Take him out to dinner at his favorite pre-baby restaurant and take pictures of him with the baby there. The next day print up one of the pictures and put it in a small frame (leather) with a note that says something like "Everything is better when your hanging with your dad" of "5-Star Dad." I'm in my late 40s and have a demanding job so I don't exercise like I used to. I need a quick jump-start. What have you done to start losing weight? Tears? Is there something else going on? That seems extreme over ill fitting clothing. Why did you buy pants that are so tight? Maybe take some of your nicer things to a tailor this week - so a few things fit nicely and maybe that will help your spirits? But sounds like there is more to this story. [ Reply | More ]

No, it's just been an ongoing battle since I hit my mid-40s. (And the pants DID fit when I bought them a few months ago.) I haven't even been eating more than usual. I used to be a runner, but a bad hip and knees made me stop. I try walking to and from work (about 5 miles roundtrip), but it's not enough. [ Reply | More ]

What do the pants look like? Were you buying spring pants months ago? So you gained weight. Get the clothing tailored, or buy bigger pants. Drink a lot of water. What are we supposed to say. It's not like somebody snuck into your closet and replaced your pants with smaller pants. It does sound like a frustrating weight gain, but we can't do much for you other than to tell you to walk more, drink more water, and cut back on some carbs. You can lose a few pounds in two weeks just by cutting out juice at breakfast, and stop each breads. [ Reply | More ]

First thing, is reducing the carbs you are eating. It's the hardest part for me, but it works. Next is drinking water and unsweetened teas. Again, hard but works. 30 day shred w Jillian works , you can get it on you tube. You need to get enough sleep. if you dont sleep enough, it destroys your metabolism. Stick with these things, you will see results. [ Reply | More ]

i feel your pain! i just went to JC but i think WW might be better as i go out to eat a lot. you can exercise on the weekends - hour long spin class or something. even walk home from work? add the exercise in somewhere. late 40s here too and what used to be hard now feels impossible! but i see people who do it. just have to eat less. or more strategically - too much less will lower your metabolism even more [ Reply | More ]

I downloade MyFitnessPal and bought a shit ton of frozen lean cuisine meals. I stuck to app. 1200 calories a day and drank A LOT of water. I plucked in every meal, there is a bar code scanner which makes it easy, and it was incredibly easy to see progress. It also tells you how long you have to go before you're at your goal. I lost 20 pounds in two months. [ Reply | More ]

Hey, yes I went back to real food, but cut out all sweets except for weekends. Now, I eat normal portions and eat whatever I want. Moderation is key. Other than no sweets during the week and eating normal sized portions, everything else is normal. I eat pasta too + bread. I have kept off for almost a year. Just suffer through it for a few months and then eat sensible meals. I actually ended up LOVING controlling what I ate so much and some of the lean cuisine meals are quite ok. Also, the first week is tough because the portions are so small, but you quickly adjust. Don't make plans for the weekend. If you do, eat before you go out and then have a light salad at your meal. Don't panic, don't starve or fast or jump on a trendy diet, you CAN do this in a healthy, sustainable way if you are motivated and it sounds like you are. Drink as much water as you can, make the best choices you can, squeeze in exercise wherever you can. All or nothing thinking is the enemy of weight loss - "I don't have time to go to the gym so there's no point doing anything," "I already blew it for today so I might as well eat the whole pizza," etc. Every second and every calorie counts - take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk home instead of taking the subway, run in the stairwell for 10 minutes after dinner. Think of calories as a financial budget - if you spent too much on a purse, you wouldn't use that to justify also springing for new shoes, you'd cut back future purchases. Go slowly, take your time, make changes you can live with for the long haul. Love, lost 25 lbs and kept it off w/o ever being hungry [ Reply | More ]

i feel like pants are a nightmare as I get older (and i'm still in my early 30s!) I just find that my body (stomach, hips, thighs), don't allow for pants like they used to and skirts/dresses just work a lot better...they also generally still fit if i've put on weight or not. In fact, wearing dresses (at least to work) makes me feel better about myself and I think it does a better job of hiding weight gain and I feel more put together. Not that this is an answer to your q, but thought someone might find it helpful. [ Reply | More ]

I'm eating fruit, vegetables, some whole grains and a few nuts. I'm gonna try to stick with this until i'm down for a total of 15 pounds. It's not as hard as it sounds. Over the last several years many high-scoring girls have been admitted to Hewitt. The parents I know with DD there are very happy. [ Reply | More ]

If your child already got into a good school seems like you're all set. City-wide G&T is such a long shot. ALthough you could just apply and if you get into G&T make your decision then. Last day to apply for G&T is 5/10. [ Reply | More ]

Seems like the day to bash Hewitt. If this post is real, OP should take another tour of both schools. Then she should stand in front of them at dismissal and see if she likes what she sees and hears. [ Reply | More ]

