Congrats! Wish I could say the same in a few years. Q, it seemed more like a private school (atmosphere and size). Did DD want that or did DD want a big school? My DD wants a big school after being with the same kids in a private. We think UVA would be the perfect balance where it's big enough for DD and has academics good enough for DH and I love the environment/vibe/campus.

As a number that's impressive, but the graduating class is only 45 girls. Factoring in connections and diversity, that really should be the standard number at a school with a very small graduating class.

It's hard getting in anywhere in my opinion... if you take the nursery spot then you probably have an option of staying if you like the school, and can apply outside as well, unless they frown upon that. You do need good school reports from teachers etc..

Why do you think it a weak link. For my experience (4 or 5 friends kids there), the parents all love it. Ad it's NURSERY - you learn to play nice, say your name, and about airplanes!

No. I'd apply elsewhere for nursery and then put Horace Mann in the mix for k applications. So you can compare it and have a psd. Problem is, if k's know dh is an alum there they might be hesitant to take dc for fear dc will just go there.

Agree. I know many legacies who were rejected/waitlisted for the nursery, including legacies who were involved with the school. Don't assume you'd get in as MANY legacies don't for the preschool. However, if you apply for the 3s, then Pre-K, then K, you are in a much better position for K admissions, as they know you were really interested and as a legacy that helps that you keep applying.

If you really want to have DD go elsewhere, I wouldn't bother. It's 42K which isn't worth spending if you don't plan on staying. The whole point is to observe the who K madness, so why apply if you don't think you would stay? There are so many alumni (and non-legacies) who would love that spot for their child and do plan to stay. And don't count on having a "pretty good shot" of getting in just because DH is an alumni. You have a much better shot than the general pool, but there are way too many legacies and siblings for the number of spots they have....

I don't think it makes sense to attend a nursery at an ongoing shcool if you don't at least plan to stay there. Applying out will be harder as you won't get any help AND you will have to work to convince shcools that you really plan on leaving and as a legacy at that school, that will already be harder to convinve them of.

np: i know that the process is unfair and it sucked especially this year, but a lawsuit is ridiculous. especially when you read about the parent - how his kid got a perfect 99 (highest scores on both tests) and thinks its unfair that DC doesnt get first choice. i dont disagree with the statement, but to hold up the entire process is ridiculous. especially when the parent is a math professor and should know that statistically, a perfect 99 is not significantly different from a "regular" 99 or even a 97 kid. ugh!

It's for the late testers and the remaining spots are given to interested families. The DOE calls up families that listed NEST but didn't get in and offers the seats to them.

Horace Mann gets bashed, Hunter gets bashed, Dalton gets bashed, Stuyvesant gets bashed, Spence gets bashed, G&T programs gets bashed...and then you've got schools like Riverdale, Mandell, Avenues and Dwight that really get bashed. I don't notice an anti-catholic biased here.

It is very simple. MM and CSH are two of only seven SS girl schools in Manhattan (so almost 30% of the supply) and they are virtually off limits to half the population - not necessarily because they would not accept non Christians but because non Christians would not dream to send their kids there. Hence, the bashing. I can assure you that if all of a sudden these school became non religious they would not be criticized on UB.

I have a friend for whom MM was hands down her first choice. I have another friend who only applied to St Ignatius Loyola for her kids. I don't think IRL either was criticized. UB is not the real world. And FWIW, people on UB seem to like St David's which is also Catholic...

i hope they at least have to change the name of the program. something like rich and prepared instead of gifted and talented should do nicely. or perhaps simply "talented" without the gifted.
i mean seriously: these tykes are neither gifted nor talented. they are simply prepared 4 and 5 year olds, most likely because of parental involvement. they don't have any more gifted bones in their bodies than the common 4 and 5 year old. sickening, the whole thing.

Do you feel it reflects badly on your child that he didn't receive that "label"? I wouldn't worry about it. Most parents with kids who test in realize their kid isn't a genius-- they are only looking for a better school option for their children (just like you-- you chose a school outside your zone, right?)

