I would try and get your current 5th grade class to start a list. You really only care about your own school. Some mom's in my school started this a few years ago and each year a 5th grade parents completes it as much as possible and then hands on to a 4th grade family.

Too much revealing info. That being said, test scores get you in the game but aren't the be all and end all. Lateness, attendance, punctuality, report card , teaher comments as well as how they fill out recommnedation form (numbers 1-5 in terms of academic ability, behavior, etc)and the schools own assessment (at least in district 2 the majority of schools have them) are important.

np. ITA. If you drop the elementary school they are coming from, you might get a response. Too much identifying info otherwise. I also don't get the obsession with test scores. They are just part of the process. They are used more to determine cut offs to weed out candidates and they change from year to year. I have a child in middle school, and I would not answer this question the way you put it if I had a 5th grader.

Aristotle circle workbook, go on the erb website and look at the practice questions, brain quest, buy blocks with geometric designs make something and ask dc to copy. Buy workbooks that have sequencing, mazes, connect the dots, what doesn't belong, compete the picture, ask dc to draw a pic of themselves and make sure they draw details like eyebrows. Read them a story and ask them to comment, practice rhyming. All these activities will help for the erbs and playdates.

The education at the "non-TT" (a term which I loathe) is just as good as at the schools you mention. It is also about the entire experience. Believe me, no one (except on this board) sits around judging you if you want to Taft vs. Hotchkiss. Apply to a variety.

I have thought about this too. Unless dc had academic issues (and I see no reason in your post to believe this), I would think hard about moving from a more academic to a less academic environment (regardless of whether boarding or otherwise). On your list were basicallt TT NYC and boarding schools. You also said you were applying to "other coeds in the city" as back-ups. Therefore, I would think you'd also apply to a couple of boarding schools as back-ups. I suspect it's your slight adversity to boarding school that is making you not want to do that. Frankly, your dd is applying to over a dozen schools. If she and dh want to add a couple of boarding school back ups, that does make sense. With that said, I'm with you, I'd send dd to Exeter without hesitation, but I'm not sure that non-TT boarding school is the route I'd want for dc.

I feel the same way about NYC privates. Dd is in prek and honestly I will only send to private if she gets into one of the higher tier schools. No way am I spending 40k a year for a mediocre private. Dh went through NYC public school system and he is extremely successful so we have no issues with public options. I wonder how psd's feel when they hear this?

I think you are correct to want only a top boarding school. However, your list omits Lawrenceville and Hotchkiss and maybe even St. Andrews. These schools and some of those you list as not TT are far superior in academics and college placement than BWL. Also, no way are Trinity and Dalton back ups for anyone except maybe Obama's kids.

I didn't mean that Trinity and Dalton were our backups, I meant that we would apply to them, but also some easier to get into coeds as backups (BWL, Trevor, ect.)

Makes sense. We are looking at this now from a SS with very high standards and I am surprised how excellent the academics are at boarding schools below Exeter and Andover. There really are some great places. Be a bit open minded about what is a top boarding school, especially compared to BWL, Trevor.

Dalton is a real long shot. They take a relatively small number in 9th grade compared to other coeds, and the ones I've heard of from girls' ss schools generally have siblings (boys) already at Dalton.

DD is not very interested in coeds in the city, DH and I want her to apply though. We're not really expecting to get in, but thought we'd apply, because it might be a good option if she did get in. She's pretty much in love with Exeter and Deerfield right now though, so praying that she gets into at least one of them.

to me, bs is only worth the money if it offers an amazing education. that said, if the money is negligible to you, your dh is right that kids can get a lot from the boarding experience in and of itself. Think summer camp - beautiful, rural setting, friendships formed over late night heart-to-hearts in the dorm, a safe place to be increasingly independent. My parents would only allow me to apply to bs's that were better than my day school, and it worked out, but I think a lot of what I loved about my school would have been true at less prestigious ones as well.

I have a child who is working very hard at a boarding school not on your list. Very smart kids are challenged at the school. I don't think you and some of the above posters understand education. Teachers work hard to help kids improve (especially in the small classrooms of most boarding schools). It's fine if you don't want to apply to some schools, but don't do it on the assumption that these schools will not challenge your child.

I didn't attend boarding school and DC is in public so I have no horse in this race, but I do have a question. How do you determine a "TT boarding school"? Do they release the mean SAT scores of their graduates? Or is it more gossip and reputation?

They release average SSAT, average SAT's and college placement lists. They also post detailed course offerings so you can see how advanced the classes are in various fields.

As of now, DD loves Exeter and Deerfield. She's made straight As since fifth grade and plays soccer and lacrosse. We know how competitive it is, but I'm praying that she gets into at least one of the boarding schools that she wants to go to, especially Deerfield or Exeter since she, DH, and I all seem to be in such agreement on them.

