Not OP, but I disagree. In my personal experience, it is impossible for a teacher (even with part time support) to focus appropriately on a class of 30 or more. Inevitably the worst and the best will take up all of her time and the average students will be largely ignored.

np. And how do these studies control for teacher quality? Do you have any personal experience with this at all? 15 students in a 5th grade class would be quite stifling, I would imagine.

What is your personal experience? Mine contradicts this. I've seen classes of 20 out of control with a few rowdy kids and a teacher who couldn't handle it, and I've seen classes of 33-35 that are orderly and get a ton done. Teachers override class size.

I went to public school (30+ kids) and was a very good student. I got a fair amount of attention from teachers throughout (extra work, small groups with the teacher for advanced curriculum etc). So did my sister. The average kids were pretty much ignored. Granted, a sample of two. But as I said, this is my personal experience.

In independent schools, kids usually spend about half the day in groups of one half the class size or smaller, each with a teacher. My child had about ten teachers over a week.

That was my thought - both of my children were looking to get out of their pre-school class of 10 kids. Can't imagine having that again in elementary school. Rather 20-25 and two teachers than 8-10 kids and one teacher.

np: this breakdown is only in the earliest grades, and really reflects the wide (and normal) development range for kids that age. At our dc's school, reading groups were 3-6 kids in k-3, because of the different levels of the kids. They all eventually get to the same place, and by grade 4 they are doing reading as an entire homeroom.

NP: Class size grows in upper grades at 158. I think the 4th and 5th grade classes are 30+, so no different than 290. The principal at 158 is tough and test-obsessed, much prefer the atmosphere and approach at 290.

well, unless you see the WL letter, don't believe what everyone tells you. often people lie about getting WL when they get RJ. this happens at all TT privates. my BF lied to my face about getting WL from my DC's school, not SA. the RJ letter was sitting on their dining table. my SIL lied to our family about getting WL at SA. my brother told us that they were RJed.

when you say "everyone gets WL from SA" what do you expect the other family to reply? if they say that they got RJ from SA, then they run the risk of being labeled the only RJ from SA. it's hard to admit RJ when everyone else is yelling WLs.

the initial 60 sounds like 2 age groups with 2 classes of 15 in each. So 30 kids, then they add one class which could mean 25 new kids assuming a few don't stay from pre-school, or it could mean adding 20. So 50 kids in K. Then 75 in First.

SA parent here. Approx. 60 spots (3 classes of 20) in K. 30 spots come from the two preschool classes of 15 each. So you have around 30 spots for K. Add another class of 20 in 1st. 80 in each SA class (4 classes of 80) from 1st through 12th. Actual number differs a bit from year to year.

Sometimes, but there is no obligation. You can speak to your child's teacher at any point. But one of the past aspects of the school is that it focuses on the needs of the students, not the paranoia of the parents.

Various drawings, show and tells to prepare, and photo collages/etc. spread out through the school year to be done with parents' help (total of about 5). Private school, obviously.

Do they assign the books or check that you have done it? Our school tells us to read and I would do it regardless, but they certainly don't keep tabs on whether we do it or not, so I see it as a suggestion rather than an assignment.

Really? You think shoving whatever you're interested down a 5 yo's throat is a way to encourage a love of reading (and encourage them to actually read for pleasure themselves)? Different strokes, I guess. Whatever my 5yo wants me to read, I read! Sure, I offer suggestions, but he picks.

1/2 hr, so I get home at 6:30, we start homework @ 7:00, then dinner and then it's time to start bedtime routine. On nights when he doesn't have homework, he cooks dinner with me, helps with the laundry, helps with the garden, or helps dh "fix" something. I just don't feel it's useful at this stage.

He's too tired by that time. I don't want him to half-ass it. Handwriting neatness, capitalization and punctuation are all going to suffer at 8:00. If he's going to do it I want him to do it correctly otherwise there's no benefit.

ITA. It's especially unreasonable (and detrimental) for families where both parents work. IMO, Kindergarteners should really be in bed by 7:30 or so, and that doesn't seem possible if parents have to cram in homework and dinner after they return from work.