What is the truth? Is it that a kid who got a close to perfect score has the same capacity as a kid who scored in the 50th percentile? They are equally capable of learning at the same pace? Or is the truth that most kids prepped for the test, and are therefore not gifted due to prepping?

I posted below with a similar question. Everyone seems so convinced that the test is total bs, and can't determine giftedness, AND that the kids who scored 99 are NOT gifted. I don't disagree that the DOE needs to spend more resources on improving gened, but why the vitriol?

I am one of those who think the whole program is not necessary. DC is maybe a bit above average but hard working and extremely good in certain areas. With some prep scored 99. Is she gifted? Absolutely not. I believe G&T takes up resources that could be used on improving the gen ed schools. And when kids attend their zoned schools, parents will focus on working to improve them, not prep with tutors at $100 per class. Did you know people are already prepping for next year's test?

Didn't test, attend a great choice gen ed. Our zoned schools sucks. I'm the first to admit that if the choice school didn't exist all of us hyper-involved parents would have kicked the local gen ed into shape years ago. The problem is as long as there are options parents aren't going to be forced to do this, and I wasn't going to go and be the only one on principal. So maybe I'm a hypocrite, but I still beleive the G&T system has to go!

They usually fall into one of three camps: 1. their kid didn't test in; 2. they live in zone for 321, 6, 234, burbs, etc., and they think it's fine for real estate to weed out lots of kids, but not a test; 3. 'progressives' whose politics align with the UFT's and who are threatened by ANY choice.

its not the kids who are sickening, its the system and process. G&T is nothing but a mechanism for rich, priveledge kids (IN GENERAL) to separate from poorer students. that is all it is. its disguised as a haven for special gifted children who i guess are so special that they need to separate from the common muck, but in reality, it is nothing of the sort.

I don't know about that. I visited TAG, which looks extremely diverse. They are doing accelerated work. The truth is that a lot of kids in regular gened would not be able to keep up with the pace at a citywide. Why not have a program for kids who are capable of moving at a quicker pace?

I've posted about this before--district g&ts are usually placed into less desirable schools. The closest one to us in is a Title I (high poverty) school with a high minority population. We chose it over our 95+% white very well-funded gen-ed. Do your research.

I don't know if I would call it sickening, but they do need to make a change. I'm just curious. Why are people so convinced that the test itself has no value in determining at least some level of giftedness? Is everyone just against it for the sake of being against it, or has everyone done research on the validity of these tests?

I didn't make up the term "gifted", but from what I have seen on the citywide tours, the kids in these programs are able to work at an accelerated pace. They can keep up and have a greater capacity to understand and process the work. It is the gift of comprehension, reasoning, memory, etc.

Lawyer mom (and citywide parent): I haven't read the complaint so I don't know what specific laws are alleged to have been violated; my understanding is the plaintiffs allege the sibling policy is unfair. But the G&T program is a non-mandatory programming option that is made available to families. It is entirely optional. The DOE has a lot of discretion in managing this type of program. The DOE initially narrowly curtailed the sib preference in October and then reversed itself, reinstituting the preference in December... BEFORE any child took the G&T test. So the plaintiffs knew what the placement methodology would be when their children took the test. The DOE will win this lawsuit. That said, I would predict there will be big changes in the entire G&T program/structure in the next few years. I think the sibling preference is vulnerable (it may remain in some form but not what it currently is). With the outgoing administration and this being an election year, anything could happen although the more political changes may be another year away.

OR here: I actually don't think the filing of this complaint is holding anything up. Before this claim was filed, the DOE had said they would send out placements around June 17. I don't know what immediate relief the Plaintiffs are seeking here, but we'll see what happens on June 7.

agree but not sure about sib policy. it's a slippery slope. if you change it for g&t, then wl people at top gen eds will want it changed at gen eds. and then the doe would have a total shitstorm on its hands. not saying it couldn't happen. but don't hold your breath.

