[ - ] per the earlier public vs private post: we were at a downtown coed pvt and switched to smallish selective public for HS. Our decision really was almost 100 % wanting DD to be with a peer group that was less entitled and materialistic--for us, 7th and 8th grade were the years that the kids REALLY started to notice wealth and it got a little toxic. We are super happy with our decision. Classes are small (under 25) --but there are trade-offs-- only 1 foreign language option for example, and not nearly as many class trips. The teachers on the whole are as good or better-- and very passionate about public education. They tend to be young (at our school) and extremely committed. At the end of the day for us it was really about peer group-- and the peer group at dd's HS is diverse, ambitious and passionate. The college placements are as strong as her old school's (lots of bard, middlebury, NYU, smith, vassar-- a handful of Ivies each year). ANYWAY--it really was the right decision for us. 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

NP Who cares who gets in! It may not be "as good" as Brearley but, so what? My two DCs are both at a TT school but I sincerely believe that all (ok 99%) of the schools in NYC are wonderful schools. There is just a very high level of competition amongst schools in NYC - I guess that is the norm in NYC for everything! Any of these would rank at TT in just about any other city. For example, only in NYC do you have three top girls schools. [ Reply | More ]

It's very easy to get into, there's just no getting around that. I'm a Manhattan lifer and I've never heard of anyone getting rejected. If you hear someone goes to Hewitt, you figure they're nice and not a super student; some girls start there and turn out to be better students than they were expected vis a vis score etc, and often they transfer to a better school in 4th grade or so (my bff went from there to Spence). That said, it seems pleasant and welcoming and, unlike, say, Dwight, not really wild in later years [ Reply | More ]

I don't know how it was 5 or 10 years ago, but having just gone through the process I can tell you we liked it very much. I think what you read here is ridiculous, and it is all branding perpetuating by a number of TT-obsessed idiots on this board. Our DD is going elsewhere because we wanted Catholic - but this was a real contendent. We felt it was a great place, particularly for LS. All the girls seemed very happy. The HS student tour guide we had was very impressive and certainly better spoken and more personable than the S and C girls we met, for example. That is not to say that S and C don't have a better reputation for HS, but it was just our observation. Also, the new HoS is really imopressive and working very hard to change the current perception. By the time a DD entering K now will graduate, I feel sure that Hewitt will be spoken of in very different terms. [ Reply | More ]

My dd got a great education in the lower school. It is more mixed in middle school, but I think that may change (for the better) with time as the school gets stronger. We left in middle school for a school considered "TT" by this board, so she would have more opportunities/challenges. And although we left Hewitt, the fact that she's been at both "bottom tier" and "TT" makes me question how much those labels really mean. She's still the same kid. In other words, look with an open mind and choose what makes most sense for your child at the time. It was definitely the right lower school for DD. [ Reply | More ]

I think if you are okay with just getting any one of M, CSH, and H, you will probably be fine. The other girls schools are EXTREMELY difficult to get into. The big question here is whether you will be fine with getting just H or M at the end of the day, or if you will wish you'd put some coeds on the list. They are both very nurturing in the lower school. Brearley becomes a "pressure cooker" later because it asks girls to leave if they can't perform. Chapin is "nurturing" later because it deals with its mistakes by putting them in the bottom track and carrying on (and hence does not have the college stats that Brearley does). If your kid is really smart, they are both extremely rigorous and competitive. That's all there is too it. [ Reply | More ]

OP, what is your definition of "nurturing"? It's just a word -- use something more specific so you can get better answers. Do you mean a school that "nurtures" brilliance? They all claim to do this. Do you mean a school that is understanding when dcs don't immediately grasp high level concepts? Lol! Nurturing is mostly used on UB to describe schools that are not very academic and mostly used by parents with kids at the so called third tier schools. Sweet is similar to nurturing except that it tends to be related to third tier schools that have been around longer. All the top schools, be it co-ed or ss or private or public, are nurturing. Collegiate, Trinity, Hunter, Spence...the care and attention at all these top schools and the level of involvement by the PTA are enormous. But, on UB, the families at second and third tier schools will continue to voice their frustrations saying that these schools lack windows, that they are pressure cookers, that they hold little concern for the students, that they are mainly filled with families who whip their kids if they bring home anything less than an A+...you get the point. We all get the point! [ Reply | More ]

