That's awesome and it validates what I believed all along..parenting really is the other 1/2 of a child's academic success. I went to a state college and a food chunk if my college dorm-mates were students from Stuyvesant, Cooper Union, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech- and I remember feeling like absolute crap when I got rejected from Stuy...lol. Seriously, it's not where you come from but where you are going that matters. You should celebrate!

Why is that sad? That's the real reason that ivy league educations are important, for example, not the actual education (there are fabulously credentialed professors at even midlevel colleges these days). Networking and connections are why white umc men dominated the world for so long, and why it's great that ivy league schools now are so diverse. Those kids also deserve to make contacts. You're kind of naive

Well, you must be in a field where they recruit, like Wall Street or a corporate job. If you're in the media or a creative field, knowing people who can get you internships or entry level jobs is crucial.

Your dc should be proud of herself/himself. As for you, it is shallow, but as long as you acknowledge that, then I don't think feeling that way is hurting anybody. But just remember: you probably wasted a lot of energy over the years feeling envious when you should have just let it go. And if things hadn't turned out the way they did, you'd still feel envious. If you have another dc, don't repeat that cycle.

Not to harsh your mellow, and I really do hope for the best for your dd, but just because they ended up at the same college doesn't mean they'll have the same experience while they're there or that they will have similar outcomes afterward. BTDT as a student from a mediocre educational background who ended up at a top college. I was simply NOT prepared for a lot of the college coursework, and I often struggled. My classmates who had always gone to top schools had a breadth and depth to their pre-college education that mine didn't come close to. I'm sorry to sound so negative. I hope your dd's experience is better than mine was, and you're right to be proud of her and feel good.

OP: That may have been your experience, but my kid didn't have a mediocre educational background. DC went to a specialized high, is a concert level musician and plays a varsity sport. And we took the money we saved by not scrimping to send dc to private and went all over the world with him. I think dc will do just fine at college.

OP: well, I think it probably is easier, if you get a TT private education, and I admitted up front that there is a part of me that always felt bad that we couldn't afford it. But fwiw, my kid just laughed when I admitted that recently. He has lots of friends at tts, and he's considered the model of coolness the true intellectual. They tend to follow his lead, think he's the maestro. I may have all sorts of insecurity about it, by he has none of that.

To be considered for the SP program you needed a 3.0 or above on Math and ELA this year (next year may change). I don't know what the "inside" cutoff is. Last year some people who put Wagner SP third choice were offered a spot. I don't know about this year. We put it as first choice (with medium/high 4's)

You need to ask the schools. There won't be hard cutoffs for those scores, and most don't even have cutoffs. The selective ones usually have their own tests and interviews which they rely on.

I would try and get your current 5th grade class to start a list. You really only care about your own school. Some mom's in my school started this a few years ago and each year a 5th grade parents completes it as much as possible and then hands on to a 4th grade family.

Too much revealing info. That being said, test scores get you in the game but aren't the be all and end all. Lateness, attendance, punctuality, report card , teaher comments as well as how they fill out recommnedation form (numbers 1-5 in terms of academic ability, behavior, etc)and the schools own assessment (at least in district 2 the majority of schools have them) are important.

np. ITA. If you drop the elementary school they are coming from, you might get a response. Too much identifying info otherwise. I also don't get the obsession with test scores. They are just part of the process. They are used more to determine cut offs to weed out candidates and they change from year to year. I have a child in middle school, and I would not answer this question the way you put it if I had a 5th grader.

Aristotle circle workbook, go on the erb website and look at the practice questions, brain quest, buy blocks with geometric designs make something and ask dc to copy. Buy workbooks that have sequencing, mazes, connect the dots, what doesn't belong, compete the picture, ask dc to draw a pic of themselves and make sure they draw details like eyebrows. Read them a story and ask them to comment, practice rhyming. All these activities will help for the erbs and playdates.

Crazy in the sense that people don't rank TAG 1st (hopefully) or just an odd order? TAG and LL are the most convenient geographically, and I really liked TAG. I ranked it over LL because I want to be able to move out of the district, and I thought Anderson was ok, but not amazing.

The education at the "non-TT" (a term which I loathe) is just as good as at the schools you mention. It is also about the entire experience. Believe me, no one (except on this board) sits around judging you if you want to Taft vs. Hotchkiss. Apply to a variety.

I have thought about this too. Unless dc had academic issues (and I see no reason in your post to believe this), I would think hard about moving from a more academic to a less academic environment (regardless of whether boarding or otherwise). On your list were basicallt TT NYC and boarding schools. You also said you were applying to "other coeds in the city" as back-ups. Therefore, I would think you'd also apply to a couple of boarding schools as back-ups. I suspect it's your slight adversity to boarding school that is making you not want to do that. Frankly, your dd is applying to over a dozen schools. If she and dh want to add a couple of boarding school back ups, that does make sense. With that said, I'm with you, I'd send dd to Exeter without hesitation, but I'm not sure that non-TT boarding school is the route I'd want for dc.

