I laugh when people say this. I don't know why, but I take pleasure in other peoples jealousy of us. I would never say this IRL, but I love how successful many of us are and I LOVE when bigots just can't handle the fact.

I'd just like to add that my husband only remembers one gift from his Bar Mitzvah - a baseball card. He still talks about it. You can def give a gift if you want - money is what everyone does, but a gift is just fine.

No! It does not have to be a multiple of 18. That is usually for small donations-18, 36, 54. Bigger gifts can be any amount. You can give $150, $200, $300. Or if you want, $180, $360, etc.

I think calling on a good friend or family member nearby if you can. If this were a good friend of mine, I would have offered but none of my friends were in this situation. Sometimes, people may not realize you need the help. I hope someone can do this for you! My DH remembers going to his neighbors with his dad after they dropped off his mother at the hospital to give birth. Unfortunately, his brother came so quick his father missed the birth.

My parents were DC east. Mother-in-law was scheduled to come. However evil sister-in-law persuaded her not to. Hired our regular babysitter to stay overnight if unites. Did not have any family in the area either.

My mom. Also get post partum help in place so you have time to rest and heal the first few weeks. As much as you can get.
We watched a DC of friends for the birth of their second child- it was fine! Kind of a thrill for us actually :) ask a few friends, or suss them out. They might enjoy doing it.

For my second, my parents were here and kept our 2 yo. For my third, I went into labor earlier than we "planned" (lol) and we called a dear friend to come over. She slept at our house, took the oldest to school and brought 2 yo to her house for the day so that dh could be with me. My parents flew in after that and took over.

That seems like a really high range for a gift, to be honest. Do you think that she actually just wants you to give her some cash like payment for the use of her place? Otherwise, I think a gift in the $100 range would come across as a really nice gesture and not going overboard.

Wine, restaurant or spa gc are really the most universally appealing. Things for the home are tough unless you're really good at picking things out or unless her taste is not that specific. The only other more generic item that people seem to like is a neutral colored cashmere throw.

I've done a few red-eyes and basically even if the kid slept, I didn't, and since my kids usually sleep 11 hours or so at night, a 5-6hour flight, even if they sleep for all of it, is only half their usual sleep. It just didn't seem worth the disruption to me. That said we did it more than once when we had to attend a wedding and just had a weekend, stuff like that.

I found early flights are better. Flew with my dc at 3 months and 1. We took 5:30 flights and she pretty much slept for the most part. Also the flight may not be full so you can move to an empty row and let them lay out.

Planes are a novelty for most kids, so they are unlikely to sleep for at least 3 hours into the flight. Go for the morning flight. If kids dont sleep, you are during your own waking hours and its ok, you can handle it. If they dont sleep and its during your night, you will be miserable trying to entertain them and they will be inherently crankier.

I would probably do the 10PM flight because the baby would be in a better mood and so he would probably go to sleep right when you settle in. With the early flight, you have to wake DB up at 4 or whenever, and he'll be in a bad mood for the flight.

Don't feel resentful. You have always been happy to help so they don't realize things have changed. You may find the less you do for them the less contact you will have with them. People will take advantage if they can and so far you have happily let them. No need for you to feel bad just set new boundaries that you are happy with and don't expect other people to be as helpful as you are. You can only change your own behavior. GL

YES! I'm usually good with shows, but had the hardest time following all these twists. (SPOILER ALERT). So Charlie was working for Cyrus, and tried to kill that Billy-guy on behalf of Cyrus. But instead, Billy convinced Charley to let him go, and then Charley was also working for Billy? (or not?) And then Billy was the mole all along, even when he was working for the vice president (but why??) And then that David Ross character (the former DA, not sure if David is his name) decided to steal the Defiance card in order to implicate Billy as the mole? But how did David Ross know Billy was the mole? Also, I can't remember why Billy killed that woman and framed David Ross to begin with. Finally, Olivia pope's dad! Really? And he ordered Jake to sleep with his own daughter, and then to have her kidnapped/killed? Why didn't he just call and invite her for a chat? Bizarro.

