I can't speak about SF but I was shocked at how many parents in NYC are willing to send their young children away on sleep away camps and travel so much for school

A big part of it is disposable income. Parents with kids in NYC and SF are likely making higher salaries and can afford the 40k+ tuition that these schools charge. If you go to the midwest, there might be some good jobs but the pay scales are lower because COL is so much lower. In addition, these cities draw the liberal, educated types that are likely to find value in prestigious educations.

Which school? NYC I can understand--wanting the kid to experience the outdoors. SF publics not good, lots of money there...not sure why else. Maybe parents want to expose them to east coast striver culture?

Lots of money in those cities. Private schools are already 40,000 grand in those cities, so not much more to sent away for boarding school.

Typical UB parents don't represent reality. My dc has performed with his Orchestra an assembly at for Wagner for the students which I also attended, and I found the school and the children to be quite pleasant and well behaved. Nothing like what I expected based on the talk about this school from UB posters.

I didn't mean to post this on the thank you note. There are some neat teacher gift ideas on Pinterest. Something cute like that with a Starbucks or Bath & Body Works gift cert or something like that is nice. Cash or AMEX card is VERY impersonal, and I really don't think appropriate to give a teacher. They are not your hired help.

DD is in fifth grade at one of the above schools. I know that over the past few years it's been getting more and more popular to go to boarding school, I was just wondering if any moms could say how many eighth grade girls would be going to BS next year/ How many went in their DDs grade when they were in eighth grade.

I'll add that it is great for the girls who go to be somewhere new and it is even better for the girls who stay to have fresh faces in the grade. It all gets kind of tired after nine years with the same 50 girls. -signed TT SS grad.

it is commonly referred to as "LAB". Your child can take whatever mode of transpo to and from - does not have to be the same both ways. Many students stay after school

NP: I realize you think a school bus is easier for commute - but it doesn't end up that way. It takes forever!!! A citybus is just as safe - hard to believe but your middle school child will most likely take subway by 7th grade anyway. The E might work depending on where you live.

They provide some busing for 6th grade students, but there has to be critical mass of kids in a certain area in order to get it. The school bus is probably slower than public transportation. My 6th grader has taken the subway there since day one. I went with him for a few weeks, and then he went by himself. He often commutes with friends part of the way since everyone is traveling at the same time.

I am asuming that she doesn't play a school sport (ie she's an ice skater or fencer, for example). PCS is almost like home school ing but less effort form the kids. Kids who already earn a full time living. I would home school if you and she a interested in college.

Trinity. For unconnected DCs, it's almost impossible - only a handful of seats a year.

I've heard this as well. Weird though, because I feel like I meet way more families who want Dalton, Brearley, or Collegiate, but maybe it's because they now Trinity is a long shot anyways? What do you think?

I think you are right. You either have a connection at Trinity (and there aren't many of those) or you have a first choice elsewhere.

TTs are based on college exmissions. Since they don't have a high school, they have nothing to base it on. TTs are Brearley, Chapin, Spence, Dalton, HM, Trinity, and Collegiate.

Probably Trinity. Horace Mann only has 30-35 K spots. While many sibs and legacacues are already in nursery, there are still many legacies that apply for K because that didn't make the bday cutoff for HM nursery school.

Probably Trinity overall, but many schools have years where there are virtually no spots. In our ongoing--a school many people knock on here--my dd's K year had a total of 5 open spots.

In the Preppy Handbook (remember that?) Lawrenceville was named the "preppy center of the universe" because of its proximity to Princeton I think. I'm from that area, and it is a very preppy school in the most authentic way -- everyone in boat shoes, polo shirts, khakis, playing tennis, squash, shooting skeet, etc.

^^ though I would not call Lawrenceville "striverish" in any way. Just real, old-fashioned preppy.

DH went there--it was preppy but not at all striver-ish, you're right. Those families arrived years ago, they're not striving for anything.

St. George's. It's crazy preppy. The other preppy ones, like Groton and St. Pauls aren't striver-y, they're arriver-y.

That's what they said but I am concerned that they may have changed that since the letter came straight from the DOE vs the self addressed envelope that I left with them when my DC took the test.

Why don't you work to change the system instead of pursuing a frivolous lawsuit that will only cost taxpayers and will do nothing to help kids? Lobby for more school funding. Donate your time to your local school.

ITA. G&T is popular because there are so few good gen eds, and some districts have no decent schools. This may not be true in Manhattan, but is in some outer boroughs districts. DOE is now refusing to provide bus service between districts.