OR: but gen eds do not have selective admissions, whereas G&T programs do. Even in the G&T programs, sibs do not get in unless they meet a baseline qualification requirement. A good argument could be made that, under the current system, the sib preference should be limited to 99 sibs, since in the non-sib universe, only 99s have a chance at a citywide seat. But I have a feeling this is the last year of the G&T program as we currently know it. It will likely change a lot by next fall.

But does he expect that the judge will be so skilled in statistics as to agree that his score calculations (which obviously benefit his daughter) are better than the DOE's score calculations? The judge will look to expert statisticians to give their opinion. At best, some will agree with this guy, and others with the DOE. So the judge will decide that the DOE's way is reasonable, and throw out the case, right?

Wouldn't judge anything based on the high school. Many kids decide to move elsewhere for high school, as their K - 12 class feels stagnating to them by then, moving on to Stuy, Laguardia, etc or other privates. Base your feelings on the elementary school. Seems to me you have a lot of reasons to look seriously at this one so make sure your reasons for pushing elsewhere, where you will not have as good a chance in a very tight environment, are stellar ones and not based on silly UB status. You can only first choice in one place,

Forget what schools you like and what school your husband likes: Where will your daughter do best? If your husband's school is a better fit for her, she should go there regardless of whether or not you like it. If she seems to take really well to, say, Chapin, then of course she should go there.

you actually can't do this at most schools. siblings and legacies apply for "early notification" and find out in december before the general admissions process. so she can't just play out the options without signalling to the family that she is not as interested in their beloved alma mater as they are.

OP is in a good place, actually, because Dwight is generally considered a very undesirable school. Her PSD will support doing regular admission everywhere else, and other schools will take the application and the family's declarations of interest seriously (which, honestly, they wouldn't if the dc were a legacy at Dalton or Trinity). The dc will certainly get into Dwight regardless.

Honestly I'm sure there are some nice families at this school, there are at almost any school, but the people I have met just seem so arrogant about money and status, basically a school of strivers for lack of better term and their children seem to take after them on this.

The problem with less competitive schools like Dwight or BWL is that there is much less diversity than at tt schools, and thus I think OP is right about the sort of people. Places like Dalton or Brearley try very strenuously to make sure there are at least a signif contingent of full-pay, super high performing, non connected kids in addition to the rich, connected kids and the kids on FA. At our schools I know well, I bet 1/4 of the families fit that mold. At, say Dwight or BWL, there aren't that many rich-enough-to-pay-but-poor-enough-so-it-hurts families. The schools aren't academically compelling enough to make that sacrifice, you know? So IME, families at those schools tend to be either quite rich or obscenely rich. The sort for whom it's private do-or-die.

Sorry, but I don't consider very rich international families "diverse." But you're right Dwight has many non-American families. As for their 40% FA, I absolutely don't buy it.And that # is bs anyway. They are privately held and for-profit, so I really doubt they are dishing up the FA like the tt schools.

school process is so competitive, don't be surprised if you are hoping to get in by the end. i think how much you should fight dh over it depends on the academic spread between it and where she would otherwise go. for ex, if you are comparing trevor day and chapin, it is worth your fighting. if it is a comparision of fieldsont and hewitt, it is not

Have you looked into the International Baccalaureate program? Dwight offers it from primary through high school. My child's experience (in another city, high school) is that it's challenging and in depth. FWIW There can be a party scene at any high school in NYC.

Actually, I was going to write that it is intriguing that dh has fond memories. As a native NYer, the two kids I knew who went to Dwight would rather send their kids to Sing Sing; they would be apoplectic if that were the only place their kids got in. Unlike schools like Nightgale and Riverdale, which are fighting to climb the tier ladder, shoring up the curriculum, trying to take a page from NYU's playbook by becoming more selective, Dwight has always been a school of last resort. It's not a great place to be, but someone has to do it.