I went to a TT boarding school and over the years have many friends who went to a variety of other boarding schools. IMO, while there are boarding schools that really cater to kids who are less academically inclined, not sure the ones you mention fall into this category. I know a brilliant woman who went to Taft for example and my top 15 college had many grads from Milton, Kent, Hotchkiss. I don't feel that those schools or say Lawrenceville or even Loomis would be on par with BWL in the city, which definitely caters to students who need a less academically competitive environment.

NP - On UB, many people have a lot of hate regarding private schools, believing that certain schools at the lower end are not worth the money. Whether or not this is based in fact, is there a similar informal "tier system", for lack of a better word, in boarding schools?

only fallout from the lawsuit will be that the city is forced to add more citywide seats, the WSJ asked a DOE rep why they hadn't already, the DOE responded that they would love to but there just isn't enough room - cue to 24 new non-DOE charters opened up this year alone - nothing against charters - but this no room non-sense for a school that could be ostensibly offered anywhere in city limits is a ruse.

they could throw a school or two at G&T without much issue, the priority seems to have gone well beyond providing alternatives to parents with bad schools (which G&T does as well) to union busting, why else would charters be placed on the UWS, Cobble Hill, Union Square and at the same time turn away hundreds of families looking for accelerated education for their children?

Anderson tried to expand a few years ago because there was plenty of room in the building. But 2 neighboring schools, 87 and 199, took that space (which had been promised to Anderson as part of the DOE's inducement to get Anderson to leave the PS 9 bldg) for their overflow and created PS 452 .... which admits plenty of non-zoned kids every year.

This is completely unfeasible, logistically and otherwise. It is also like making special ed students who attend special schools paid for by the DOE "re-test" every year to prove that they're still dyslexic, autistic or otherwise learning disabled. Where would the annual g&t "rejects" be sent when most zoned schools are already oversubscribed? Would they get guaranteed placement elsewhere? This is just a dumb suggestion.

Have a kid at citywide. From what I can see, the school is monitoring academic progress of every student starting in K and will be forthright with parents when they think a child would be better suited elsewhere. It seems these types of transitions happen during the K year or around 4th-5th grade.

Good public schools are better than bad private schools, and the converse is also true.

Aside from the top 10 private schools in NYC, the others are basically a waste of $40K.

According to some posts and blogs the principal gave some teachers unsatisfactory ratings which in some way resulted in the teachers refusing to come to curriculum night without compensation. Teacher ratings of the principal in the NYC surveys is not good.

I don't think my ds even knows about the issues between the principal and teachers. I think the homework in 6th is the worst, but mostly because of the Algebra, and hopefully they can get rid of one poor teacher in 6th grade. I think it is a myth that NEST has more homework than other selective middle schools. I found that there is very little busy work, the homework makes sense to me even if it is reading a social studies chapter and answering questions at the end. Some dcs do homework very efficiently and some daydream and dawdle and NEST is no different. There are some group projects - I can't compare with other schools, but one thing I love is that most of the group projects are completed by the kids during school, so I don't always know when dc has one. That is the way all group projects should be, IMO, because guarantees no adult is doing it and all kids in group have to share work.

Thanks. Do you think there is more than 90 minutes of hw/night on average? I'm concerned about balancing a commitment to competitive sports outside of school.

Is this post from someone with a child at nest? I'm really trying to sort out the myths generated by people that don't have kids there.

I think my kid has 1hr-2hrs at night (I'm another NEST mom, not OP), and while she doesn't do competitive sport outside school (she runs track), I think it's doable (if he doesn't have travel time in there). But really, all the good schools have a lot of homework

+1. Yes, they are trying to get rid of the sixth grade math teacher who is a nightmare and sort of freaked the kids out (but the 7th grade teacher is fabulous). I think the work is pretty hard, definitely 2 grades ahead of the regular curriculum by this point, especially the math, but homework-wise, my friends with kids at Lab say it's just as heavy there.

A friend really regrets choosing nest vs lab. Insane amount of heomework is destroying her child' s interset in learning. In sixth grade regularly received 3 hrs of homework, which is much more than other schools.

I think it really declines in 7th grade. 6th grade homework seems to be lots of math and it takes too long. In 7th grade, there is math almost every day, but it is 1/2 hour for most days.

Really? I am a Lab parent too, and they hardly get any homework. They also get time to do it during class if they've finished other work. Some days, dc has none, but usually, there is about 30-45 min. Less than elementary.

The teachers still care about the students even though the principal is a an asshole. It's not a perfect school, but I would let my kids go there if it were the best option.