Now it's about kids needing tutors at TT schools and how the schools don't give care or attention to the students. WTF are you smoking? Explain to me then why it is that year after year - for decades - these schools receive more applicants than other schools? Explain to me why intelligent and caring parents continue to want to send their kids to these schools year after year - for decades? Explain to me how kids can perform at such a high level - for years - if they were not happy and got encouragement? Explain to me why so many legacies and alumni want to send their kids back to these schools? Now you are going to tell me some bullshit about some kid you know who hated her TT school and went to some random school, right? Now you are going to tell me how you know this and that family who passed had a horrible experience at a TT school. Of course you are going to tell me how passed on the TT schools. If you disagree, the proper response would have been to say "yes they are - when students are struggling academically the top schools look for new ways to teach the material to them that might work better for them". THAT is nurturing. For your information, a brilliant student can like a school that isn't nurturing. Harvard isn't nurturing!! There really isn't a private that has remedial, middle of the road and honors. They simply don't have the focus or resources to handle all three segments. Those prizes were largely won by the wave of European Jewish immigrants who came over a bit before WWII. That's not odd--the payoff is huge for funding special needs and as the parent of a gifted dc (I mean gifted in the IQ test definition of it), I'd rather see the money going to a kid who needs the extra help to reach the standards. My kid will, in all likelihood, go to college and get a decent job. It's in society's best interest to make sure all kids have a chance to do that. 99.9% of gifted kids will be fine in regular classrooms (I know...everyone will wail...but what if my darling is bored?!?! They'll still be ok). Kids who fall behind tend to stay behind and drop out. They can't get jobs and become a drain on society. Better to get them help early on. [ Reply | More ]

Really? Do you think all the kids who grew up to be inventors/innovators had gifted education to thank for it? Come on--you're being ridiculous. There are loads of reasons why the US isn't going to be the leader in many things anymore--the biggest reason is that China and India's economies are surpassing ours. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I do believe all those inventors/innovators have benefited from their education, not necessarily here though. We have been in great luck in the past to attract best scientists from around the world including Europe, Russia and China. They've used their education to help us build the best universities and companies in US. Our luck may run out one day. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree that certain kids need special help like those with autism, etc. What I don't understand is, what cause those bad gen ed schools bad? Teachers in those schools all have license, education degree(s), nice classrooms, playground... How come children from India, Russia, China, Vietnam who lack all of that still do much better? We don't need 100% accurate, and even Hunter needs the 2nd round. Combining this with more advanced tests may get more accurate evaluation. Considering all the money DOE has spent and will be spending, expanding the test sounds a better solution. [ Reply | More ]

The DOE should do what it started to do 6 years ago- end corruption, standardize test, set minimums to 95 not 90 and continue to build out a school or two a year. If they want to shake things up - score it by district instead of city for districtwide eligibility, set a fixed number of seats and call it a day. [ Reply | More ]

By loosening the admissions requirements, she is suggesting disadvantaged kids can be admitted via teacher recommendation instead of test scores. This seems difficult to regulate and set a standard. Surely there must be a fair minimum score for all, no? Maybe she should push for more school choices and excellent charter school programs instead of lowering standards for the G&T program? At least as characterized in the paper, the loosened admission requirements wil be window dressing. They appear to address the issue of minority admissions, without actually having a material effect. If your long term goal is to preserve standards, window dressing is exactly what you want. In the absence of any action on minority enrollments, there is a material chance of change that will actually destroy the G&T program. Quinn's proposal greatly reduces that possibility.
