Depends on each school's admissions. HM and Brearley usually have a number of openings for 6th and 7th, Dalton accepts a handful of new kids in 6th and won't even accept a 7th grade application, SA depends on attrition and will hold the application until they know about openings, Trinity may have no openings or just a few for 6th or 7th. HM has the best odds since they take around 40 new kids for 6th and maybe 20 for 7th. All the above schools want good students and connections are not that important. [ Reply | More ]

Again, this a culture bias. Some people come from a culture of boarding schools, and demeaning them is a lot like them being dismissive of your "child raising" or what they might conceive of as "over-protective" and "controlling." Remember, there are some cultures in which sending kids away to college is regarded as barbaric and family-fracturing." Would you be so nasty about those cultural difference? Also, in our public middle, several kids opted to go away to boarding school and every single one of was a superb athlete and scholar who BEGGED their parents to let them go. It was hard for their parents (one is my bff), but their kids made good arguments, and in one case, got herself a fabulous scholarship. All I am say9ing is that this is nuanced discussion. At least the sophisticated among us think so.... [ Reply | More ]

A big part of it is disposable income. Parents with kids in NYC and SF are likely making higher salaries and can afford the 40k+ tuition that these schools charge. If you go to the midwest, there might be some good jobs but the pay scales are lower because COL is so much lower. In addition, these cities draw the liberal, educated types that are likely to find value in prestigious educations. [ Reply | More ]

Typical UB parents don't represent reality. My dc has performed with his Orchestra an assembly at for Wagner for the students which I also attended, and I found the school and the children to be quite pleasant and well behaved. Nothing like what I expected based on the talk about this school from UB posters. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't mean to post this on the thank you note. There are some neat teacher gift ideas on Pinterest. Something cute like that with a Starbucks or Bath & Body Works gift cert or something like that is nice. Cash or AMEX card is VERY impersonal, and I really don't think appropriate to give a teacher. They are not your hired help. [ Reply | More ]

Most Preschool teachers make very little--I think if you can afford it, it's nice to give a gift card. We give either Am-ex or things like Amazon gift cards. [ Reply | More ]

...and if you can't afford it, its ok. A thoughtful note where you actually thank them for specific things that were meaningful for your child or family, that you learned from or with them, etc. I know many teachers (my mom and quite a few friends) and while of course they enjoy generous gifts, they really do love the kids they work with and appreciate a genuine note of thanks. DD is in fifth grade at one of the above schools. I know that over the past few years it's been getting more and more popular to go to boarding school, I was just wondering if any moms could say how many eighth grade girls would be going to BS next year/ How many went in their DDs grade when they were in eighth grade. I'll add that it is great for the girls who go to be somewhere new and it is even better for the girls who stay to have fresh faces in the grade. It all gets kind of tired after nine years with the same 50 girls. -signed TT SS grad. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Someone wrote about a private bus that takes kids to middle lab in chelsea from the UES. How does that work? Are there certain bus stops where they pick up the kids? it is commonly referred to as "LAB". Your child can take whatever mode of transpo to and from - does not have to be the same both ways. Many students stay after school [ Reply | More ]

NP: I realize you think a school bus is easier for commute - but it doesn't end up that way. It takes forever!!! A citybus is just as safe - hard to believe but your middle school child will most likely take subway by 7th grade anyway. The E might work depending on where you live. [ Reply | More ]

They provide some busing for 6th grade students, but there has to be critical mass of kids in a certain area in order to get it. The school bus is probably slower than public transportation. My 6th grader has taken the subway there since day one. I went with him for a few weeks, and then he went by himself. He often commutes with friends part of the way since everyone is traveling at the same time. [ Reply | More ]
