Different??? I love it, but in the south it is EVERYWHERE. Between Brandons and Brendans there's hardly room for a Zachary.

I just three at Marshall's. They're nice-ish quality too, but not terribly trendy. Two were Max Studio and the other CK. All under $40/ea. I'm pregnant and working too, so I believe we must be shopping for the exact same thing. :-)

So long as you have good, trusted childcare the change is still profound but in a different way than you are expecting. I find that career is a bigger threat to balance than DC. They are in bed so early and sleep so much you still live your life--romantic dinners, concerts. At least while they are small

Or--that has been hard. We used to travel far, and well. We now only do shorter flights to on the beaten path locales in the Caribbean Mexico etc. we find it to be tiring and have a hard time trusting hotel staff to watch dd at such a young age. But I have friends who travel a lot with dcs--Europe, Hawaii from the east coast. I can do concerts and diners but long trips with a 2-year-old just aren't worth it. We will ramp back up later. We go on tons of local trips to see friends and family within a six hour drive lots of trips to Florida as well

WTF are you talking about? did a nanny raise your kids? did you forget about kids getting sick and getting up 10 times to hold the trash can while they vomit in it? changing diapers and going out the door and realizing hte new diaper has already leaked through? Running around in the park all day and coming home exhausted and kids asking what are we doing now?

Or--why so dramatic? Yes dcs get sick but not every single time you have plans. Have had to cancel one trip for DC illness and a couple of nights out. Nothing to chain me to her so that I can't ever have a break. The change is big--yes you will spend mornings at the playground--but it's not like you'll never see a movie or dine out again. By nanny raising if you mean after she is asleep so be it

I felt the same way when I was preg. The plan was that my mom would take care of ds and I would carry on with my career etc. THEN ds was born and something magical happened! I can not even explain the love I suddenly had for this little guy. I didn't even let my mom hold him!! Lol! To this day, I know ds is th best thing that ever happened to me! He s 6 yo now. Hang in there. When you see the baby and hold it your priorities will suddenly change. You will feel emotions ou have never felt before! Career is far less important to me now. DS is a blessing, I absolutely love spending time with him in the park even on his cranky days! GL,

np: ita. she was my OB for dc born in 2008 and that's exactly how i'd describer her: competent and caring and definitely friendly, but not super warm and fuzzy. she's not the OB for the patient who's the type who wants to call 5x a week with 10 questions.

Had a great experience with her in 2011. I moved to westchester and had to commute an hour to the hospital in labor. She 'accidentally' broke my water for me so that I didn't have to leave and go home despite not being quite far enough yet. Also she stuck through with me when labor stalled, didn't force a cssection when I had been there too long. She was leaving for vacation at the end of her shift and stayed on two hours longer than she needed to to help me deliver. Not warm and fuzzy, but happy to answer all questions and very supportive when you need it.

It will NOT look good on a busty woman - it is a gorgeous dress, but with just a bit of curve, it ends up looking like a muumuu (?). If you popped big time, you could get away with it.

OP: These are some great suggestions - thank you! I'm torn between a few of these now and a fairly unpopular (these days) family name. Part of me wants to use it but I want to be 100% certain, you know? It's Fredrick, by the way. My father's name, who is by far the kindest person I have ever met (in fact, I've never met a Fred I didn't get along with). Thoughts? It was also my grandfather's name.

I live on UWS so can't help you but I highly recommend a ped near you. I can not imagine dragging a newborn into the city so much - especially if you do alt vac which requires more visits. I just make sure I am really educated and an advocate for my child. I have a 4 and 2 year old who have never been on antibiotics because I would not take them for a visit unless I really felt it wasn't viral.

Do you mean within walking distance? I live on the 36th Ave stop, and there aren't really very many options AT ALL. We don't have a car, so I wonder if I wouldn't be using the subway or car service regardless. I guess the other big factor is commute time. That being said, does anyone have recommendations for pediatricians in Astoria?

