I'll tell you that people kept telling me a changing table or dresser was not necessary, but I found it completely necessary. No, I think that's cute. And being of greek descent, i can tell you that in that culture, since all kids are named after grandparents, cousins often have the same names. we actually considered something similar - were going to name a girl (if we had a girl) after a female relative and then use initals as nn. we ended up having a boy and used a different name w same initials and used same nn. I had a pre-existing back problem with herniations in my lower back. AT 12-13 weeks, my back started to get bad (evidently from the increase in relaxin hormone) and I upped my attendance prenatal pilates and yoga classes. Bad move. The morning after one class I couldn't stand without a cane and back brace. My suggestions are get yourself a pregnancy back brace ASAP. Take it easy on the pilates and yoga, and instead go to see a physical therapist and chiropractor who specialize in prenatal care. I ended up having to be bed-rested for the best part of 10 days, and doing chiropratic 3x/week and PT 2x/week. by 18 weeks I was pretty must back to the way I was before--no cane, and no brace. I am only a small sample - but FWIW I liked babycenter with my first baby for the updates on development each week, and comparing development notes online with people due around your time is great (if you are well off though, I would leave that out... def attracts LMC/WC crowd). However, I made a mistake in meeting up with someone from my birth club (month/year you're due) IRL to try to make friends. It was odd,was a little sad we didn't meet again - but then I read later that she flunked the postpartum psych exam done in NJ. Thought I dodged a bullet. Takeaway is it's like internet dating... never know what you'll get IRL. All that being said - start taking classes ASAP on how to care for baby at the hospital where you'll deliver; ask the pediatrician you'll choose; take prenatal yoga or whatever. Everyone is in your boat the first time around, so most people will be friendly because they want to make that new mom connection, too. GL! [ Reply | More

I didn't have a doula so this is just a random musing ... I'd try to figure out how she and DH are going to share roles (or have separate roles?) during the birth. My DH is very hands on, so she would have more of a supporting role to him - but if your DH wants to be less involved, then she would be more active. np: I found passing the placenta the worst part of labor. It's slimy and squishy and blobby and just disgusting. I had no problem with my dh seeing all of labor and me at my finest animal moment, but the fact that he saw my placenta makes me weirdly upset. It's just so utterly disgusting. Isn't the whole point of hiring a doula is for her to be with you as a birth coach? I'm a few weeks ahead of you, and my DH wants to be there and involved, but honestly neither of us has seen anyone give birth before. We have no idea what to do! Yes, yes, do what is natural, but experienced doulas have been to hundreds of births and are trained in tricks to assist a woman in labor, such as positions to rotate into, etc. We also wanted her to basically translate what the medical staff is saying, and give us advice, in her opinion, as to whether the doctors and nurses are doing something that is to help them only or to help me (i.e. lay flat, take pitocin, have epidural, etc.). I wouldn't send a doula out of the room to deal with my family. That is not her role. [ Reply | More

Who are you using? You didn't talk to her about this stuff when you interviewed her before hiring? Most doulas are also lactation consultants and the post-partum visits are to check on you and the baby, to see if you need any help breastfeeding or with the latch or have any questions about the baby and breastfeeding(I'm sure I will). One post-partum visit will be right after you get home from the hospital, and the second will be about a week later. The two pre-natal visits are prep work for the delivery, where she is going to discuss with you options and what goes on from her point of view, suggest positions for labor and delivery, talk about laboring at your home (mine wants me to labor at home with her for at least 4 to 5 hours before the three of us go to the hospital together (me, DH, her), talk about your birth plan, your willingess or ability to take a variety of pain meds, explain her role, etc. Your pre-natal visits probably won't start until 30-32 weeks for the first and the second at 36 weeks or so. You are overthinking this--you don't need to "make work" for her. She's paid for a very specific, short-time period task. [ Reply | More

Have your doula offer advice to DH on how to be an effective coach. You (and he) will want the support that he can give if he is confident. Little things go a long way: do not offer a pregnant women a choice ("Do you want some water?") - give them the water straw. Women in labor can't make decisions from a rational place and when they are asked to decide something like do I want some water? it is sometimes a hard choice. So the coach shoves the straw in their face and if no water is needed a simple head shake is an answer. DH and the doula should decide who will be playing gatekeeper and keeping the right amount of visitors that you are comfortable with in or out. [ Reply | More

Drs may shy away from you if you come on this strong when you interview them. You should cultivate a more grateful tone for your consult if you'd like them to take you on. np- we were big fans, but I understand your point. we are now in suburbs, but our city life was primarily focused on walking distance to our apartment, so we appreciated that peg had extra plush lining, etc, which our son seemed to like (somewhat particular even then). but folding it and getting it in and out of cabs or buses was a bit tricky for me (I am petite and admittedly weak), although my dh had literally no problem with it. We used pouch & then ergo for public transport, bug for walks. Intended to get umbrella but db was small and didnt need it. You can't put a newborn in an umbrella anyway, so, even if you're sure you won't use a carrier, there's no rush to buy one. You'll have an idea whether you'll want super light or one that's got more going on--like a basket--after db arrives. Plus, there's always new gear. [ Reply | More

You just need 1 to start. You don't need a snap n go. Just get a nice stroller (citi mini, bugaboo, etc), but make sure it has car seat attachment. Then much later (10 months), you'll need an umbrella stroller. [ Reply | More

You only need one. Don't get a newborn one - it's MUCH easier to carry a little baby than push him in a stroller. Just get one foldable stroller for when the DB is big enough to sit up. I like the Maclaren techno because you can recline it (so the DB can take naps in it while you're out). [ Reply | More
