Everyone has an opinion...and I don't really think the BEST thing makes sense. Most of the district 2 schools are strong, lots on the UES but some people love PS 40, on 2nd Ave & 20th St. Dist 2 covers a big area. Why change if you like what you have now?

There are many good neighborhood public schools. None are more "top-notch" than any other. There are differences. I guarantee you that the top students from every public school (including some mediocre ones) get into the same great middle and high schools. Do parents in Chappaqua, Scarsdale, and other suburbs really obsess over which elementary school might be a little better than another. Nope. In fact, it is the high schools people care about, and that's how suburbs are judged. An elementary school in a suburb without a top high school, but actually be a wee bit better than one in the top high school's 'hood, but do you think parents fret about that? They don't.

OK, point taken. We are looking for more space, which is why we are considering it. I'd like for us to always be in walking distance. Same question- can you think of any middle or high schools in Manhattan that would be worth looking into? It's not that far off for us- we're just casting about right now though.

You will probably get the most for your money on the UES, east of 3rd or 2nd. Good schools up there too.

You're already there. 234, 276 and 89. Southern BPC is by far best neighborhood - right on water, often water views, loads of parks and playgrounds, 5-10 min walk using walking overpass across West to where 1/2/3 and 4/5/6 converge and are two blocks apart, next year will have even more access underground to Fulton Street when World Finance complex is finished and 276 has a middle school

Moving Company: Moishes. We have used them three times and each time they had the lowest bid and were very reliable.
Boxes: look on Craigslist, lots of time people will sell or give away moving boxes after they have moved.

Is it possible that some of you are drinking too much kool-aid? NYC is a great city, and the best in the world I agree. But nonetheless, it is a rat-race, all day. Its not the be-all and end-all of everything good in life. Surely, there are other places one could live as fulfilling a life and surely there are people who realize this and move away? I think CA and FL might offer something, but have not done the math, and have not really checked out cities, apts, schools, other costs in great detail..

Your premise is somewhat faulty. Very rarely can you take the income with you. If you're at $1mm or under in NYC, the tradeoffs are likely worth it. 50% give or take income hit but good free school, better work/life balance etc. At the higher numbers, the jobs often just aren't there or aren't there in remotely the same numbers to even pay 50% of what someone makes in NYC. Then, the tradeoffs might not be worth it.

You can't retire on that unless you're over 60 already and kids are done with school. She said HHI and NW so if that's all you have in NW, you can't sacrifice your income.

np: exactly. what OP is suggesting is, what if you saved rather than spent while earning a lot in NYC and then moved to the lower COL area and barely worked at all bc you could live off your unearned income. i do know people who live like this but it is rare.

So by saved do you mean skipped out on private schools and lived in Queens in a 2bed (where the schools are a big question mark)? There are some things that you just can't count on scrimping on.

by saving, i meant even before all that. actually, i think the problem we have, is that we don't think of any of this until we're married w kids in our mid-late 30s or older. but yet many successful NYC professionals were earning substantial salaries by their early 30s. but when you're childless and definitely when you're single, most people esp in NYC earning good money are spending the vast majority of it on a pretty darn nice lifestyle. then they're 35 and getting married and suddenly they also want a bigger apt, and then they have kids and need a nanny and then they have to pay for preschool and they are thinking more seriously about college and retirement suddenly the money doesn't stretch as far. the people i know who saved well and lived moderately before marriage and kids, are in very good positions today wo having to make a 7 figure income.

How do you barely work at all on a NW of $1mm if you still need a house, send kids college and retire. I think it would be tough to do that on $5 if your kids are still school aged.

it really depends. we considered living in a small midwestern town where dh's family is. we could have gotten a lovely home for about $250K and quality public schools (nothing phenomenal, but good) and the income taxes, property taxes, etc. in that area are so low. everything is inexpensive - my ILs tennis club costs $200/year for the family for pretty much as much tennis as you can play both indoor and outdoor and includes ball machine use. kids activities all cost under $100. insurance is cheap - car and homeowners. gas is cheaper too. the only thing that stays roughly the same is groceries. if you'd be willing to consider public university (which is very good there), you barely have to save for college. it's a remarkably easy and inexpensive lifestyle.

Why didn't you? I'd have a hard time telling my kids that there only option for college was OSU (or whatever the big State U is in applicable state) or massive loans elsewhere, if I had been in a position to provide much more for them but chose not to. I'm not trying to bash on a particular state u because some are great but the limited worldview of growing up and then spending all of your college years in the same place is not something I want to choose for my DCs in advance.

The 1mm or 5mm was supposed to be NW not HHI. The premise was that at some NW you might be able to move elsewhere and not have to work or at least earn much money.

As a man and earner, the problem with leaving nyc is your earnings will plummet when that happens.
Life in the city can be pretty fuckin amazing when you are pulling down big coin.
Would you quit being a wide receiver for the Steelers due to the hours and stress? Most don't, and its the same with finance. You don't see a lot of people quitting at the top of their game.

I agree with that. If you are doing well, you might as well milk it. But there has to be some point, I think, where you've had your fill, you've had a good time, and you have more than enough to just call it quits and take it easy. I'm just wondering where that point is and how many people think about it.

You're not going to quit at the top of the game, like PP said. So, when kids are done with school? Maybe even college if you had your kids relatively young and you'll still be in early 50s when they all finish HS.

At $1mm or $5mm in NYC, I would be very very comfortable. That amount goes a long way here, too. It's not "retire early" money, but it's not a rough life. And I formerly lived in San Francisco during years when that was even crazier money-wise than New York.

$50K in NYC is pretty low at 40yo. and i don't think career trajectory is set in stone in 20s. my DH's first job post college paid $9/hr (20 years ago) and it took him 14 years to crack 6 figures. but his income has quadrupled in the past 6 years. and this is all in the same field. there was a graduate degree obtained, but it was at about the 10 year mark.