The girls at Hewitt are wonderful and so is the school. Don't even blink for a second. It's a great decision. If you have concerns, ask Kelly Pierre to peruse the blog. It will give you SO MUCH insight into what is actually happening at the school. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DH and I and our 2-year-old want to move to the burbs. We're torn between Westchester and NJ... specifically the Dobbs Ferry/Hastings/Irvington area and the Livingston/Chatham/Summit area. We want a liberal community - the more laid back the better. Schools are top priority, but we care about quality of education and enrichment opportunities, not so much HYP emissions. Pros of Westchester seem to be the beautiful scenery, charming towns, and the fact that it's New York. (We like Cuomo 1000x more than Christie.) Pros of NJ seem to be bigger towns and schools and therefore more potential activities and friends, more box stores (which sounds like a con but is comforting to my Tampa-raised self and DH's Milwaukee-raised self), and lower overall taxes. We both work in Times Square so the commute is pretty much a wash. Help us decide! Is there a big difference in vibe? What are the parents like in these areas? Is one school system way better than the other? And while snobbiness is probably inevitable in the Tri-state area, which has less? TIA! 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know all that much about either, but the people I know on the Dobbs Ferry/Hastigns line seem to be much more laidback, creative, interesting than those that I know from Westchester. I'm generalizing majorly, but if I were to hit the burbs, I would look at Dobbs Ferry/Hastings... and probably Montclair and Maplewood. [ Reply | More ]

I live there now and love it. Hate Christie, but all else good. Have met good friends there, plenty of liberals (and some smart conservatives, which has been good for opening my mind a crack). Schools are really good. Nice outdoor pool, you can walk to restaurants, train, movies, etc. has been a good move for us. [ Reply | More ]

Livingston is nice but no train (bus or drive to another town's station). In NJ you get a lot more house for your money and taxes aren't that different. The Westchester towns you mentioned have more character & history, but Summit & Chatham probably have better schools (esp Summit). [ Reply | More ]

Just found out I'm pregnant - had messed up periods since coming off the pill and have no idea if it's 3 weeks, 8 weeks, etc - but cannot get any NYC OB offices to call me back. [ - ] I feel like I need a financial advisor. How many of you have one? I'm almost 40 and have saved about 225K in my 401K over the years and have about 150K in the bank. Nothing else going on. I want to do something with the $$ I have in the bank because it earns nothing but what to do - 1/3 year CDs? Index funds? I am pretty good at saving but not making my money work for me -- investing is incredibly confusing. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Normally I'd say index funds, maybe with some exposure internationally, but the world is so messed up right now that there's no sure thing. CDs are earning practically nothing. The markets are uncertain. Emerging markets might be overblown (China's growth is poised to slow down). You could do worse than to keep a lot of your money in a savings account that earns a bit of interest. I assume your 401K is in the US market. [ Reply | More ]

^^full disclosure: I'm fairly exposed to the US and international markets, but I also have about $70K in cash. I keep reading doomsday predictions about the US markets, but I don't know what to do with that money if I cash out... I don't think you should feel bad about not being savvy in this area. Even the experts don't know what to do right now; they're all disagreeing with each other. [ Reply | More ]

Ask people for referrals and then go meet with each of them. A financial advisor is a very personal thing - like a lawyer and in some ways like a therapist in that you will share with them details of your life that no one else knows and they really need to be a good fit. Fit is not determined by whether they made other clients a lot of money, but by whether they listen to you, understand where you're coming from and where you want to go, and what you can and can't handle along the way. IMO, when you find the right person, you'll know. When in doubt, it's definitely not the right person, no matter how much someone else loves them. [ Reply | More ]

Ok. I can't give you any advice, as I don't know your income, risk tolerance, need for the cash, etc. but here is some tried and tested generic advice to get you going. 1. Have 6 months living expenses in cash/CDs just in case. 2. Ay financial advisor who doesn't charge you a fee is going to try and sell you stuff you likely don't want. 3. Fees are everything for your retirement funds. You can't predict the market, but if a fund charges you 1% a year, in 20 years they will have taken 20% of Your Money. 4. No one beats the market consistently. At least, not in a way you can benefit from. So, look for low fee index funds and own the market. 5. Invest for the long term. Buy, hold, and rebalance. 6. Your asset allocation (% of stocks/bonds) is all important. Age in bonds is a good start. 7. Learn something about this stuff. It among the most important learning of your life, but for some dumb reason we don't teach it in school. Start with The Bogleheads Guide to Investing. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

OP- thanks! I consider myself a long term investor. I have no debt - aggressively paid off all of my school loans when I got out of school. Lived very cheaply (with roommates, etc) until I could afford to really live on my own. Re #3 - I watched a special on Frontline last week which got me thinking about all of this. I am changing some investments in my 401k and rollover because of it. Thanks for the book rec--I will check out the book! [ Reply | More ]

Your scenario mirrors mine to the T (age, and $ figures) 3 years ago. Now, I am 41 and so, so happy with my FEE based Financial Advisor. She is a savvy 36 year old woman (I really appreciate going to a woman). She listens extensively to our goals (3 year, 5 year) and comes up with scenarios (e.g., school options for DS aged 3, investment options, refinancing scenarios). I get written plans and we review and strategize., She also advises very specifically on investing, risk tolerance, reigning in fees where possible. We own a couple of businesses and deal with a lot of professionals - our advisor is the best move we ever made. [ Reply | More ]
