isn't that counter-productive? i mean looking at her has got to kill the appetite. oh, but that's conducive to whittling away excess weight. i get it now.

Laura Bush was always praised about her work with literacy many times. Why dont you just be an adult and say you're racist and will complain about anything they do. His color is too much for you and you cannot get past it...regardless what good he does or his wife.

Seasons 3 and 4 were the best IMO. The first two seasons concentrated too much on Tony's relationship with his mother. The (excellent) actress playing his mother passed away, so that character died on the show, and it got much better. The last season and a half were mediocre. Gandolfini really was magnificent in the role, and so was his counterpart Edie Falco, who played his wife. Their scenes together were like master acting classes sometimes.

Suggestion: Skip the very beginning of The Sopranos on DVD and go straight to the Season 1 episode called "College". It was about halfway through the season, but it's pretty easy to follow the plot. If that doesn't hook you, then you definitely won't like the show.

No. Contrary to liberal fairy tales, black people don't like you. I know too many whites who have sent their kids to schools with a high minority population only to have to pull them out and put them elsewhere. Other cultures don't like to mix like we do. Not racist, just the way it is. Try sending your kid and let me know how it works out.

I think that's considered part of it - learning to get over their natural feelings of jealousy and rivalry supposedly helps them become better, less selfish women, just as rising to the demands of treating all the wives fairly and managing multiple marriages and families is supposed to make the men better. the women say kids know parents love all their children equally; if monogamy is not the norm in your culture, sharing a husband isn't much different than siblings sharing a mom.

it is totally different. jealousy is a major problem and not always so easily glossed over. it's a woman's nature to not want to share her husband's resources/time.

How would you ensure that there was no driving. We live in NYC, it wasn't a shopping complex. 10 minutes is a long time, what does the mother do after 15 minutes, 20 minutes. Does she call the police and tell them she let her child leave with a complete stranger! You'd be flaming her on here if she did that.

wtf? you guys are nuts. if there is an ice cream shop five doors down, i would say, "if it's to xyz, that's fine." then i'd tell dc and the man, "you're just going to the ice cream store and back. i don't want you guys driving off anywhere so just come back if the store is shut." then if he's not back in 15, i go to the ice cream shop. i guess there's a chance he'd do something weird in the 10 minutes but i know his girlfriend, the girlfriend knows the man's name, address, birth date, etc. he'd have to be crazy to do something. maybe he is crazy. but if he's crazy, he might also get night vission goggles and stalk my house and break in in the middle of the night and kill everybody except my two kids and take them on some crazy cross-country journey. you guys keep being crazy, i'll let my kid enjoy some ice cream and show him that there are kind strangers in the world. maybe he'd grow up some day and do the same for some kid.

a child molester doesn't molest a kid he just met in the first ten minutes when he has no idea what the kid might do in reaction and whose mother has access to his personal info. a child molester gets to know a kid pretty well before he tries something like this. this is not a 30 minute outing with a random stranger who happens to walk into the shop. it is a hairdresser's boyfriend. take a chill pill.

true, my boomer friends are still obsessed, mostly imho cause everything they have is tied to their homes. but i don't see the same with the young at all. maybe because they observed the crash?

Boomers are counting on their homes to fund their retirements. The young prefer investing instead, it's wiser imho. A house makes you less mobile, has huge transaction costs and property taxes will have to pay for the unfunded public pensions. Why do it?

only 55% rent in the main metros. the housing obsession has more to do with suburbia, which isn't cool for the young anymore.

the richest households, Switzerland, only 33% homeownership rate but they have great portfolios of investments. those guys have always been really savvy financially wise. imho that's the new ideal in USA thanks to having to fund your own retirement and college costs.

I own my home, but it's not a financial decision. It's more about stability and feeling safe. I don't know if I could make more money if I rented and put what I saved in the market.

Shiller and the Swiss say YES to that, but obviously it depends on whether you are a good investor or not. imho buying is best for those who otherwise wouldn't save or aren't into investing, it's a way of forced-saving (but not optimal, just easier)

I think it depends on what you want to do, but for med school, I would say the former

I agree for med school/law school/etc, but I'd say for everything else the latter, as long as we are talking HYPSM.

I knew people who just left their bad GPAs off their resume and still got great jobs because they were MIT computer science majors.

^^To be fair, these were engineers who had actual, verifiable skills, but performed very badly in their classes.

You mean good med school subpar GPA? Because I don't think a subpar GPA is getting you into med school regardless of where it's from.

No, I mean if you're not planning to go to med school or law school, it's better to have a lower GPA at a better UG school than the other way around.

Oh sure, as long as whatever degree you're getting is terminal, then grades don't matter. Unless of course you change your mind, then you're fucked.

this. the hardest part is getting in. interviewed a professor/author once and he said there are very few top schools w/o grade inflation anymore - the two exceptions he noted were Swarthmore and U of Chicago. anyway, simply not true that GPA will automatically be lower at less prestigious school.

So a state school isn't necessarily the be-all-end-all of one's opportunities? My DD is a sophomore at a state school (her choice), but she has a 4.0 GPA.

Depends what she wants to do. Some firms only recruit at certain top schools.

I think she has a better shot at med/law school than say a Columbia grad with a low B/C average.

I think state schools are unique because not everyone can afford a 4 year college. Lots of smart people go to state schools just for $$$ reasons. A 4.0 at a state school would look far better than a 4.0 from a shitty private college.

If you are going to any kind of graduate school or going into finance, the former (need 3.5 gpa or more to make it past the computer)