The question, in my case, is what makes it the 'best' option. Our district option is highly regarded but appears to have a very different approach. I am concerned that my dc is challenged academically but also want to see him in a positive social environment and in a place where he wants to learn.

Is there a significant difference in DC's commute? Also, is one location more or less convenient for DC's sport? Do the dismissal times differ, and if so, would this impact DC's sports schedule? We just went through the MS process, just district, and these were some of the questions we asked ourselves.

He would have a longer commute in general from NEST, which is why the homework load matters. Sports are in the evenings and weekends, which is why I am concerned about group projects outside of school.
What time does nest let out in the afternoon?

I posted above. One thing about NEST is that they have very high expectations for all students and the work moves very fast. I can't speak for all the grades and students, but it seems like a particularly nice group of kids who accept all the quirks that often come with being very smart. They are funny and even a bit rebellious, and many of them are also talented in music and art. Btw, I think NEST has one of the best middle school music programs because every single kid is required to learn an instrument and most of them have never played before. Yet they sound very good just a few months in.

So funny. NEST ms is (arguably) the best part of the school. At least, it was when more than half the kids came in from mostly gen eds all over the city. Don't know what will happen when most of the dcs are the ones who started there in K

NEST mom here. I wonder too what will happen, though I think the kids in my dd's 4th grade class are pretty fantastic and interesting. I always laugh when I hear NEST described as a nightmare. It's intense and irritating sometimes, but I'm just happy that my kid can't phone it in, as she would, temperamentally, at our local gen ed. She's very sure of herself and NEST makes her realize she's got to really focus

Have you asked your guidance counselor if anyone from your school has gone to NEST in the recent past? When we were wrestling with our rankings, our guidance counselor put me in touch with an "alum" family whose DC attended the MS that we were considering (which wasn't a popular choice from our school). It was very helpful to talk with this family.

I have a current 6th grader. The workload can be pretty intense, especially in science and math. The math moves very quickly and some kids have a difficult time keeping up. There is not much hand holding for these kids -- they need to work extra hard to catch up and this can be stressful. Science is also very challenging -- many lab reports and science fair type projects during the course of the year. Nest is a great school for an intellectually curious academic type of kid. English teacher is very good too. My DC loves it but has also spent a lot of weekends working on school projects. I have been impressed with the projects assigned, which call for a lot of creativity and advanced problem solving skills. Kids are great -- some pretty nerdy, some quirky but very engaged. Principal is a cold fish, but with the exception of the cancelled curriculum night, the school seems well-run. Agree that the music program is top notch. I hear that in 7th grade the workload is much more manageable. Excellent sports teams and lots of afterschool programs.

Have kid at NEST ms; agree with everything above. 6th grade workload seemed the hardest--most projects, and math teacher really piled it on, tho he may not be there next year. (but then, people have been saying that for 3 years.) homework/projects seem to decrease in 7th/8th. My dc has never seemed overwhelmed by hw. best part of NEST is the peer group--it's a great group of kids--really no bullying, drug issues, etc. Many of the teachers are excellent; some are duds like any other school. arts program is excellent.
I would say choose NEST if your dc is good at math, because the math is the hardest/most advanced. If math is dc's weakest subject, go with the district option. We agonized over our decision too, but IMHO, choosing NEST was a great choice. DC has been v happy there.

no. my dc came in at 6th and it was fine. there doesn't seem to be much difference btw those who have been there and those who came in for 6th grade math. mainly due to the teacher, they all struggle. however, if it's a different teacher next year, then things will be easier, i expect.

Another 8th grade mom: I also agree. With the exception of 6th grade math, homework has been reasonable, and the best part is watching DC gradually assuming complete responsibility for it. Love the fact there is music, art, language and recess all three years. Peer group is smart, interesting, and possibly more diverse (economically, culturally) than any other school I've encountered. Teachers are mostly fabulous. I actually am a big fan of the principal: I think she has a real vision for gifted education, though I would admit that she is not a terrific communicator, hence above mentioned problems. But I have seen her be extraordinarily kind to kids, and if you get her attention, she will listen. One caveat: in spite of the wonderful experience we've had, I'd think hard if your commute is a long one and you have a good option close to home.

I'm not a NEST parent, but I have a friend who is. My child is at Lab. We were talking about this recently, and he said the homework load in 6th is a bit ridiculous. It has disturbed him, but his daughter seems okay with it. Sometimes it takes her 3 hours, but usually 2 including reading. My child hardly spends any time on homework and is doing well at the school. I have been surprised at how little there is, though I'm sure it will increase next year. What is your district option? Friends with kids at Baruch SP, Salk and 276 say their 6th grader usually gets about 1.5 hours of homework, though it varies. My NEST friend also says he hates the principal, but it doesn't have any bearing on his child. She is quite happy.