These are kids who have been spoon-fed, handheld, tutored and sculpted for their entire education. And even then, the VAST majority of them are at schools that are easy to get into if you're coming from a bleh suburban public. I graduated from Oradell High in Bergen County and we had more kids -- even scaled for the size of the class -- going to top schools than this. God knows with all those resources, I HOPE there's a trickle of kids going to the ivy league! But the average boats are NOT being raised (unless you figure they would be going to worse schools if they didn't have all that hand-holding)

That's probably because the parents who go through the bother of researching the process and having their kids take the test and apply, are the ones who are more likely to complain. Parents who end up sending their kids to zoned schools are more likely to just go with the flow.

Why do you think you deserve a spot in your zoned school- similar question. Or a spot in a selective middle school. Or a selective high school... The answer is that they are there, there are rules for entry, and its reasonable that people feel they deserve to play by those rules and enter if granted admission. Nothing more complicated than that.

pp. I don't think I deserve a spot. I simply think that the DOE is disinterested in working for the best interests of the NYC population and they have no motivation to change anything. So it comes down to lawsuits. I believe that the whole G&T program in it's current form is not necessary for elementary. It's a huge waste of resources and demotivates parents to work on improving their zoned schools.

We "ended up" sending dc to our zoned school after dc qualified for a citywide. And there are plenty of engaged, involved parents there who keep abreast of what's going on with the DOE, research all the options for ms, etc. Don't assume gen ed parents are clueless.

These people who filed the lawsuit think a supposed "perfect score" on the exam entitles them to a seat at BSI. There are hundreds of kids who are in this boat. Whether a 4 year old got one question wrong or two on the test should not be the deciding factor. What is this, China? It would be really easy to open a couple new schools. If only people could band together to demand more seats.

I agree that its all unfair. I also believe that if G&T went away completely parents would be mobilized to change the whole system. Because so man of the vocal (aka educated/money) parents have the G&T option they're not forced to try and really change local bad or mediocer gen eds.

I don't actually agree that there are many kids that 'need' G&T and I strongly believe that the process to hand out G&T spots doesn't really work. I do believe that if the G&T program were gone parents would focus on zoned schools. We live in D2 and in my immedaite area there are at least 4 gen ed schools that are mediocer to bad and so many parents zoned for them send their kids to other options and the parents left don't have the ability, wherewithall to fight to make the gen ed schools better. FWIW, I fall into this category-we send our kdis to a fab choice school over the 'meh' zoned school. If this option hadn't existed the zoned schools would no longer be 'meh'

Agreed--I was in exactly this same boat and did not choose our zoned school. But the DOE still makes guinea pics of all the kids periodically (ie: new state testing this year, new G&T testing, etc) and at some point I believe they're going to just have to bite the bullet, piss off half the city and kill G&T. If we were all being fair/honest we'd probably agree that the $$ spend on g&T should be going to the kids in the lowest 10%, not top, but of course we all want what's best for our own kids and so we fight for it. Can't really fault that!

The testing costs less than 2 million dollars per year. Most kids at citywides don't get bus service; district kids get it for 2 years. These costs are less than a drop in the bucket of a $20 billion operating budget.

Two million dollars would operate a run-of-the-mill city gen ed for about a couple of months, not counting fringe benefits and facilities costs. It's a pittance. Whatever extra is spent on busing is offset by large G&T class sizes and low rates of kids requiring special ed or language services.

So attention and public outcry over G&T programs are compromising the ability of the DOE to serve its most at-risk students? You can't be serious. And trust me, if an at-risk kid and a bright kid are in a face-off for a teacher's time and attention in a gen-ed classroom, the at-risk kid will win each and every time.

