other responsibilities. I know this is technically not allowed but people esp men will do this.

I forsee a lot of people dying because of these bikes. Don't get me wrong, I think bike share systems in general are great. I've lived in Paris and I loved the Velib. But here, drivers are way too aggressive and Citi Bike will put a lot of inexperienced cyclists on the streets.

Nonsense. The cyclists that die in NYC traffic are the ones that don't follow traffic rules or are too aggressive in the first place. NYC is very safe as long as you just accept that you are not on top of the food chain.

Yeah because all the taxis and trucks obey traffic laws. Taxis practically run over pedestrians as it is. How do you think they are going to react when they have to share the road with a bunch of wobbly European tourists?

Those European tourists will know how to ride a bike better than anybody else. They will also know how to stay at the back and slow down when a cab starts turning.

It works well in Paris (Velib), but I don't see it catching on in New York. Too many stubborn people who don't like change, too many people trying to get over on the system, too many bad drivers. The bike racks are already getting vandalized, according to Curbed, and that tells me all I need to know.
