Spa castle is fun; be prepared to be butt naked though. I highly recommend the scrub-downs. They are awesome. I hope you're not one of those white people that will make ethnocentric remarks about how shocking it is to see naked Asian ladies everywhere. It's cultural. [ Reply | More ]

Naked everywhere except for the common (mixed sex) areas and pool outside. Most women there are naked in the hit tubs and saunas. Youd need to be naked for the scrub I guess but they can drape people who feel uncomfortable. [ Reply | More ]

Look it up, Fieldston is one of the most generous schools, and it gives around 20%. Also, when you count number of students getting financial aid vs. the number of $$ of FA given compared to full tuition, the number is a lot lower. $1000 FA counts, yet doesn't help in $40+K school. DF had two kids at a private and got a break of $2K when they applied for FA. They were still stuck with nearly $80K in tuition. [ Reply | More ]

The cost to educate a child in NYC is around 58K. The 40K tuition doesn't actually even close to cover it. Teachers in NYC need to make higher salaries, because the cost of living is more expensive, cost of facilities is much more expensive, and they offer so many thing. W/O this tuition + significant donations, the schools would not be able to survive. [ Reply | More ]

This is how the rich keep the non rich out. It's like housing. Really nice towns with large homes carry the highest prices and property taxes..this makes the rich feel "exclusive". It does not necessarily mean the quality of education at private schools is any better just like living in a rich neighborhood doesn't mean their house will never get robbed. [ Reply | More ]

"This is how the rich keep the non rich out." they give plenty of FA, it's not about keeping others out. it's more about the insistence on small class settings that drives the cost per student much higher. the school is running for the most part on fixed costs. as classes get smaller, prices skyrocket. Because many do in regular privates. Therapists offices all over NYC are FILLED with private school kids from EVERY regular, TT, lower tier, etc. private school you want to name. It's what schools do to take the burden off of educating our kids. When they suck at something, they blame your kid and this crazy situation develops -- especially if you have a boy. Lots of kids with learning disabilities at all private schools as well, and learning disabilities are often accompanied by behavioral/emotional issues. [ Reply | More ]

I am not. What about the 36% from Brearley? No these kids worked extremely hard, the few with learning disabilities worked even harder, these kids have to have stellar grades, ECs, and essays to get into these schools connected or not. A friend who is a board member is not a legitimate connection whatsoever. The only legitimate connection is if at least one of your parents is an alum of the college and even that doesn't help much. Many apply to the college that their parent went to, but end up choosing another ivy. Trust me, if they weren't very smart, they wouldn't make it through these high schools. They are beyond rigorous and it takes a special kind of child to thrive in this environment. Many would crack under the pressure or not be able to reach the expectations and make good grades. [ - ] Okay, moms of boys age 7-10. What are your rules, vs. school requirements that you enforce for reading etc vs. computer screen based games? And will they change over the summer? For example, if your dc's 3rd grade class requires 30 min reading a night, and you enforce this, please list this for it certainly counts as reading even though it's not your own thing. Me, I've lost control - I don't enforce for the 30 min rule from his 2nd grade class - no classroom journal requirement I blame - but it's my fault. Need to get back on track, and want advice on wise rules for summer. TIA! 19 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

2nd grader here, he likes books. We have to threaten to take them away when he tries to stay up late and read them. We do let him get up early and read for 30 mins. We have no set time a day but he does read for about 45 mins a night. For summer, his school requires they read 5 books, so we will have him budget the time for it. [ Reply | More ]

First let me say forced reading is incredibly ignorant - I never made child do that assigned stuff from school. When dc was in K - (and couldn't read), I filled out form any which way. Reading is a joy and a pleasure - and putting on a timer every day and forcing a child to make it part of homework is extremely short sighted. My child is a dedicated reader now. In K,1, 2, 3 we would all read together - 4th/5th dc will go read on own. He likes xbox and will play on weekends or after homework is done before supper. I don't time it. In summer we don't have tv so it's not an issue. I don't do any academic work over summer with dc and never will. Doesn't mean we don't engage in intellectual pursuits. Summer is our freedom from homework/schoolwork. We love the Lazy, Crazy, Hazy days of summer. [ Reply | More ]

NNP: My thoughts on making children do homework over the summer vacation - parents are afraid that everyone else is doing it and if they don't their children will be "behind". Teachers love parents doing the work for them and suggest it. All children are different. Some like workbooks and think they are fun (although I'm not sure a child would choose a workbook over swimming, sprinklers, a game of tag, hide and seek, etc). Do what makes you and your child feel right. If it's a terrible battle - then don't do it. [ Reply | More ]

nr: I've never forced my kids to read and they are avid bookworms. When they were first learning we built in formal practice time to get over the hump, but since then we've just let them see how much we enjoy reading and made the time and material available. In my experience, setting up formal rules about reading instantly defines it as a chore and no fun. Sometimes you have to do that, but if you want to avoid battles and create a lasting habit, it's better if you can find a way to get them self-motivated - i.e., brush your teeth b/c cavities stink, not b/c I told you so. Read b/c it's fun and expands your world, not b/c the school says you have to. [ Reply | More ]
