A big part of it is disposable income. Parents with kids in NYC and SF are likely making higher salaries and can afford the 40k+ tuition that these schools charge. If you go to the midwest, there might be some good jobs but the pay scales are lower because COL is so much lower. In addition, these cities draw the liberal, educated types that are likely to find value in prestigious educations. [ Reply | More

My 6th grader has taken the subway there since day one. I went with him for a few weeks, and then he went by himself. In the Preppy Handbook (remember that?) Lawrenceville was named the "preppy center of the universe" because of its proximity to Princeton I think.