$15-$20 is the range for a nanny. part time is typically more $$$ than full time. if you're looking for a college educated american, you'll be $20-$25. gross it up by 30% for on the books. all of these numbers are take home to the individual.

Thanks, this is always what people told me, but... When I make the count about how much nannies are really paid by week (through internet's blog) it looks that it starts 13 to 14/15, and it would be even good!!! I have a friend who told me the same, but when I asked her how much she pays for her p/t nanny, she said 15... Reliable person with 10 years experience... She said because she gave her a favour... But... Come on! She found her by care.com... a favour?
It looks that is all about ask more for obtaining the right payment
I mean, it's understanble, $20! I have a PhD and I don't have a salary much higher than this

It's extremely rare that anyone gets $20/hr starting salary unless it's some very special situation. People on UB love to inflate nanny prices.

I don't believe a child can learn enough Mandarin to matter, unless immersed at home and school. Spanish is much easier to pick-up.

Eh. Not really. My ds wanted to take Mandarin when he got to HS. He wasn't even a great student in middle school, and I remember DH and I looking at each other and thinking, this will not go well. I also remember going to parents' night and seeing the teacher show us what the 1st year chinese students could be doing by the end of the year. I was still skeptical. Guess what. I never even knew this was a thing. Ds has a "pictographic" memory and he has had straight A's in Chinese for three years. He loves it. He just somehow looks at these things that look to me like bird scratch, and he "sees" them like Rain Man. He's in the language honor society and we've now had several exchange students, but all happened in 9th grade.

I really was only responding to the language thing but have no idea. I think he just enjoys it, wants to pursue it, possibly in college, and it was something that came entirely out of the blue. We weren't weird people trying to get him into something when he was young. I actually have had some similar feelings about some families we know who send their kids at 4, 5 etc. to Chinese classes. It could take, but maybe not.

Same responder - the pictographic memory thing, not sure but good point that it might bode well for different stuff later. Our experience is just that he has to want it first. Our suggestions are tertiary.

English is the language of the Internet, of commerce, etc. People spent much time and energy in the past learning Russian or Japanese. Now, mostly useless. Teach your kids to code, or to actually *do* something independently -- they'll be much better off.

Really, just take the language you want. Everyone used to talk about Spanish, but now that doesn't seem nearly as important. At age 10, 14 or even 18 you have no idea what you are going to do with the language anyway and learning one you like trains your brain to learn languages.

Makes you retain water. Try Rodial skinny beach sticks you mix with water and drink twice a day. They help with bloat and water retention. You can get them at Space NK. Other than that get a spray tan which makes everyone look better and enjoy your vacation. Also if your suit doesn't fit go get a Norma Kamali one piece and you'll feel like a sexy old movie star on the beach!

They don't know that you didn't purposely buy the car somewhere else just to avoid the NYC sales tax. If you've owned it for 10 years, maybe different story if you can prove you paid sales tax somewhere else, then you just do something on your taxes next year to get a credit against what you had to pay (an accountant would know). Only other thing is if NYC has it in their regulations that they will charge sales tax on any vehicle brought into the city no matter what the vehicle's history. I would believe that just based on the fact that the city is choking with vehicles and can do what they want.

Do you have a record of what the sales tax you paid in your home state? They will deduct the rate you paid there from the presumably higher rate in NYC.

This is not exclusive to NY. When registering a vehicle most states request proof that sales tax was paid at purchase (see your bill of sale). If so, then you will likely not pay this a second time in your new state, or it will be adjusted to reflect your previous sales tax payment. If not, you will assessed sales or use tax.

The frequency of errors and clumsy construction in your post strongly suggests that you are anything but a 'whiz at language.' Learn parallel construction, rules of punctuation and capitalization, and proofreading before trying to teach others. A little humility about your (lack of) ability might help as well.