I feel the same way about NYC privates. Dd is in prek and honestly I will only send to private if she gets into one of the higher tier schools. No way am I spending 40k a year for a mediocre private. Dh went through NYC public school system and he is extremely successful so we have no issues with public options. I wonder how psd's feel when they hear this?

I think you are correct to want only a top boarding school. However, your list omits Lawrenceville and Hotchkiss and maybe even St. Andrews. These schools and some of those you list as not TT are far superior in academics and college placement than BWL. Also, no way are Trinity and Dalton back ups for anyone except maybe Obama's kids.

Makes sense. We are looking at this now from a SS with very high standards and I am surprised how excellent the academics are at boarding schools below Exeter and Andover. There really are some great places. Be a bit open minded about what is a top boarding school, especially compared to BWL, Trevor.

Dalton is a real long shot. They take a relatively small number in 9th grade compared to other coeds, and the ones I've heard of from girls' ss schools generally have siblings (boys) already at Dalton.

DD is not very interested in coeds in the city, DH and I want her to apply though. We're not really expecting to get in, but thought we'd apply, because it might be a good option if she did get in. She's pretty much in love with Exeter and Deerfield right now though, so praying that she gets into at least one of them.

to me, bs is only worth the money if it offers an amazing education. that said, if the money is negligible to you, your dh is right that kids can get a lot from the boarding experience in and of itself. Think summer camp - beautiful, rural setting, friendships formed over late night heart-to-hearts in the dorm, a safe place to be increasingly independent. My parents would only allow me to apply to bs's that were better than my day school, and it worked out, but I think a lot of what I loved about my school would have been true at less prestigious ones as well.

I have a child who is working very hard at a boarding school not on your list. Very smart kids are challenged at the school. I don't think you and some of the above posters understand education. Teachers work hard to help kids improve (especially in the small classrooms of most boarding schools). It's fine if you don't want to apply to some schools, but don't do it on the assumption that these schools will not challenge your child.

I know families at those schools who have looked at boarding schools and then decided to stay at the ss in the city, allowing the girl to sign up for a semester or year abroad in 11th grade as the compromise. -np

Ultimately, it depends on which type of high school experience your DD wants. Might be smart to have a range of schools to have most options.

As of now, DD loves Exeter and Deerfield. She's made straight As since fifth grade and plays soccer and lacrosse. We know how competitive it is, but I'm praying that she gets into at least one of the boarding schools that she wants to go to, especially Deerfield or Exeter since she, DH, and I all seem to be in such agreement on them.

I went to a TT boarding school and over the years have many friends who went to a variety of other boarding schools. IMO, while there are boarding schools that really cater to kids who are less academically inclined, not sure the ones you mention fall into this category. I know a brilliant woman who went to Taft for example and my top 15 college had many grads from Milton, Kent, Hotchkiss. I don't feel that those schools or say Lawrenceville or even Loomis would be on par with BWL in the city, which definitely caters to students who need a less academically competitive environment.

We have a house in the area near Kent and have kids at Hotchkiss. I would say that Kent is on par with Trevor or perhaps Columbia Prep academically, but ethos-wise it's like a co-ed Buckley. Tres preppy

There is a special quality to a Quaker education that I would love for DC to experience. I don't think it's still there at Friends Seminary, and I don't think we'll send DC to boarding school, but if we were, George and Westtown would be at the top of our list.

NP - On UB, many people have a lot of hate regarding private schools, believing that certain schools at the lower end are not worth the money. Whether or not this is based in fact, is there a similar informal "tier system", for lack of a better word, in boarding schools?

only fallout from the lawsuit will be that the city is forced to add more citywide seats, the WSJ asked a DOE rep why they hadn't already, the DOE responded that they would love to but there just isn't enough room - cue to 24 new non-DOE charters opened up this year alone - nothing against charters - but this no room non-sense for a school that could be ostensibly offered anywhere in city limits is a ruse.

they could throw a school or two at G&T without much issue, the priority seems to have gone well beyond providing alternatives to parents with bad schools (which G&T does as well) to union busting, why else would charters be placed on the UWS, Cobble Hill, Union Square and at the same time turn away hundreds of families looking for accelerated education for their children?

Anderson tried to expand a few years ago because there was plenty of room in the building. But 2 neighboring schools, 87 and 199, took that space (which had been promised to Anderson as part of the DOE's inducement to get Anderson to leave the PS 9 bldg) for their overflow and created PS 452 .... which admits plenty of non-zoned kids every year.

This is completely unfeasible, logistically and otherwise. It is also like making special ed students who attend special schools paid for by the DOE "re-test" every year to prove that they're still dyslexic, autistic or otherwise learning disabled. Where would the annual g&t "rejects" be sent when most zoned schools are already oversubscribed? Would they get guaranteed placement elsewhere? This is just a dumb suggestion.

I don't know about retesting, but there should be a minimum grades the students need to maintain - right now once you are in at 4 you are in until 8th or 12th grade depending at the school.

Have a kid at citywide. From what I can see, the school is monitoring academic progress of every student starting in K and will be forthright with parents when they think a child would be better suited elsewhere. It seems these types of transitions happen during the K year or around 4th-5th grade.
