For example, he wanted to plan outing with another couple& their kids, when I told him I had already RSVPd to 4 yo bday party that evening he had in mind, he gets furious with me, even though I told him about it weeks ago when first mentioned. Not allowing your spouse to make decisions without flipping out = controlling. Your definition of "real abuse" seems very narrow. A home where one adult constantly acts like this is damaging to the other parent and the DC. [ Reply | More ]

No, your definition of how people should act is really narrow. Some people get angry about stupid things and don't handle their anger well. Send OP to a center for abused women they would laugh at her. Controlling is telling OP that she can't go the party becuase he's already made plans. Maybe I'm hardened because my boss says worse things on a monthly basis. Shockingly HR has not found her behaviour to be abusive. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like a jerk, but I will say that "told him about it weeks ago" is pretty useless. You have to have your calendars online and properly synched up. No one can keep track of a 4 y.o. birthday party in his head and no one should reasonably be expected to. [ Reply | More ]

There are wonderful kids books about Venice: Zoe Sophia's Scrapbook: An Adventure in Venice; The Orphan Singer, among many. The books have ideas. You'll want to go to Piazza San Marco and have a spremuta (fruit juice) (spremuta d'arancia is orange juice); watch glass blowing on Murano, take a gondola (or the less expensive traghetti (boats that cross the Grand Canal in certain places). Italy loves children, but I would try to do restaurants at off times. If you buy a pass, you can hop on the water busses at any time. You might get child a small, inexpensive camera and have her take pictures or draw on a drawing pad while you do some adult things. Teach her to say please and thank you and "una spremuta, per piacere." There's lots of walking. I would try to find less populated areas. It's also a Biennale year. http://italy.worldwide-accom.com/venice/guides/traghetto-routes-in-venice#.UZeDWIJKX4g [ Reply | More ]

Less than 1% of the population has nut allergies. It's a fine policy for preschool or for a classroom with a child who is allergic. It's beyond OTT for an entire school. A school-aged child with an allergy should be able to manage that allergy on their own or have an aide if they have other special needs and can't safely be out in the real world without close adult supervision. I doubt that's the problem. Guys typically don't care if another guy is quieter. It's probably just a matter of people getting older and having kids and not wanting or being able to go out every Sat night. [ Reply | More ]

I wish that were true but everyone around here goes out every sat nite - it's just what you do, and well, we don't... [ Reply | More ]

My husband doesn't like to socialize at all. I have started going out by myself and I find that I enjoy it. It beats nagging. [ Reply | More ]

I have a large circle of friends and the DW are the ones who initiate and organized nearly everything. Some of the DH are more social, some less. You will drive yourself crazy with resentment if you don't accept your DH for who he is. You can't change himself anymore than you can. Be social, makes plans, and love him for who he is, a rock solid guy who will go out with you, even if he isn't the life of the party. [ Reply | More ]

Introverts aren't usually the life of the party. This isn't who you married--and you knew it. You can't (shouldn't) try to change him. Find other outlets for your social needs. Part of making a long-term marriage work is the realization that your spouse will not meet 100% of your needs and finding ways to explore those areas within the context of your marriage. For instance, if you love to travel and your dh doesn't, that doesn't mean you have to give up on your dream of seeing the world. Maybe you go with other friends or with tour groups or whatever. Apply the same logic here. You're setting him to fail if you expect him to go out and whoop it up. It's not who he is. [ Reply | More ]

I had a friend who cheated all through school. I was so annoyed because she consistently received better grades than I did. She grew up to be the biggest loser. Sorry but in the long run honestly does pay off. [ Reply | More ]

I was my advisor's research assistant. I found my own final departmental exam questions on a cd in his office, so I had them in advance. A+. [ Reply | More ]