OP: ahhhh you are right, I totally FORGOT about Aniston (of course, never a fan of "Friends", I do find her totally forgettable). Yes, Aniston seems more in the mold of Paltrow. In the sense of "dull", living a small life in the spotlight. Jolie was, before Brad, someone who had dumped her vial of Billy Bob Thornton's blood aside, and gone and adopted Maddox from Vietnam as a single mom, barely 30. I remember reading about her in VF, thinking this is the hottest single mom to adopt a foreign baby that I've ever read of/seen. So Jolie was always far far more interesting....I see now. Forgot about Aniston...I get it now. It's coming back. Must have been a total arrow in the heart when he met her: so different from the other girls he was used to...I thought her NYT piece the other day was superb.

I personally think rich and famous people who make a big deal about their "humanitarian" acts are pompous and narcisstic. Anyone who is that famous and/or wealthy has "good causes" begging for them to put their name to them, flying them out, putting them up. The amount of time and money is negligble given their salaries and high-profile lives. The PR people must love it. Bono is an example. Of course all these world leaders are falling all over themselves to meet him. It isn't like a local teacher committing him/herself to a cause.

I don't know. The alternative is that they personally do good acts yet bring no attention to them, or write a check and don't ever take the trouble to show up in person. It's one of those things where you just have to give someone some publicity for one thing in order to get people to pay attention to something else.

Both are actresses who come from film industry families. Both were mostly raised in LA. Both are relatively educated as actresses go. Both are thin and have very angular features. Both seem at least faux family oriented. Both come from money. Just to name a few similarities. The list of ways they're diffferent is far shorter.

It's really not all that interesting. They're all actresses. He's an actor. Pretty typical for actors and actresses to get together. Aniston was not a child of the industry in the way Jolie and Paltrow are. J and P come from ledgendary acting families. Not so with Aniston. Still, I don't find it weird at all that a long-term top actor has dated three different top actresses. They're not even close to "different" when you consider the range of possibilities.

Define "average" actress. Child of nobodies with no money who has tutors on the set as stage mom drags you around to auditions/commercial shoots, then when you're 16 you get some big roles? Someone like Lindsay Lohan? Is that the average actress intelligence you are comparing to? Cause people like Tilda Swinton, Jodi Foster, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Debra Winger, sigourney Weaver, Cate Blantchett, Nicole Kidman, do not seem any less smart. So not sure what the 'average actress' is, cause Paltrow's been very successful and compared to those with similar success she's not an intellectual standout. Hardly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The weird fixation on HS here is just bizarre. Paltrow is skinny, blonde, and has a fake British accent. Oh,and she went to "Spence". BFD...by no standard is this "educated".

BWAH HA HA. Her parents were rich and famous, they sent her to Spence. Big whoop.

Come on. My favorite is Demi Moore who wanted to change Scarlet Letter for the movie because "no one knows the story".

She said RELATIVELY. Which is correct.

Relative to what? Presumably most actresses graduated high school. Except poor Demi.

Oddly enough I eventually find that Brad Pitt probably has a really weak mind. I think the women are the ones who control him. He's just in the web of the strongest woman of them all.

Yeah, he seems like a bland, easygoing pothead.

Jolie seems to be a lot more confident and probably better in bed. At the end of the day, a midwest boy that lucked out on an acting job is not going to be an intellectual challenge to anyone. Like the above poster said, he was probably the one being chosen not the other way around.

I think Paltrow seems far more confident. Though I dislike her and Jolie both.

He requested AJ for the movie- Mr. and Mrs. Smith- that is how their affair started.

Angelina Jolie is stunningly beautiful face wise. I agree that she has to be anorexic or some form or ed. She is so thin and if you look at pictures before she was famous she's naturally more curvy. I think it takes a certain type of person to adopt children from another country, who are of another race and raise them as one big blended family with your own dcs. I respect that. To be honest I don't think many actors/actresses are educated, well informed people. Too much time in that world keeps you out of touch from real life. That whole career path is about idealizing.

It does take a certain kind of person, that is true. She is selfless in that way. HOWEVER she has unlimited funds and full time nannies for each kids and can leave the house and go wherever, whenever she wants. She can support these kids AND their kids and probably another generation worth on what she has right now. So what?