Depends on how you define 'lazy'. Straight out of school, he had to work 13-14 hours a day on top of an hour-plus commute, and was paid a pittance. I don't think he'll ever complain about anything ever again as long as he gets to sleep eight hours a day, which he couldn't do in the old days. He's home for dinner 90% of the time and occasionally has at most an hour or so of work-related phone calls or e-mail when at home. Is that lazy by today's standards?

What kind of education does he have? It is never too late to change your career path if that is your true desire but it sounds like maybe your dh is content doing what he's doing. If he wanted to move up in banking, he would have sought out opportunities to do so - either through education, changing companies, etc.

That is even low for back office work. What does he do and what is his educational background? One way to move up the income ladder from that sort of role is to move into IT and become a business analyst with a specialty in Operations. He doesn't sound like a go-getter, though, so he probably wouldn't do be up for it. Just a thought, anyway.

He processes data; makes invoices to send to other banks; translates material from another language that he speaks well; communicates with other firms in that country. Actually he's more in the mid-$50s now; they slashed some salary in 2009; I think he was around $60k then. He's good with computers and math but I don't think he knows how to program. Isn't IT flooded these days?

OP again: talked with DH some last night. He doesn't want to leave his job because (1) he has great co-workers who respect what he does, (2) has a job where he can use his skills that are very rare (almost no Americans speak the languages he speaks) but aren't in much demand. As for salary he's happy with it because he compares it to what people earn in other countries that he might want to live in; a few years ago he had a chance to go work there but he would have been paid half what he earns now and I have to admit I said I didn't want to go. We would have lived well there but can save for the future better here. And I would have depended on him for basic stuff like just talking t neighbors.

you nailed it on the head - it's all about geography. NEST is incredibly hard to commute to, TAG is in an "undesirable" neighborhood, and that just about exhausts the options. As competition for the location gets more and more pronounced, the quality of students increases. Just like with Stuy and Bx Sci - Stuyvesant is in a great location, BS is in nowhere, Bronx. Where would you rather go?

These kinds of responses just demonstrate how parochial you are. There are plenty of students who live on the UES for whom the commute to Stuy is definitely not in a great location and it is far easier to get to Bx Sci. You seem to be saying the quality of student at Anderson is higher. Lol! Only if by "higher" you mean there are far more children of crazy UES and UWS parents. For some people, that isn't a selling point.

I meant it as tongue in cheek, which doesn't translate well when typed. FWIW, DC chose Bx Sci over Stuy, and we turned down Anderson for him when we got a spot in 2001 because the commute from Queens would have been hell. Having said that, 17 years ago people weren't all that worked up about G&T and Anderson and all that. You could just go to your good old neighborhood school, get into a decent neighborhood middle, then to SHS or Townsend Harris and not get sucked into this admissions vortex because there wasn't any. I have a younger dd who is in elementary school and the environment is so much more charged and desperate now. We never entertained the thought of privates, and now all of a sudden we think that if we sacrifice big bucks, her life will be set for years of intellectual and financial satisfaction. It's all bullshit, of course, but it's an easy sell.

You can still do that. No one has to buy into all this craziness. Most of the students at the specialized high schools don't come from g&t programs -- they do often come from good middle schools but there are plenty of those, also filled with dcs who went to their gen ed publics. I will be very surprised if that changes. Because ultimately, the g&t programs aren't really going to make your bright kid any more advanced than the bright kid who is at the local gen ed. That is why there's so much tutoring going on at g&t programs, at so-called tt private schools, and so on. But the truly "gifted" kids, whether from a g&t program or a good neighborhood school, aren't being tutored.

That's because the people posting on UB are mainly Manhattan mothers and are obsessed with Hunter and Anderson. Anderson is no better than any other citywide, and some would say it has arguably worse facilities. If you were in Brownstone Brooklyn, with plenty of highly educated parents who don't post on UB as much, you would find very little interest in Anderson because it is simply too far. But those mothers don't post constantly about how BSI and NEST are just so much better than Anderson -- they just choose the more convenient school knowing there's no difference and also knowing that Anderson is definitely not worth an hour commute each way.

Ours did, because we couldn't afford to give her a raise. We were ok, with her leaving and still keep in touch.

I wouldn't put much thought into it. People leave for all sorts of reasons, and you'll never really know unless she tells you. So assume that she wants to do something else, and your kids will accept that explanation. GL!

Anderson middle school is academically challenging, if that is what you're looking for. Also, it is a citywide school, so the fact that you're in D3 does not give you priority over any other applicant.

My son is going back to Taconic for his sixth year. Good fun all around camp. Kids can find something they like sports, art, theater, water sports. Sign up for rookie day which is usually in July. Your child gets to spend a day at camp.

OP: thanks! Just seeing this. Great to know...I've heard good things about it. I thought I might want a bit more separation between boys and girls, but it seems like the kids and families are very down to earth, and that may be what wins out for me. Thanks again!

What a terrible idea. Teaching your kid that adults are there to provide personal services like manicures, is just gross. Adults should not be paid to service children.

We like Dashing Diva. The salons are clean, the staff turn over (at least at the ones I go to) is very low which indicates they treat their staff well, and it's pretty in there.

My mom does this occasionally with her granddaughters the same age, but she usually does pedicures (in the summer at least) because the polish lasts longer.

you should consult a lawyer. however, in most cases your kids , even if you don't have a will, would go to a family member over strangers assuming basic fitness to parent. you may want to express a preference for a specific family member, of course.

Ask friends for recommendations for lawyers. Think about who your top few choices are to take kids in case something happens. Also think about what you want to happen to your money - split evenly between kids, have someone as a trustee until they get older, etc.