Sure, i'm a SAHM, so have no problem with it. But i imagine it being a problem if time were so scarse. I'm not working mainly because of the time poverty we would have and kids benefit from spending time with them. We are saving enough on 1 income thanks to saving on housing.

its so dumb to give hw to kids who can't do their own homework. And really intrusive on family life as it requires an adult to sit there and do it with the kid to the detriment of whatever else that adult has to do (tend to other children, prepare meals, do work, household chores, etc).

Most DCs in private schools do take the ELAs, but no one makes much of a fuss about them. The school's funding and status doesn't correlate to the exam results - they are mostly for internal benchmarking purposes and to teach the DCs how to take a standardized test.

np--This is not correct, unless by private you mean parochial. Most NYC independent schools do not have kids take the ELA. Many do give another test, the CTP4, from 3rd grade on though. This is a low-stakes assessment of child and school and should not be prepared for.

Can you specify what you mean by "piling on the homework" in K? No flaming, I just want to see how it compares to DD's current private HW load

Yes, my kindergarten dc has about 4-5 pages of homework to do when he gets home during the week plus recommended reading of 10-20 minutes every night (for which he needs to fill out a sheet), and about 8 to 10 pages over a weekend plus reading. He is already in an extended academic day (the way the school works) so this means that he is not getting home til about 6. It is a marathon every night to fit in dinner, HW, bath and bedtime rituals-- he has almost no down time during the week. And he's 5. Personally, I think it's a bit much.

Depends on the school: some are known as rigorous, and some are for less-academic kids. Just like public.

I did not mean it literally. Of course there are classes and teachers and buildings! But I went to HM/Trinity (being cagey about which, but suffice it to say that I didn't have a great experience) and my stepkid goes to BWL. In terms of what OP is inquiring about -- pressure, demands, academic rigor -- they are as similar as Princeton and Montclair College.

When our dcs were in K through 3rd grade at a "tt" ongoing, they had a much easier time of it than their friends who were in public schools. Our dc had a lot more time for playdates, weekend activities like museums and trips out of the city, extracurricular classes, reading and relaxing, etc. In 3rd grade was where we began to see a shift, and our dcs' workload began to catch up with their friends' in public. By 5th grade our kids were working harder than their friends in public, and the content of the material being learned in most subjects was years ahead of their public school friends. Now our oldest is in high school and the trend still holds, except for her friends who ended up at selective publics like Stuy or Hunter.

might just be your dc. we're at a top gen ed and dc is doing well. he's challenged but just enough. agree with other posters that private is less academic in the early years but then ratchets up. if dc can't handle it now there aren't a whole lot of options in the long term unless you look into some of the downtown progressives.

The least competitive private is BWL. They will not be piling on the homework nor, pushing your child to do much. However, since it is not an academic school, exmissions tend to be inferior when compared with the other privates. You cannot have it both ways. If you are looking or a lax school, your child will suffer the consequences.

We stayed in public, but I know that about a quarter of the kids in PS290 and PS6 went to private middle school: the guidance counselors are willing to help and the school doesn't act as though there's anything right or wrong with it.

PS24 in Riverdale regularly sends around 1/2 dozen kids to HM, usually diversity and/or SoH alums. Fieldston and RC are for some reason reluctant to take more than 1-2.

This is true at any school where the culture prizes admission to top colleges, whether it is HM, Trinity, Dalton, or Saint Anns. Better to be an A+ at one academic subject and one extracurricular than to be an A- at a lot of things.

NP: What I know about friends from having a ton of friends choose it for their dc is that it is a school with a wide mix in every possible way. It has some crazy smart dc, some pretty dim dc; some really great teachers, some really lame teachers, and so on. People choose it for the relaxed vibe and the location, not for the academics or the peer group. It's a nice neighborhood school with all that this implies.

Friends peer group is far more mixed then other schools we have been at. Why? We have no idea. The group is very "quirky" is the word typically used. Those kids also stay at the school longest. The more "regular" kids tend to leave. Or at least the very bright ones. The group that the HS brings in seems stronger then those that come in at K.

Many kids from our pre-school go to Friends, and I would say the kids are very mixed. One family is media celebrity and kid is nice but not exceptional in any way, one is rowdy and not a higher tester but parent has Quaker background, third kid is bright, high-strung child of academics, fourth kid kid (unconnected) is super-mature and compliant. I bet this is a clear reflection of the school. All are white, and all are full-pay, btw, except academics' kid, and the university pays 70% of tuition.