You think people at DOE aren't spending time and energy implementing G&T programs for mc advantaged white families whose dcs could succeed at a gen ed? Or these schools just magically appear and sustain themselves on fairy dust? What rankles is that these families think they deserve special consideration. When many dcs at failing schools get nothing.

write some draft essays over the summer. "tell us about your kid" and "what are you looking for in a school". then tailor them to the specific schools once the questions come out. get trinity in the first day. write notes AFTER each open house or session with your feelings and observations. in the end, they will all run together so these notes are super valuable.

apply broadly; play dates are most important. don't schedule 2 play dates in one day. make sure your dc is well rested, fed, and happy on play date. prep for ERB; don't listen to people who say they didn't prep. Your kid must get at least 95+ to be in the game. I still think play date is most important. but if he/she doesn't meet ERB cut off, he's out of the game. GL!

i agree with this. i just dont want people to get caught up on a 97 vs a 98. that matters in public. less so in privates. teh schools are smart enough to understand that these are tests on 4yo's and there is some degree of error embedded in them. mostly, they just want to see a consistent score/school record/interview.

agree with most but not on ERB/score. don't need to prep (unless you know your DC really needs to just pass 80, rare IMO) and don't need 95+ to be in the game. plenty of low 90s and hight 80s kids at all top schoools.

agreed, DC low 90s and got into FC and 3 others. A great score is great, but schools can def tell if a kid was prepped. Better go in with a true score.

Apply as broadly as you can. Include ss, co-ed, manhattan, bklyn, bronx...

Apply boradly. Keep an open mind. If possible, keep out of UB and try to form your own opinion. Read the curricula carefully and compare them if academics are a big focus. Prep for the paretn interview. Don't prep for the ERBs.

Tour every school you are even slightly interested in. Go in with an open mind and forget anything you have read on here about any of the schools. I loved the school my DC is at the moment they started talking about the school when I went on tour. Everything they said during tour has ended up being true for my DC. Schools I thought I would love for DC I ended up not liking after touring. GL!

You are really lucky. Our DC wound up in a private and, we drank the Koolade and it was bad! In other words, the school is far from what was presented to us by their admissions staff and our psd. And, once this was clear, we realized that all of the posts that we had read were actually true. So, I would reccomend reading as many posts as possible and, speaking with families in the community with kids in various schools.

Run your own race. Don't listen to other moms or psd. Psd has her own interests and they often will nit coincide with the interests of most families. Fight fir the school you want foryour dc.

for K, i am told that they can see the list of where the ERB's are sent. this is from someone who worked in admissions, but a while ago. i do not know if that is STILL true.

np I really doubt that. They pull the score reports once app fees are paid. Why on earth would a list of other schools to which report might be sent (again, that app fee has to be paid before schools bother pulling erb) be included? Would be a total violation of privacy.

i'm telling you what she told me. she was at a ss school and often checked this info, particularly for sibling parents, to see whether the story they gave about ss vs coed was legitimate. this was a while ago, so the erb's may have changed their policy. but she told me when i applied for my kids so i knew what the schools could see.

If you live uptown, choose ESMS. If you live downtown, choose Lab. No reason to commute for either if you don't have to.

I would personally go for Lab largely due to the HS aspect, but they're VERY far apart geographically. If you live on the UES that would be a tough commute.

Having a high school is an advantage, but it's not automatic: Lab MS kids have to apply to the HS just like everybody else. And many choose to take the SHSAT and go specialized.

Well, the HS is highly regarded, but DD didn't like the whole collaborative aspect for HS, so she put it further down on her list.

not as highly regarded as schools like stuy or bronx science, nor even as highly regarded as beacon, elro, etc.

Well, of course it's not a specialized HS, and probably not as highly regarded as beacon, elro etc., but I think we agree that a kid could do a lot worse.

Agreed--but its still easier to stay then get in fresh and so its just an extra option. All things being equal in terms of geography, I'd still choose lab over ESMS, but, in all fairness, I HATE the UES and probably have a slight predjudice about my kids being surrounded by all those UES families!

Do you mean because there is a Lab HS also, or that around 65% of the kids from Lab go to specialized HS?

That there is a HS. I would imagine ESMS has a similar ratio although I don't know.

Live on UES and would choose Lab in a heartbeat--visit both next year. You'll probably be more inclined to one than the other.

People do get in in appeal. Many ppl already accepted at private, etc turn down spots. These rankings were due in December. I know at least 2-3 people who are turning down heir spots for private
