[ - ] We love progressive and think DS would thrive in that kind of environment. However he is very "advanced" academically & will also need a school that's rigorous. Of course we are/will tour, but also wondering what people here think would be the best fit. We live on the UWS if that matters. Thanks! 33 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Personally I was neutral about NBS. It seemed like a solid school, but it was not a school I was excited about. I had the same feeling about Chapin, CSH and Hewitt, and did not like Spence at all. The two schools that I loved were Brearley and MM - which are very different in many ways. But my opinion is useless to you because it is just that - an opinion. And that is what you will find on this forum: personal views, mostly written by people with a specific agenda in mind (including a very strong anti-Catholic bias) and with very little experience of any of the actual schools (and certainly nobody here has comparative experience of all the schools!). People on this forum will uniformly focus on current college placements (13 years from now who knows what they will be?) and not on values, educational philosophy, fit with the child’s personality and a number of other aspects that I think a parent should focus on. So my suggestion is to come on UB for specific factual information, not for opinions. GL. [ Reply | More ]

That's totally not true, though you probably think your kid is screwed if she doesn't go to HYP. Truth is, however, that she's just as screwed at Spence or Great Neck North. The paradox in thinking here is that you want your kid to go to a great high school so they can have an fantastic experience that is super-rigorous, and yet her chance of going to HYP is diminished by the competition. What are you talking about? The smartest girls from nyc private schools go to those kind of boarding schools, and then they go to top colleges. For the most part, these girls are wicked smart, wicked rich, wickedly driven, and... wickedly well-educated by the time they are applying. Harvard takes dozens of kids every year from Andover alone. How am I bitter and incendiary? Admissions ARE difficult. My dc didn't want to look at boarding but many of her friends did, and I've witnessed how it works at the boys schools for many years. You can hardly write your own ticket. They are tough schools. She'll likely get into one or maybe two but "have her pick?" Doubtful. And at Spence, there is no advisor helping her with BS admissions. On the positive side, she's female. From what I understand, there are many more male applicants. [ Reply | More ]

Just been through this. Your DD sounds like a great candidate and so will get into some of these schools. However, it's as competitive as NYC so she's unlikely to get into them all & shouldn't set her heart on any one school. Good luck! She'll do very well. [ Reply | More ]

This is the DOE line I hate from that article: “We are not reducing anyone’s percentiles,” said Erin Hughes, an Education Department spokeswoman. “No students will be disadvantaged because of Pearson’s errors.” By not recalibrating the scores that are supposed to be lower, it disadvantages the lottery pool. She made good grades in lower school, but her transition to MS has been slightly rough with mostly B-s, the workload at her school increases a lot in MS. Her teachers just say that her greatest weaknesses are quizzes and tests, which I'm assuming is because she waits until the last minute to study. We have tutors for math and history which hasn't brought her math grade up much and her history grade from a C+ to a B-. [ Reply | More ]

unfortunately it seems that you need to teach her study habits even if that means quizzing her along the way to make sure things are not left to the last minute. She may not know how to study, take notes or keep up. If so, you need to show her and "hold her hand" for awhile till she can do it on her own. Then, you need to tell her what your expectations are. And if she doesn't meet them, you'll take away her cellphone or her favorite sweater or whatever - have a list of things she cares about and make sure expectations and consequences are clear. She will hate you, but she'll get some decent habits. You have to keep it up till it's second nature for her. OTOH, her 6th grade grades don't matter. It's her 7th grade grades that matter the most.