There is a family in our junior Kindergarten, and their daughter was not accepted at any private but Friends. They really wanted a SS conservative/traditional school. Their dream school was Spence. And, the father walks around telling everyone how he is so unhappy about his daughter entering Kindergarten at Friends this coming fall. The father is so obnoxious and rude to everyone. I guess, Friends has a real problem with their admissions department, as they accepted this family this rude and obnoxious family that is so unhappy. Harriet didn't even interview them! I think it was the new admissions assistant, as this family even said how their interview was horrible, yet they were accepted. At the same time, there was an ethnically diverse family in our class that was rejected by Friend and, this family would have really embraced the school. This ethnically diverse family would have been a perfect fit as, they are really nice, outgoing and, they are extremely active in our current junior kindergarten. As a parent with a second child entering Kindergarten at Friends this Fall, I am appalled at how Friends treated the ethnically diverse family and, it makes my family question how Friends operates.

OMG I know the exact family you are speaking of. They hate it but it is the only school that accepted them. HORRIBLE!

You should question it. As an ex friends family we wish we had gotten out sooner. Not all privates are the same. Lesson learned.

A family that lives near us in the suburbs use to go to Friends. They said they left the city because they were not happy there. These people have been on the front page of the city papers for having a nanny that they brutalized. Not very quakerly?

I think they're just being cordial. You're at the beginning of the process. She's not accepted YET. However, I think it's a nice touch that things from the conversation were mentioned, that personalizes it.

For now they're just being cordial. Some of the boarding schools have to reach out a little more to get interest in being part of their application base. Boarding school's not like college, though. I went to a small boarding school known for being experimental, on full FA, as an academic prospect. The school sent a lot of girls to 7 sisters, has strong drama and music, and many girls from wealthy NYC families who for whatever reason didn't go TT. Anyway, it was not really an "academic" school. As a result, at college admissions time, I got in everywhere I applied and chose Yale. There were only three students in my class who even applied to Yale. Andover has well over 100 students a year apply to Yale. Don't discount the smaller boarding schools that may market themselves to you.

Andover has roughly 300 students per graduating class and more than a third go ivy. Doesn't effect chances very much, if anything betters them IMO.

But roughly 200 other students who would be equally qualified to do well at Ivy, don't go Ivy. Every single student at Andover could go Ivy and do well. They've been pre-screened. However, 2/3 of the class gets edged out of the chance. Take any one of those students and stick them at Andover High or even North Andover High and they'd be in.

np: I went to Exeter, so similar school and this is simply not true. Most kids at these schools are smart, but some really don't rise to the occasion. Not all would get into Ivy if they hadn't gone to TT boarding school. That said, certainly SOME of them would have.

Wish I could say, but I could be pretty easily outed that route. I just wanted to give a boost to the schools at these fairs that take the time to reach out. I had a great boarding school experience and truly, fully credit this school with my college admission because if Harvard or Stanford or Georgetown etc. (pretty much anywhere I wanted to go) was going to take one student from my graduating class, it was going to be me. It's an ongoing issue with TT as well. But whatever, it's the perennial argument here on UB. You're just not going to change my mind on the subject, and no way, I did not send any of my kids TT and one's going Ivy in the fall now (not the one I attended) because I made him the biggest fish I could in a smaller pond.

It seems to be very popular among the girls' SS as well though. Maybe even more so than the boys'. I'd say the that the most stay at Brearley, most leave at Spence. I have a DD at Spence and the most popular boarding schools seem to be Deerfield, Andover, Exeter, and Groton.

at B this year, there are 12 girls leaving out of 60 or so. At least 5-6 are going to co-ed in the city ( not boarding) Trinity, Riverdale and Stuyvesant.

I have a question: I know district assignments are handed out in school - but what about citywides like nest and anderson? Do they mail them to your house or do it thru school?

I assume it is one letter, but what do I know? Is your school mailing the letters home or are you going in to pick them up?

That sounds horrible. Do kids rip them open and start comparing outcomes before they are home?

Why is that horrible - yes, some children open them but it really doesn't matter - the children are wonderful and not hyper competitive. They all find out who is going where anyway. Why makes this something hush hush negative emotion wrought? It's not.

don't know about anderson, but at nest they ask for a stamped self-addressed envelope when you go take the test, and they send the news home in that.