NP: Why would you want to do this? As a scientist, I am baffled. There isn't a speck of evidence that delaying vaccinations benefits children. There is lots of evidence that it puts them, and other children, at greater risk. Why would you want to put your child at greater risk of needlessly contracting a serious infection?

I want to delay vaccines for a month or more. And not give number of vaccines on the same day but spread them apart. There's certainly studies and research on both sides of the argument.

The majority of peds do not hand out antibiotics easily, in fact it is the opposite. I had good friends who changed peds because they wanted meds for every cough and the ped refused. You need to vaccinate your baby, so I'm not going to offer any suggestions on that, but ITA with other posters that you should find someone who is fairly convenient. The first time you have a sick baby with a double ear infection that is vomiting all over you are not going to want to get on the Q.

most mds are VERY stingy with antibiotics these days, so you can rest easy. your very own vaccination schedule, on the other hand, is absurd and most peds will try to convince you not to. in fact now I have to log off UB -- anyone who doesn't believe vaccinations are one of the greatest public health triumphs of all time are infuriating. Thanks for everyone's feedback so far. This is my first time on Urban Baby. A taxi ride to the UES is about 15 minutes and a train into Manhattan is 3 subway stops, so I'm still considering a pediatrician around MidTown/ UES area. If you have more suggestions specific to those areas and also to Astoria, keep them coming. Thanks

Black pants and black pure tank tops from Gap, the stretchy ones, (wait for 30% off sale) and regular non-maternity blazers in anything but black, with long necklaces or bright scarves.

I'll never know how my sister did it with her class of second graders...she used to have to open door and throw up outside so they couldn't see. I was working from home or not working or else would have had to take leave of absence. You may find a really strange thing happened. I could throw up day and night, but could somehow get through major meetings/events when I had to. Following something like that, I'd throw up non-stop for days, but it was really odd. How many weeks are you? You may be lucky and feel better at 12, and much better at 16.

I teach at a university and had morning sickness for a full semester. I always had crackers and ginger ale at the podium. Do a lot of group work and student presentations if possible.

Definitely keep nanny on leave. In that position now, you will want her. People are just asking dumb questions, ignore. Or answer honestly.

So many people opt out after number two. Maybe that's why people assume. Also I think there are all sorts of men who think maternity leave is some sort of vacation. Near from it, even with help.

Actually it's that many of them can't fathom having or needing help with only two DCs.

Agreed. It also lets you sleep when the baby sleeps. That said, I did try to let her go / give her some mornings / evenings off.

How? OP already has a kid she has to take care of, during the newborn stage she will be tied to her baby 24-7, she needs help. My nanny is definitely working full time, I can only handle one kid at a time, my first maternity leave was pure hell.

Making conversation. They don't really care if you keep the nanny or go back to work.

I get asked all the time if I'm hiring additional help besides nanny, #3 any time now. At work I get asked if I'm returning or staying home.

I've heard that delicate balance that permits working with one dc often falls apart with number 2. But this is just hearsay. I have one and have to work, so if I had a second I would still have to work.

Who is asking? I actually think the vast majority of people would be just trying to make conversation and wouldn't mean anything by it. What you did in the past is only vaguely on radar. Same thing if they asked how long mat leave was going to be to woman who was going to SAH. It's not like they would be trying to send a message with that question that SAH would be inappropriate.

i got that question all the time as well. and a few people would say things like "oh, you won't come back... no one comes back after #2." strange. fwiw, i found it much easier to go back with #2 then it was with #1.

it's b/c their wife didnt come back. and that's what the wife told the person who is speaking with you. so they assume that is what all women will do....until they dont.

it's a very loaded question for a lot of men. all along, they've thought, "she's just like my wife". if it turns out their wife decided to stay home, they assume you will. and any comment you make about your choices necessarily is a statement about their wife. just smile and nod and go about your business. actions speak louder than words.
